The economy is in shambles, unemployment is soaring, the auto industry is collapsing. But profits are higher than ever at oil companies Chevron and Shell. Yet across the globe, people are fighting back against the world’s oil giants.

Shell and Chevron are in the spotlight this week, with shareholder meetings and a historic trial.

On May 13, the Nigerian military launched an assault on villages in that nation’s oil-rich Niger Delta. Hundreds of civilians are feared killed by the Nigerian military. According to Amnesty International, a celebration in the Delta village of Oporoza was attacked. An eyewitness told Amnesty International: “I heard the sound of aircraft; I saw two military helicopters, shooting at the houses, at the palace, shooting at us. We had to run for safety into the forest. In the bush, I heard adults crying, so many mothers could not find their children; everybody ran for their life.”

Oronto Douglas, one of Saro-Wiwa’s lawyers, told us: “It is very clear that Chevron, just like Shell, uses the military to protect its oil activities. They drill and they kill.”

Chevron is the second-largest stakeholder of the Yadana natural-gas field and pipeline project, based in Burma (which the military junta renamed Myanmar). The pipeline provides the single largest source of income to the military junta, amounting to close to $1 billion in 2007. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, popularly elected the leader of Burma in 1990, has been under house arrest for 14 of the past 20 years, and was standing trial again this week. The U.S. government has barred U.S. companies from investing in Burma since 1997, but Chevron inherited a waiver when it acquired oil company Unocal.

Chevron’s litany of similar abuses, from the Philippines, to Kazakhstan, Chad-Cameroon, Iraq, Ecuador, Angola, and across the U.S. and Canada, is detailed in an “alternative annual report” prepared by a consortium of nongovernmental organizations.

Chevron is being investigated by New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo about whether the company was “accurate and complete” in describing potential legal liabilities. It enjoys, though, a long tradition of hiring politically powerful people. Condoleezza Rice was a longtime director of the company, and the recently hired general counsel is none other than disgraced Pentagon lawyer William J. Haynes, who advocated for “harsh interrogation techniques,” including waterboarding. Gen. James L. Jones, President Barack Obama’s national security adviser, sat on the Chevron board of directors for most of 2008, until he received his White House appointment.

Saro-Wiwa said before he died, “We are going to demand our rights peacefully, nonviolently, and we shall win.” A global grass-roots movement is growing to do just that.

AT LAST we are seeing real action from the courts to get tough on the ABHORRENT crime of child sexual abuse.

As the Herald Sun reveals today, the Court of Appeal has sent a powerful message on what minimum jail terms should be set to help protect the MOST INNOCENT members of our society.

By increasing the minimum terms to be served by two pedophiles, the Court of Appeal has signalled to other judges the intention of parliament in setting tougher sentences cannot be ignored.

In one of its findings, the court said the longest sentence for a sexual penetration crime against a child under 10 in the past seven years was 6 1/2 years, well short of the maximum penalty of 25 years.

Unfortunately, it has until now been another case of the courts lagging behind community expectations, which demand these cruel offenders be hit with the toughest sanctions possible. They deserve nothing less.

China, Burma, and Sudan: Convincing Argument

I just came across this great OpEd piece describing precisely what I wrote about yesterday with a few additional considerations I didn't think about regarding China's relationship with Burma. China has the same relationship with Sudan (Darfur). Therefore, the same strategy can be applied. China is no doubt the 'key'. Nevertheless, the U.N. Security Council needs to approach China with a financial economic tone and not a human rights tone. Meet China in their understanding, their perspective. China MUST be made to feel secure that they will benefit from a Burmese and Sudanese change in governance. This is the only way China will cooperate and respond. Use this strategy and you will beat the military dictators from both Burma and Sudan at their very own game! These dictators have been FEEDING the beast's insatiable appetite for natural resources which has kept China loyal to them. Now you MUST find a way to ENTICE the beast away from them with an alternative satisfying feast. Preferably the same in order to sustain the Burmese economy but with extra incentives! Help China envision a new Burmese tourist paradise with productive Burmese workers earning a wage. I say help them look upon the Burmese people as potential chinese product consumers!

For the record, the Myanmar (Burma) military regime USURPED it's power over the people. The junta is NOT A LEGITIMATE ruling government! This means that their constitution and thus their LAWS are ILLEGITIMATE and should be recognized as such by the U.N. Security Council and ASEAN! Therefore, Burmese governance should be abdicated to the winner of the ONLY democratic elections held in Burma. Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was elected with an overwhelming 80% of the votes back in 1990. She is the RIGHTFUL chosen leader of the people of Burma! World Leaders NEED TO BE STRONG in AFFIRMING this TRUTH! The junta court does NOT have a RIGHT to try Aung San Suu Kyi nor do they have a RIGHT to keep her imprisoned. China, Burma, and Sudan: Convincing Argument

The country's ruling regime routinely makes Freedom House's list of nastiest governments and Parade magazine's lineup of the world's worst dictators. Its military conducts brutal campaigns against ethnic minorities in one region of the country, campaigns that reportedly have forced over 11,000 people from their homes in just the past three months alone. Ostracized by the world, it refuses to allow in U.N. monitors, who want unfettered access to document the nation's human rights situation. Since the United States has slapped sanctions on the oil-rich state, and American companies have little business there, Washington has limited leverage over this country's government. China, meanwhile, has all kinds of influence. China is the country's biggest investor, major consumer of its resources, and primary arms supplier, and thousands of Chinese laborers have flowed into the country.

Sudan? Try Burma, where the government's abuses, though probably not a genocide as in Darfur, rank among the world's worst. According to one report, "The Burmese military regime is allowing its troops systematically and on a widespread scale to commit rape with impunity in order to terrorize and subjugate the ethnic peoples" in the country's northeast. By slapping sanctions on Burma, the United States has tried to prod the Burmese government towards reform, to little avail. But while China, Burma's major patron, has hardly become an advocate for democracy in Rangoon, there are signs Beijing might cooperate to reduce the Burmese government's worst abuses--signs that could provide lessons for convincing China to act more benevolently in Sudan.

Although pro-democracy opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi won Burma's last free election, held in 1990, the Burmese military simply nullified that poll, and since then it has held Suu Kyi under house arrest for most of the time, while also jailing hundreds of members of her party. Without a doubt, Chinese officials do not care whether Suu Kyi ever comes to power. China remains an authoritarian country, a nasty, Leninist regime if not a Marxist one, a state consistently characterized by Freedom House as unfree, a government showing no signs of liberalization. Its leaders and diplomats reflect that thinking: In years of doing research in Asia, I've never met a Chinese official who expressed concern that Burma has locked Suu Kyi up for so many years.

But pragmatic China does care about several problems caused by horrendous governments, whether in Burma or Sudan or elsewhere. First, China worries about instability. Instability threatens Chinese commerce and disrupts China's worldwide hunt for energy; China takes more than 50 percent of Sudan's oil, and plans to get 6.5 trillion cubic feet of Burmese gas over the next 30 years. Growth and energy are vital to the Beijing government maintaining legitimacy, since it has basically abandoned any ideological appeal to its populace. Any slowdown in China's economic growth makes it more likely that middle-class Chinese, who've essentially kept quiet about Beijing's limits on political freedom as long as they're making money, will start to question the government.

The more China can be convinced that bad governance in places like Burma or Sudan fosters instability that is bad for Chinese investment, the more Beijing will try to rein in its nasty client states. In Burma, the junta has become increasingly unpredictable, moving its headquarters from the capital, Rangoon, to a jungle redoubt--reportedly on the advice of the Burmese leader's astrologer--and sacking a top leader, Khin Nyunt, who was close to China. A string of unexplained recent bombings across Burma has contributed to instability.

If the killing in Sudan continues, and China is perceived as doing nothing to help while taking out vast quantities of Sudanese oil, individuals might wind up directing violence at the thousands of Chinese who've come to Sudan to set up businesses or work in the oil industry. In addition, anger against China would mean that, if conflict ever ended in Sudan and Khartoum actually transitioned to better government, China might be cut out of Sudanese resources by Sudanese officials angry for China's past support for authoritarian rule.

Again, this provides a lever for Western countries to use against Beijing. Ultimately, a Sudan-China policy will require this combination of SHAMING China and trying to frighten the Chinese government--targeting China's growing sensitivity about its global image, worries about instability, and desire to hedge against any possibility of political change in Sudan. With so many lives at stake--more than 400,000 people have already died in Darfur--it's certainly worth a try.

This classic by the great Austrian psychiatrist Viktor Frankl could be described as one of the most important popular books of the 20th century. It has an extraordinary message about the meaning of life and its psychological importance.

The first part of Man's Search for Meaning, a book which now has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide, was originally published in German in 1946. It's Frankl's autobiographical account of his experiences of his three years in Auschwitz, Dachau and other concentrations camps, between 1942 and 1945. This part, along with a brief theoretical section, appeared in English in 1959 as From Death-Camp to Existentialism. The second part of the book is a synopsis of logotherapy, the major system of existential psychotherapy and psychology that Frankl went on to develop. The present edition, the sixth in English, includes a new foreword by the emeritus rabbi Harold S. Kushner, as well as a new biographical afterword by the philosopher, lawyer and psychoanalyst William J. Winslade.

But even with such luck, how did anyone manage to survive? It's here that Frankl's philosophy of life and human beings comes in -- in three stages. Firstly, Frankl often uses a quotation from Nietzsche: 'He who has a why to live can bear with almost any how.' I suggest we call this view (1) 'Nietzsche's thesis of existential endurance'. Having this 'why', a 'why' for one's existence, is having meaning in one's life. Secondly, the drive towards having meaning in one's life, the will to meaning, as he calls it, is the primary motivation in humans. (Correspondingly, the frustration of it, 'existential frustration', is in his view the main cause of neuroses and psychiatric problems.) Evidence for this claim is indicated both by the camp experience and by several empirical studies mentioned in Part II of the book. I suggest we call this view (2) the 'primacy of the will to meaning'.

Thirdly, Frankl maintains that there are three sources of meaning. The first is love. This is exemplified strongly by the experiences in the camp. In Frankl's own case, it's clear that he refers to the relationships with the ones closest to him, and in particular his love for his wife. Frankl mentions other examples of prisoners who, he claims, were able to survive the extreme conditions because of their connection to a loved one.

The second source of meaning is work. This too is exemplified strongly by Frankl's own experience as a prisoner. He had brought the manuscript for his first book on logotherapy, but one of the guards confiscated it. Not only did this give him the chance of a very concrete meaningful activity (e.g. when in a camp in Bavaria he fell ill with typhus, he jotted down on little scraps of paper notes intended to enable him to rewrite the manuscript should he live to the day of liberation). It also gave him a 'why' for his existence.

Accordingly, Frankl summarizes the status of love and work as sources of meaning like this: 'A man who becomes conscious of the responsibility he bears toward a human being who affectionately waits for him, or to an unfinished work, will never be able to throw away his life. He knows the "why" for his existence, and will be able to bear almost any "how".'

It's hardly unusual to claim that love and work are important to meaning. However, it's with the third source of meaning that Frankl becomes remarkable. This source is suffering. (Frankl stresses that he's talking about unavoidable suffering; suffering that is avoidable is simply masochistic.) There are two reasons why suffering can be a source of meaning. Firstly, because our inner freedom -- our 'spiritual freedom', as Frankl occasionally calls it -- to choose the attitude we have to things is absolute, as it were, we can choose which attitude to take to suffering. Secondly, and closely related to this Stoic view, we can choose to see suffering as our 'task'. This 'task' of suffering, the 'task' of bearing one's cross, enables a human being to suffer 'proudly'. Frankl quotes Dostoevski: 'There is only one thing that I dread: not to be worthy of my sufferings.' Further, it enables a human being to make suffering into 'an achievement' -- which 'transforms a personal tragedy into a triumph'.

The significance of this third source of meaning was also exemplified in abundance by the camp prisoners. Of course, they suffered immensely, and they could do nothing to avoid it. But what they could do was to use their 'spiritual freedom' to change their attitude to their suffering so as to make it into a source of meaning. Those who didn't do this (and didn't have either of the two other sources of meaning) would give up and become moribund: remaining in their bunks, lying in their own urine and excreta, disobeying all orders to get up, smoking their last cigarette, waiting for death.

I suggest we call Frankl's view on what provides meaning (3) the 'triadic source of meaning'. The conjunction of this with the two other main theses of Frankl's philosophy of life and human beings, i.e. (1) Nietzsche's thesis of existential endurance and (2) the primacy of the will to meaning, is the central message of Man's Search for Meaning. This isn't something Frankl himself maintains explicitly, and there's of course an element of interpretation to it (especially so, as the book generally is loosely structured and uses very informal language). But I believe it's well supported by a careful reading.

Harold S. Kushner, the author of the book's foreword, is a man whose life, sadly, has put him in a position that one would think should increase the chance of appreciating the book fully: he's been struggling to understand the illness and death of his son. However, he finds it significant that whereas the foreword to the 1962 edition was written by a prominent psychologist, Gordon Allport, the present foreword is written by a 'clergyman', as he calls himself: 'We have come to recognize that this is a profoundly religious book.'

I couldn't disagree more. Frankl was deeply religious and this is shown at many points in the book. But what in my view is the book's central message -- to repeat, the conjunction of (1) to (3) above -- clearly neither mentions nor necessarily implies religiosity in any form. Even if all of Frankl's religious views were removed from the book, its essence would be entirely unaffected.

And it's because of this that I can end with an evaluation which I dare say is a privilege for a reviewer of a book: no human being should fail to read it. Read it -- and hope that, unlike Frankl, you'll never exemplify its message in the extreme.

Child Sexual Abuse Statistics Are Astounding! I'm Glad World Leaders Are Tackling This Horrific Problem Head On! These Children Are Our Future!

I have taken the following information from Wikipedia to enlighten folks about the real extensive damage that is done to a child when they have been sexually abused. Pay close attention to the unbelievable statistics! I was blown away by these statistics that are almost 1/3 of society. I cannot repeat it enough, these children are our future LITERALLY! We need to do everything in our power to help them now and protect them from child predators! It's important that we understand cause and effect. The end-result of not doing anything is tramautic disorder in adulthood for the victims and then most of the time the victims become repeat offenders as adults perpetuating the dis-ease creating a dysfunctional society. It's an endless vicious cycle unless we take preventative measures now and educate the public that this is WRONG and will NOT BE TOLERATED BY SOCIETY! It will get progressively worse! You think it's bad now, imagine how it will be 5 or even 10 years from now if the problem is growing exponentially?!?! I don't even want to know! A solution could be to provide children a safe haven or refuge. Unfortunately, the little children are defenseless, vulnerable, trusting and are made to fear their predator that most would probably not turn them in.

Sexual abuse, also referred to as molestation, is the forcing of undesired sexual behavior by one person upon another, when that force falls short of being a sexual assault. The offender is referred to as a molester or molestor or abuser or sexual abuser. The term also covers any behavior by any adult towards a child to stimulate either the adult or child sexually. When the victim is younger than the age of consent, it is referred to as child sexual abuse.

Types of sexual abuse

There are many types of sexual abuse, including:

• Non-consensual, forced physical sexual behavior such as rape or sexual assault
• Sexual kissing, fondling, exposure of genitalia, and voyeurism.
• Exposing a child to pornography.
• Saying sexually suggestive statements towards a child.
• The use of a position of trust to compel otherwise unwanted sexual activity without physical force.
• Incest, when it is coerced by force or emotional manipulation.

Sexual abuse of children and minors

Child sexual abuse is a form of child abuse in which a child is abused for the sexual gratification of an adult or older adolescent. In addition to direct sexual contact, child sexual abuse also occurs when an adult indecently exposes their genitalia to a child, asks or pressures a child to engage in sexual activities, displays pornography to a child, or uses a child to produce child pornography.

EFFECTS of child sexual abuse include guilt and self-blame, flashbacks, nightmares, insomnia, fear of things associated with the abuse (including objects, smells, places, doctor's visits, etc.), self-esteem issues, sexual dysfunction, chronic pain, addiction, self-injury, suicidal ideation, somatic complaints, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, other mental illnesses (including borderline personality disorder and dissociative identity disorder), propensity to re-victimization in adulthood, and physical injury to the child, among other problems.

Sexual abuse by a family member is a form of incest, and can result in more serious and long-term psychological trauma, especially in the case of parental incest.

Approximately 15% to 25% of women and 5% to 15% of men were sexually abused when they were children. Most sexual abuse offenders are acquainted with their victims; approximately 30% are relatives of the child, most often fathers, uncles or cousins; around 60% are other acquaintances such as friends of the family, babysitters, or neighbors; strangers are the offenders in approximately 10% of child sexual abuse cases. Most child sexual abuse is committed by men; women commit approximately 14% of offenses reported against boys and 6% of offenses reported against girls. Most offenders who abuse pre-pubescent children are pedophiles, however a small percentage do not meet the diagnostic criteria for pedophilia.

NJ man convicted of 'sex tourism' gets 25 years

PHILADELPHIA – A federal judge has sentenced a wealthy New Jersey businessman to 25 years in prison on charges he traveled to eastern Europe to MOLEST BOYS in exchange for money and gifts.

Forty-five-year-old Anthony Mark Bianchi of North Wildwood, N.J., was sentenced Wednesday. He was convicted of having sex or attempting to have sex with at least a half-dozen boys on trips from 2003 to 2005.

Several boys were brought to Philadelphia from their isolated village in Moldova to testify against Bianchi during the 2007 trial. He has been in prison since his arrest in January 2006.

Bianchi's defense lawyer has said the defense was crippled by the government's threat to have his Moldovan co-counsel charged with witness intimidation if he came to Philadelphia to testify.

Ten of the victims crossed the globe to share their horrifying ordeal with an American jury.

"Sexual predators are a threat no matter the country in which they choose to commit their crimes. What makes this case so reprehensible is that this defendant PREYED on UNIQUELY VULNERABLE CHILDREN away from the spotlight of our justice system. It is gratifying that with its verdict, the jury has sent a strong message of deterrence; that Americans WILL NOT TOLERATE countrymen who travel overseas to pursue their victims," said U.S. Attorney Patrick Meehan.

The guidelines Bianchi faces range from 292 to 365 months. He also faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 5 years for counts 9 and 10. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 1.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was the investigating agency. The case also received assistance from the following: U.S. Embassy Moldova, U.S. Embassy Romania, Diplomatic Security Services, Center for Combating Trafficking Against Women & Children (Moldova), Romanian Organized Crime Police, Cape May County Prosecutor's Office, and North Wildwood Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Michael L. Levy and Kenya S. Mann prosecuted the case.

SAO PAULO, BRAZIL — The Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, has spent 13 years under house arrest in Myanmar. This week, the Burmese junta is likely to extend her detention for up to five years under the trumped-up charge of allowing a visitor into her compound.

During eight years as United Nations Special Rapporteur on Myanmar, I repeatedly called on the Burmese junta to release Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma’s 2,100 other political prisoners, to no avail. It is imperative that she be released immediately for the country’s process of reconciliation to move forward.

But while Suu Kyi has deservedly received a great deal of international attention over the past two decades, Myanmar’s ethnic minorities — more than one-third of the population — have suffered without international outcry. For Myanmar’s process of national reconciliation to be successful, the plight of the minorities must also be addressed.

Over the past 15 years, the Burmese Army has destroyed over 3,300 villages in a systematic and widespread campaign to subjugate ethnic groups. U.N. reports indicate that Burmese soldiers have frequently recruited child soldiers, used civilians as minesweepers and forced thousands of villagers into slave labor.

An official policy of impunity has empowered soldiers to rape and pillage. According to one account, in December 2008 a Burmese soldier marched into an ethnic Karen village in eastern Myanmar and abducted, RAPED and KILLED a 7-year old girl. Authorities refused to arrest the soldier; instead, officers threatened the parents with punishment if they did not accept a cash bribe to keep quiet.

In 2002, I received a report about 625 women who were systematically RAPED in Myanmar ’s Shan State over a five-year period. There was NOT a single account of successful prosecution.

I repeatedly documented the military’s many abuses in reports to the U.N. General Assembly and the U.N. Commission on Human Rights. My work is only one example of U.N. efforts in Myanmar — since 1990, U.N. representatives have visited the country 37 times in an attempt to facilitate dialogue and promote human rights.

It is time for the United Nations to take the next logical step: The Security Council must establish a commission of inquiry into crimes against humanity and impunity in Myanmar. The Security Council took similar steps with regard to Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. The situation in Myanmar is equally as critical.

Creating a commission of inquiry will accomplish three important goals:

First, it will make the junta accountable for its crimes with a potential indictment by the International Criminal Court. Second, it will address the widespread culture of impunity in Burma. Third, it has the potential to deter future crimes against humanity in Myanmar.

For two decades, ethnic minorities in Myanmar have suffered while our diplomatic efforts failed to bear fruit. The time has come for the Security Council to act.

Scientific knowledge reveals that great apes and humans share an exceedingly close genetic relationship. Like humans, these species are highly intelligent and social creatures whereby confining and subjecting them to invasive research their complex and psychological needs are not met. The Great Ape Protection Act would ban the use of great apes (including chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans, and gibbons) in invasive research across the United States.

This act would also prohibit the transport of great apes and ensure that federally owned chimpanzees be retired and moved to permanent sanctuary. You'll be pleased to know that this bill would also make permanent the National Institute of Health's breeding of great apes for research purposes. The decisions of other western countries have already begun to implement such bans, and the time has come for the United States to do the same. The bill's latest version in the 111th Congress provides civil penalties of up to $10,000 for each day such an offense occurs.

I have always been a strong advocate of legislation that protects animals. This Congress I have cosponsored several pieces of legislation pertaining to the humane and ethical treatment of animals, including the Captive Primate Safety Act and the Shark Conservation Act.

A nine-month-long undercover investigation by The HSUS has exposed the mistreatment of nearly 300 chimpanzees and other primates at the New Iberia Research Center (NIRC) in Louisiana. WICHITA, Kan. Wichita police say the cases of teenage girls being forced into sexual slavery are increasing in the city.

Police and social workers have investigated four such cases this year and they suspect there are many other young girls at risk. They blame the increase on street gangs, who particularly exploit runaways and homeless children. They believe that 300 to 400 Wichita-area children every year are at risk of becoming victims of sexual exploitation.

Mike Nagy, an officer with the Wichita-Sedgwick County Exploited and Missing Child Unit, says gangs trade and sell children like slaves. But the crimes are hard to investigate because the victims often are brainwashed or threatened, and most won't testify.

"They need to know that we have no intention of arresting or prosecuting them," said Kent Bauman, an EMCU officer. "Our purpose when we work these cases is to go after the pimps and gangs who are harming these children."

The extent of the problem, which began growing worse in the past few years, is more extensive than police had originally thought.

The gangs lure the children with food, money, shelter and romance, police said. Gang members train their victims in sex acts, often using pornographic movies as "training films."

The victims then are either forced into the local sex trade or trafficked on the Internet or to larger cities., police said.

Social worker Karen Countryman-Roswurm, who has studied the problem and interviewed hundreds of victims, said the pimps can make hundreds of thousands of dollars off a single child.

Street gangs have learned that sex trafficking is safer and more lucrative than dealing in guns or drugs, Bauman said.

The gangs also are making a lot of money from the porn industry, Countryman-Roswurm said. The customers who are creating a demand for child pornography also should be held accountable, she said.

"Every time they buy a pornographic film or pay for sex, they are helping create demand for a crime where children are exploited," she said.

And while the victims are children from every race and social level, Countryman-Roswurm said, most of the customers come from the same group.

"The people who create the demand and provide the cash for the sex trade are mostly white, middle-aged, middle- or upper-income men," she said. "We have to stop arresting the victims and arrest instead the buyer and seller." [YES YES YES I couldn't agree anymore!]

Social workers and law enforcement officers will gather Tuesday at a conference titled "Community Action to End Domestic Sexual Exploitation" to coordinate a stronger response to the problem.

12. When the Gentiles sin, they will be destroyed, even though they never had God’s written law. And the Jews, who do have God’s law, will be judged by that law when they fail to obey it. 13. Now I have a special message for every homophobic person on this planet. I ask that you please hear me out. I would like to share my perspective and observations for the past 39 years of my entire life.

I would first like to begin with my childhood experience. Growing up my parents had many gay friends. I didn't know they were gay at the time. As a child I didn't distinguish the differences because I only saw and felt was LOVE and RESPECT. They were couples who had loved each other for 5, 10 and even 20 years. They became an extension of my family as I would call them auntie or uncle. Some even had children who were my childhood friends. It wasn't until I reached Junior High that I was introduced to labels and discrimination. I heard classmates calling a male classmate a 'faggot' and then harassed him repeatedly, eventually leading to a vicious attack that landed him in the hospital. I don't even think the kid was gay, they ONLY thought he was. Let me point out that I grew up in a very nice suburban neighborhood. These were not street thugs, they were regular clean cut boys. Now let me ask you, as a child who do you think I thought was the EVIL person(s)? The boys who name called, harassed and beat up another boy? or the boy who did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to provoke this reaction? If you truly love God and know Him, then I believe your answer would be the former. Who do you think these boys learned that hateful behavior from? Their parents and their church. They were taught to hate. A child comes into this world still connected to God and knows nothing other than LOVE! Until their environment causes them to feel and think otherwise...

Now let me jump forward to the present day. My mom currently lives near Cedar Sinai hospital in Los Angeles which is adjacent to West Hollywood, a well known Gay community in Los Angeles. Let me first say that West Hollywood has to be the cleanest most well kept city in Los Angeles County. I have brought up my mom's location to point out that you don't find gay people knocking door to door recruiting heterosexual (straight) people to convert to gaydom. You don't find gay people at schools trying to recruit, kidnap or rape children. You don't find gay people drunk in the streets having orgies in public. It is not the Sodom and Gomorrah pastor's like to preach. Not even on the weekends. In fact, my mom couldn't feel safer. Everybody minds their own business and helps out when necessary. Now I on the other hand live smack dab in the middle of all the major studios in Los Angeles. I know I too am surrounded by gay people. I honestly couldn't distinguish who was gay and who was not. Frankly, I don't care. All I see are law abiding tax paying citizens who take care of our community. What gay people do in the privacy of their home and who they love is none of my business period. In the same way what a heterosexual (straight) person or couple does in the privacy of their home is none of my business. As long as they are good people, kind and respectful to all of humanity that to me are important qualities of ANY human being.

If you believe in INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS then it should very well apply to all and not a select few. Gay couples should at least be allowed to be protected under a civil union law that prevents their straight family members from scavenging assets like vultures upon a gay partner's death. Thus, leaving the surviving partner with NOTHING! Did you know that gay couples don't have hospital visitation rights, only 'family' members are allowed? They are NOT able to personally say 'good bye' to their partner on their death bed! How wrong is that!? Look their life has nothing to do with you. Their life is between them and God. As Jesus once said, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and give to God what is God's."

Let me ask you this, have you ever heard about a gay criminal? Do you know of any gay murderers, gay rapist, gay child molestors, gay pimps, gay drug dealers, gay gangsters, gay thieves, gay terrorists? I want you to seriously think about that for a moment. Because the only answer you will discover is NO. I bet you never stopped your hatred long enough to even consider this question.

I believe your attention is entirely misguided and missplaced. It is heterosexual (straight) men of every race who commit all of the crimes I mentioned above. Perhaps a small percentage of these crimes are attributed to (straight) women. Everyday we hear news about a (straight) man committing a murder or a woman was raped by a (straight) man. The pedophiles across America and around the world are (straight) men who molest children and destroy their lives. Let me point out that most of these child molestor's reported are the (straight and married) father, uncle or pastor of their church. Why do you think prostestution exists? The answer is because of paying customers that are (straight and sometimes married) men. Who goes to sex brothels around the world? The answer (straight) men. Who do we hear that is keeping our teens as sex slaves in America? The answer is (straight) men and women. The gangsters who sell drugs, steal, kill and destroy communities across America are ALL (straight) men and women. Who do you think ALL of the children in our foster care system belong to? Yep, you guessed right UNFIT (straight) men and women. And the radical muslim terrorists, well that's another no-brainer, they are all (straight) men! I AM ONLY SHARING FACTS with you that I want you to seriously think about. Therefore, who do you think DESERVES your attention? Who do you think is a GREATER THREAT to society. If you are in your right mind and truly love God, even if you didn't know God, I have no doubt you have answered the (straight) CRIMINALS who are out to DESTROY the fabric of our being! PLEASE STOP DEFLECTING attention away from THE TRUTH! Let's get real here! It is these heterosexual (straight) human parasites and perverts that are abominations in the eyes of the LORD.

Satan comes to STEAL, KILL and DESTROY! These are the criminals. Do you have ANY idea how awful you appear to God when He see's His earthly representatives hunt down homosexual people to harass, beat-up and sometimes KILL? You have focused your attention on these people, YET there are MILLIONS of God's children Ophaned, MILLIONS of God's children sexually abused by pedophiles, MILLIONS of God's children being kidnapped and forced into sexual slavery and slave labor, MILLIONS of God's children DYING from starvation and disease, MILLIONS of God's children being KILLED on the streets by gangsters! As long as everything I mentioned CONTINUES to EXIST, you have no right to evoke your righteous indignation upon gay people. You have CONVENIENTLY FORGOTTEN that they have to answer to God, BUT SO DO YOU!

One last thing, Sodom and Gomorrah is every (straight) sexual and massage parlor across America and have you seen the commercials for 'Girls Gone Wild'??? These ordinary looking college students are all (straight) young men and women who are filmed having orgies at all spring break locations. How about the (straight) married couples who like to attend 'swing' parties? This term means they can have sex with whomever they want for the night. Anything goes! How about those graphic (straight) pimping gangster rap videos filled with sexuality and violence? This is what is INFLUENCING YOUR CHILDREN! I'm just pointing out that it is time for the religious community to reflect upon themselves. You claim to be representatives of God. Well it's time you start acting like it. Your hateful actions and words scare people away from knowing God. In fact, I believe you're the reason why there are so many atheists! Aren't you supposed to be a reflection of God? Nevada's legislature has approved a bill that targets juvenile prostitution.

Senator John Hambrick, the bill's sponsor, tells OneNewsNow that the problem is serious -- especially in Las Vegas.

"Last year and the year before, the Metropolitan Police Department Vice Squad arrested roughly 207 pre-teenage prostitutes," he notes, "and they were prostituted out between 10 and 15 times a day, six days a week."

The bill targets the pimps in hopes to reduce the problem of human trafficking. "If these pimps are arrested and charged with trafficking minors after the criminal side is over, they will be subject to having their assets frozen to make sure they cannot get rid of them," Hambrick explains. "And upon conviction, those assets will subject to forfeiture."

He says the pimps make millions of dollars off the minors. If the children are 14 to 18 years old, the pimps will forfeit $100,000. If they are under 14, the forfeiture will be up to a half-million dollars.

The forfeited funds will be used to help the girls leave the illicit trade. The bill has been sent to Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons.

A man and a woman from Reisterstown are in custody -- charged with running a prostitution ring involving teen-age girls.

Investigators say the couple used the Craigslist web site to sell sex with those girls -- and they say customers took them up on the offer at locations in Baltimore and Howard Counties.

Prosecutors say the suspects used three girls -- a 17 year old and two 15 year olds. Both of the suspects made their first appearance in federal court in Baltimore Monday afternoon, to face child sex trafficking charges.

Experts say many prostitutes started out as child-victims of sex traffickers. ‘Most of the people who you see on a corner who look like they're making a choice, actually were sex trafficking victims as children,’ said Sidney Ford, who runs the 'You Are Never Alone' center in Baltimore, which assists women who have been working as prostitutes. She says the average age they start is 11 to 13.

‘Most of the time they're brought in by an adult -- often it's a female adult -- who gets their trust, who invites them to a party, who invites them to something fun,’ she said. ‘She's told that the things that have been bought for need to be paid for, and then she finds herself out on a prostitution strip or in a brothel, or otherwise paying off that debt through prostitution.’

In the most recent case, prosecutors say the two suspects -- Byron Thompson and Lea Bell -- lived in an apartment in Reisterstown. A neighbor says they used to lock a teen-age girl out on the balcony.

They are both charged with sex trafficking of a minor, and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of a minor. A conviction could bring anywhere from 10 years to life in prison. ‘When people realize that they can face a mandatory sentence of 10 years each time they're involved in trafficking a child for sex, we think that will have an impact,’ said Rod Rosenstein, the US Attorney for Baltimore.

Three Americans and an Egyptian accused of child trafficking are expected in court today, and face up to seven years in prison if found guilty, in a case that highlights Egypt’s lack of adoption laws and which critics say could be politically motivated.

Their defence lawyers say the four, who are all Christian, were merely trying to adopt the children and have fallen victim to the absence of adoption legislation in Egypt, where the constitution is based on Sharia, or Islamic law.

“Islamic law doesn’t allow for adoption, but Christianity does,” said Neguib Guebrail, one of the defence lawyers. He said the lack of any clear adoption laws for Christians had forced the community to resort to forging documents.

Early last year, Suzan Haglouf, a US citizen of Egyptian origin, and her Egyptian husband, Medhat Metyas, adopted a newborn from a Coptic Christian orphanage.

The couple admit to forging documents to say Ms Haglouf was the biological mother because Egypt has no legal framework for adoption, but they insist they did not “pay” for the child, making only a US$70 (Dh260) donation to the orphanage.

They were arrested in December when applying for visas to visit the United States.

The US Embassy asked for a DNA sample to prove the child was theirs and when Ms Haglouf declined they notified the Egyptian authorities.

The other couple, Iris Botros, 40, and her husband Louis Andros, 70, from Durham, North Carolina, came to Egypt last autumn and “adopted” newborn twins from the same orphanage.

They too forged documents to say Ms Botros, who is Egyptian, gave birth to the twins and also donated $4,600 to the orphanage, their lawyers say.

They were also arrested after applying for visas at the US Embassy when Ms Botros admitted she was not the twins’ biological mother.

The prosecution accuses the two couples, as well as their accomplices, of human trafficking, forging documents, buying children and trying to smuggle them out of the country.

At least 13 people are on trial, including the two couples, at least two doctors who wrote certificates for the three children, a nun who ran the orphanage, an official there who helped with forging the parental documents and an Egyptian banker who had put the couples in touch with the orphanage, according to defence lawyers.

Adoption is known to occur within the Christian community, though the government usually turns a blind eye.
