Finlay van der Werken’s life is now a collection of memories closely guarded by his parents. The 16-year-old is remembered as a loving son, a devoted older brother and a loyal friend.
“I still hear his laughter,” his father, GJ van der Werken, said. “Finlay was a typical oldest son. (He was) very responsible, looking after his twin brothers, making friends wherever he went.
“He had the tendency to gravitate towards kids that didn’t seem to have any other friends or that seemed to be struggling with school or contact, so he would just embrace them and make them feel welcome.“
In early February of 2024, a migraine kept Finlay home from school. His mother, Hazel, said this would sometimes happen if Finlay was getting sick. But his condition got worse, and Hazel decided to take him to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.
“He was crying out in pain a lot, and just kind of looking at me, like get me there somewhere,” Hazel said. “You could tell he didn’t know what was going on, but he knew it was not normal, so I drove as fast as I could.
“When I got to the hospital. I just abandoned the car at the doors of ER and we ran in. There was just so many people. The corridors were lined with people. We sat down and Finlay just kept crying out. He never cries out in pain. He would never do that if it wasn’t really an emergency.“
Hazel says he would not see a doctor for hours, despite telling the nurses Finlay was not doing well.
“When I went up at three in the morning, they said, well, we only have one doctor, but there’s another one coming in at four. I don’t know where that one doctor was,” Hazel recalled.
In reviewing the hospital records, Martin and Hillier lawyer, Meghan Walker, said, “Finlay was triaged at almost exactly 10:00. He wasn’t actually seen by a physician until 6:22 in the morning.”
According to the statement of claim about what happened, when he was seen the following morning, the doctor said Finlay “was experiencing sepsis/pneumonia with hypoxia and he was at high risk for acute deterioration.”
His oxygens levels, which the lawyer said hospital records show had been dropping throughout the night, were also a concern.
“I remember just saying to Finlay, like Finlay we’ve got to get, you know, we’re looking at this screen that’s got his oxygen saturation and I’m like, we have to get it up,” Hazel said.
“His breathing was so shallow by this point, and he said, ‘I can’t do deep. It hurts too much,’ and I said, you’ve got to try, you got to try.”
Finlay eventually needed to be intubated. The decision was made to transfer him to SickKids hospital in Toronto. But before that could happen, he went into cardiac arrest. The statement of claim said “the contributing cause of arrest was listed as septic shock, pneumonia.”
Finlay arrived at SickKids and was taken to the ICU. He was in hypotensive shock and placed on ECMO, a life-support system that helps take over a patient’s heart and lung function.
But staff told Hazel and GJ that Finlay’s organ function was getting worse, and to continue on ECMO was considered “futile.”
“We had to make the decision… take Finlay off life support,” Hazel said through tears. GJ added, “Or risk that the situation would escalate even more and he would wake up and die in a lot of pain.”
After Finlay died, Hazel and GJ say they met with hospital staff to review what happened. “They didn’t say they were wrong,” Hazel said. “But they acknowledged that if Finlay had been seen earlier, it could have been a different outcome.“
Global News reached out for comment on this story.
In a written statement, Halton Healthcare officials said, “We are deeply committed to delivering high-quality, compassionate care to the communities we serve across all three of our hospitals: Milton District Hospital, Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, and Georgetown Hospital, as well as our community sites.
“Like many hospitals, we are seeing more patients presenting with increasingly complex health conditions and co-morbidities, often requiring longer stays and more intensive care. This places significant demand on our emergency departments, patient flow, bed availability and the patient experience.”
The family has since launched a lawsuit alleging, in part, that the health care team failed to monitor Finlay, have appropriate protocols in place for his treatment, or inform the family of the true nature of his condition.
Meghan Walker is the lead counsel on the matter.
“The experts are quite clear and unequivocal that this was a treatable condition and had he been treated promptly, there is no doubt in my mind that he would still be here today, which I think is the hardest thing for my clients to deal with,” Walker said.
“He was triaged as the second-highest level in triage. The guidelines say that 95 per cent of the time, they should be seen within 15 minutes.”
The hospital says they are making changes to track data more closely, refining their on-call coverage criteria protocols and other tools and working groups to improve patient flow and communication.
In an update provided July 18, they noted that a “Length of Stay Committee” was launched in fall of 2024 and a “Command Centre” was opened on July 1, 2025, with the goal of helping improve flow in their emergency departments. Furthermore, Dr. Ian Preyra has been onboarded as the new Vice President of Medical Affairs and Academics, and Dr. Prashant Phalpher is the new Chief of Emergency and Program Medical Director.
But the family wants more awareness so something like this never happens again.
“We feel that we have been let down and we cannot trust the medical system as it is right now,” GJ said. As a result, the van der Werken family is launching an awareness campaign called “Finlay’s Voice.”
“We felt we needed to stand up in place of Finlay and be his voice in the sense of what is it we can do,” Hazel said. “We’ve been through this tragedy and we’re still living that every day. We can choose to say nothing, we can choose to be silent… but if you don’t tell these stories, nobody knows.
“If you don’t tell the stories, then how is change brought about?”
The family hopes their tragedy can spark renewed efforts to improve deficiencies in the health care system, and is calling on MPPs, the Ministry of Health and local stakeholders to get involved.
Halton Healthcare declined an on-camera interview and by email told Global News they do not comment on individual patient cases or litigation matters.
As of Friday, July 25, Walker said a statement of defence had not been filed.

MARTINEZ, Calif. - A Delta Airlines pilot and his ex-girlfriend made their first court appearance on Wednesday in Martinez on charges that they allegedly sexually abused the woman's daughter for years.
High bail ordered for ex-couple
What we know: Rustom Bhagwagar, 34, and Jennifer Powell, 45, did not enter pleas and will return to Contra Costa County Superior Court in August.
Judge Glenn Kim ordered them not to contact the girl. They are each being held on $15 million bail.
"Protecting the safety of children and young people in our community is one of the highest priorities for the district attorney's office," said District Attorney Diana Becton.
She said the two face serious consequences if convicted of abusing the girl from 2018 to 2023.
"They could carry a sentence for each defendant of up to 15 years to life in prison," Becton said.
Identical 24-count complaint for both defendants
What we know: Both Bhagwagar and Oowell have been charged with lewd acts with a child, aggravated sexual abuse, and sexual assault.
"There are 24 felony counts against both defendants in this case. All 24 counts are identical," said Haleigh Parkinson, the prosecutor handling the case. "Obviously, this is a tough place to be in, and we want to make sure we do everything we can to protect her identity now and going forward."
According to court documents obtained by KTVU, the survivor is Powell's daughter.
On Saturday night, Contra Costa sheriff's deputies and Homeland Security agents pulled the pilot from the Boeing 757 he co-piloted after it arrived at SFO from Minneapolis.

The Indiana home where disgraced teacher Brittany Fortinberry is accused of making teenagers as young as 13 wear “Scream” masks while having group sex with her has been put up for sale after her husband dumped her, according to a report.
Fortinberry‘s husband, Nicholas, filed for divorce from the 31-year-old educator, and the couple can no longer afford their Martinsdale home, according to divorce documents seen by TMZ.
The house is where police say some of Fortinberry’s alleged sick sexual encounters with minors took place last year — and where a stripper pole and sex toys were found inside, according to court documents seen by Fox59.
Nicholas filed for divorce from his wife in February, around the time cops began investigating her.
The couple had been using the monthly benefits from the US Department of Veteran Affairs to pay bills, but the money is no longer being deposited into their joint bank account, according to the divorce documents, which said it was being funneled “elsewhere.”
Without it, the now-fired teacher’s estranged husband can no longer make monthly house payments, the docs state.
A judge recently granted Nicholas’ motion to list their home. The expected price was not detailed.
Fortinberry faces a staggering 41 felonies related to a twisted string of alleged sex crimes involving at least six students as young as 13. If convicted, she could die behind bars.
Fortinberry allegedly plied the kids she met at two different schools with alcohol and magic mushrooms before having sex with them, including at least one alleged incident where she had the boys wear masks from the “Scream” movie franchise, according to police.
On at least one occasion, her children were in the house in bed while the alleged orgies took place, police have alleged.
Fortinberry has pleaded not guilty to the charges against her and is being held in the Morgan County Jail. Her next court appearance will be a pretrial conference scheduled for August.
One of her alleged victims was a teenager she had hired to baby-sit her kids, according to prosecutors.
Fortinberry allegedly offered between $100 and $800 to the boys for photos of their genitals, and would regularly send nude photos of herself, her original charging documents claimed.
She would often threaten to kill herself if her victims said anything about the abuse, according to the charging documents.
Among the charges Fortinberry faces are incest, multiple counts of child molesting, conducting a performance that is harmful to minors, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

A woman accused of impersonating four nurses from other states and using around 20 aliases since 2020 has been arrested and charged with dozens of counts, police said.
Shannon Nicole Womack, 39, has been charged with 43 counts, including endangering the welfare of a care-dependent person, identity theft, forgery and falsely pretending to hold a license, according to court records.
Womack is also charged with use and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to court records.
Womack was arrested on Monday, court records show.
Womack gave police false identification when she was pulled over by police in a routine traffic stop in April on Interstate 79, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
An investigation revealed that approximately 20 different aliases and seven different Social Security numbers were associated with Womack, according to police.
A search warrant was then executed on her vehicle, and investigators found multiple forms of identification, prescription medications prescribed to different victims, medical documents and various pieces of medical equipment, police said.
Womack posed as a licensed practical nurse, registered nurse and registered nurse supervisor at multiple rehabilitation and nursing home facilities throughout Pennsylvania, police said.
She was using the identities and credentials of four confirmed nurses from southern states, police said.
"Womack was able to secure these nursing positions through staffing agencies by submitting fraudulently signed documents and also by creating a false LLC to self-deploy herself to multiple jobs," police said in a statement.
"Womack obtained employment through staffing agencies and even ... was able to create her own host agency," Pennsylvania State Police trooper Rocco Gagliardi said at a press conference. "So she was picking up the phone and transferring those employment jobs, careers, to herself."
Police believe she began the deception in 2020 and continued it across many states on the eastern side of the country.
"During that COVID time, they got hit hard, and they needed help," Gagliardi said. "So it wasn't uncommon for these different residence locations, agencies, to reach out to host agencies and say we need some extra shifts filled. That started in 2020 and it was such an easy transition, she just kept going after that."
The investigation remains ongoing, police said.
Womack's bail was set at $250,000. Her next court appearance was scheduled for July 29.

A Miami-Dade sheriff's deputy arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl threatened to kill the teen when she tried to end their relationship, according to a new federal affidavit.
Deputy Carle Miranda Blum, 51, was arrested Wednesday and accused of receiving multiple videos and images of the victim engaged in sexually explicit conduct, according to the United States Attorney’s Office, Southern District of Florida.
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz confirmed Thursday that Blum is a 29-year veteran of the department.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office was tipped off to Blum's alleged relationship with a minor on July 14 by a person described as "Witness 1," according to the affidavit filled out by an FBI agent employed at the Miami field office.
Three days after the tip, the victim was "involuntarily hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation under the Coleman-Baker Act in Atlanta, Georgia," the affidavit details. The witness told law enforcement that the victim's mental health had deteriorated over the past year that she was involved with Blum.
The witness also told authorities that the day after the victim turned 18, she had tried to board a flight to Miami to meet Blum when she was Baker Acted.
Prosecutors said the victim checked in a bag, and Blum was caught on surveillance video picking it up at Miami International Airport.
Evidence of a sexual relationship
The witness reportedly gave authorities permission to review the victim's electronic device which contained videos from at least as far back as Oct. 26, 2024, when the victim was 17.
The affidavit states that Instagram and text messages revealed a sexual relationship between Blum and the victim. The two would allegedly send each other sexual videos and voice messages, all while the victim was a minor.
Authorities also believe Blum traveled from Miami-Dade to Atlanta, Georgia, where she would have sex with the victim and record the encounters.
In some of those messages, Blum allegedly provided a countdown until the victim turned 18, telling her that she intended to marry her.
The FBI said Blum also referred to buying the victim a black Honda Accord, which registrations records confirm she purchased.
But things later took a turn.
At one point, the victim appeared to try to end the relationship with Blum, which the deputy seemed to take as "a betrayal," the affidavit details.
During the break up, Blum allegedly sent messages including, "Leave me and see what hapoens [sic]" and "WE ARE NEVER DONE!!!!"
Then, the deputy allegedly sent a threat in which she swears that she will drive her "favorite knife" through the victim's throat.
Just days before her arrest, Blum had left South Florida and was traveling to Atlanta to be with the victim after she was released from the hospital, the FBI said.
Blum faces a charge of production of visual depictions involving the sexual exploitation of minors, which carries a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison and a statutory maximum of up to 30 years.
She also faces a charge of receipt of visual depictions involving the sexual exploitation of minors, which carries a mandatory minimum of five years in prison and a statutory maximum of up to 20 years.
Response from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said Thursday that her understanding is that Blum is currently being held in a Georgia jail, where the federal investigation against her is taking place.
"Once they move her from there is when we will take our next steps," the sheriff said. "The immediate will be a relief of duty which will happen shortly upon the processing.”
Cordero-Stutz said she was "very disturbed" by the allegations.
"These allegations are not only criminal, they are a betrayal of the badge, the public trust, and the oath we swear to uphold," she said in a statement Wednesday. "The actions alleged stand in direct opposition to everything we represent as law enforcement officers and as human beings. We have assisted our federal partners throughout the investigation, and I remain committed to full transparency and accountability, no matter who is involved."

A former FBI agent convicted of rape faces up to 122 years in prison, according to the Montgomery County State's Attorney Office.
Eduardo Valdivia was found guilty on six counts of second-degree rape and two counts of fourth-degree sex offense, after sexually assaulting three young women at his Gaithersburg tattoo shops.
Valdivia, 41, of Gaithersburg, was arrested in November 2024 after the first victim told police in October that she was raped by someone she knew as "Lalo Brown."
At the time of his arrest, Valdivia had been a supervisory special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for over a decade.
He owned a tattoo studio, DC Fine Line Tattoos, in the 9800 block of Washingtonian Boulevard in Gaithersburg.
In November 2024, a second victim came forward with a similar report of sexual assault, according to police.
Both women, in their early 20s, reported they were lured to the tattoo studio under the pretense of modeling opportunities with Exeter Models.
Following news of his arrest, a third victim came forward and disclosed that she had been raped by Valdivia in October 2022 at a tattoo studio in the 12000 block of Travilah Road in Potomac. She said was 18 years old at the time.
Valdivia communicated with the victims under aliases including "Lalo Brown" and "L. Boogie," luring them to the tattoo studios under the pretense of free tattoos and modeling opportunities, according to prosecutors.
He also used the alias "Dr. Tiffany Kim," pretending to be a female psychologist and the CEO, president, and producer of a profitable and well-connected modeling agency in email communications with two of the victims, the State's Attorney's Office said.
Valdivia faces a maximum sentence of 122 years in prison.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 14, 2025.

A Maryland FBI agent is standing trial for allegedly sexually assaulting three women at his tattoo parlors.
Eduardo Valdivia allegedly promised the women free tattoos and assaulted them during filmed modeling shoots, prosecutors say.
He was a supervisor in the FBI and had a side job running tattoo parlors in Gaithersburg and Potomac.
He used the Instagram account “DC Fine Line Tattoos” and the fake names Lalo Brown and El Boogie to lure women, according to court documents.
Prosecutors allege Valdivia promised the women modeling contracts, then filmed himself sexually assaulting the women and used the contracts as blackmail to get them to return.
In court Friday, one of the accusers broke down in tears on the stand. She later testified about the incident-
“I didn’t know what was going to happen…,” she testified. “… I froze in shock… I was too scared to move.”
Valdivia’s defense attorney Robert Bonsib maintains the sex was consensual.
“These women went to a business office … an open area where they could walk out the door any time they wanted,” he said. “And they not only did not walk out the door, they came back.”
Valdivia faces 18 charges: eight counts of felony rape and 10 counts of misdemeanor sexual offense. He could be facing decades in prison if convicted on the sexual assault charges.
Agent previously found not guilty in Metro shooting
In 2020, Valdivia was charged with attempted murder for shooting a man on a Metro train, prosecutors say
The man asked for money and walked away cursing, prosecutors say. Valdivia told him to watch his mouth.
The encounter escalated, and Valdivia shot the man twice.
Valdivia later testified he felt threatened.
A jury found him not guilty on all counts.
Valdivia is suspended without pay, the FBI said. The agency declined to comment further.

MARION COUNTY, Fla. - Forty-eight men were recently arrested in a Florida undercover child sex predator sting called "Operation Seek and Yee Shall Find Out," officials say.
6-day Marion County undercover operation
What we know: Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods hosted a news conference on Wednesday afternoon to announce the results of the operation. Woods was joined by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, State Attorney Bill Gladson and representatives from Sen. Ashley Moody’s office.
"Seek and Yee Shall Find Out" was a six-day undercover operation in Marion County, Florida. Officials said 48 men were arrested during the child sex predator sting.
Authorities said the 48 men arrested used various social media platforms, including Snapchat and dating apps, to meet children in Marion County ranging in age from 13-15. The alleged predators brought cocaine, guns, condoms, alcohol, cash, marijuana and other drugs, investigators said.
Those arrested came from local locations, such as Gainesville and Orlando, as well as six foreign nationals from outside the country in places such as Mexico, El Salvador, India, Dubai and Jamaica. Officials even said one of the people arrested was a student from the University of Florida (UF) on a visa.
The men were arrested on numerous charges, including traveling to meet a minor for illegal sexual conduct, human trafficking, using a computer to solicit a child, unlawful use of a two-way communications device and transmitting material harmful to a minor.
The arrests were a collaboration between multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Florida Highway Patrol, the Lake City Police Department, the Polk County Sheriff's Office and the Ocala Police Department.
‘Heinous crimes’
What they're saying: Woods delivered a clear message to parents during the press conference.
"You need to pay attention to your children," he said. "These crimes are heinous, and we do not tolerate these crimes. … You don't want these operations to be successful, because you don't want these crimes to occur."
"My office routinely conducts these types of operations," Woods said. "With each operation, we catch more and more. The number of offenders only goes up. Parents, we will never arrest every single one of them. You have to know what your child is doing online. And children have to know what dangers are lurking online. As a sheriff and as a father, I understand the anger and disgust a parent has towards these types of individuals. I assure you that we will continue to attack this plague head-on."
Uthmeier said he wants the alleged predators arrested to go away for "as long as possible," before then, in some cases, being deported. He called technology and social media platforms the "tools of the devil."
"There is no defense," he said. "There is no justification, there is no excuse. It cannot happen, and it will not happen in Florida."

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The four people found dead in Lake County along Carrington Road in Tiptonville have been identified by authorities amid an abandoned baby girl investigation in Dyer County on Tuesday.
Investigators with the Dyer County and Lake County Sheriff’s Departments are now investigating the death of four people alongside the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the FBI.
Authorities have identified the four people as Cortney Rose, Matthew Wilson, Adrianna Williams, and Braydon Williams, a 15-year-old boy, and say they were all related to the baby that was abandoned.
It appears the incident involves the ongoing investigation of a baby found in someone’s front yard. The child was found in a baby seat at a residence on Old Highway 20 near the Tigrett area.
The local district attorney, Danny Goodman Jr., confirmed Wednesday that the baby was related to those who were found deceased.
The woman who discovered the baby answered her front door Wednesday, still visibly shaken up. She told WREG, with a trembling voice, that she did not want to go on camera because this is an active investigation.
A deputy said that a dark-colored minivan or white midsize SUV was reported to have dropped off a baby at a random person’s home. The baby was not hurt and was identified.
After the baby was identified, the sheriff’s office said they wanted to speak with Rose, Wilson, and Williams.
How they died is still very much a mystery, as well as how a home at an out-of-the-way location was chosen as a drop-off spot for a child too young to tell the story about how she ended up left behind in the middle of the county, in the middle of the day.
“This is a deeply saddening day for our community. We are committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served,” said Sheriff Box.
When asked whether there was any ongoing public safety threat, D.A. Goodman said he did not think so, saying he believes the findings will show this is an isolated incident, not a random attack.
“They’re devastated. We’re just thankful that the baby was spared, grateful for that,” said Amy Anderson, a family friend.
She knew the victims Adrianna Williams, her partner Matthew Wilson, Adrianna’s mother Cortney Rose, and Cortney’s teenage son.
“They were really good people, Adrianna was the sweetest person, she loved being a mama,” said Anderson.
She also talked to Matthew’s mother about him, “He was a wonderful daddy. He loved the baby. And Cortney, she loved her kids.”
“It’s tragic. It’s tearing everybody apart. Everybody don’t know what to think, there’s been rumors here and there, but I just wish everybody would slow down on the rumors and wait until stuff is actually put out there as far as the truth goes so that there’s no more heartache than what already is,” said Anderson.
Lake County is directly north of Dyer County in northwest Tennessee near the Kentucky border, about two hours north of Memphis.
“We knew we were dealing with something more than your typical homicide so I knew we were going to need the expertise of TBI,” said Goodman.
If you have any information related to the bodies found or the abandoned baby, contact the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office at 731-285-2802.

Arkansas authorities are saying they don't suspect any connection between the killer and the 2 victims. That makes me wonder if the suspect is a serial killer? I mean that was pretty daring targeting the family of four at a State Park in broad daylight on a busy weekend with a knife no less. Authorities should look into a connection to the suspect and unsolved murder cases in Oklahoma where he moved from.
He's a clean cut school teacher who secretly murders people to get off and loves the fact that no one would ever suspect him. He is like Jekyll and Hyde. He went to the State Park looking scruffy and authorities found him days later at a barber shop getting cleaned up. I bet you he has left a long trail of dead bodies in Oklahoma and whereever else he has lived. This wasn't a random killing. The suspect went to Devil's Den State Park with the intention of killing people and he chose to target and stalk this happy family of four. (emphasis mine)

WASHINGTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — A suspect has been arrested after a husband and wife were killed while hiking at Devil's Den with their children on Saturday, July 26.
The victims were identified on Sunday as Clinton David Brink, 41, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41. Officials said the couple was hiking with their two daughters when they were attacked on Saturday afternoon. The two girls, who are 7 and 9, were reportedly not injured and are safe with family members.
Arkansas State Police (ASP) said that Andrew James McGann, a 28-year-old man from Springdale, was taken into custody at a Springdale barber shop at 4:57 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, five days after the fatal attack. He faces two capital murder charges.
ASP Maj. Stacie Rhoads told 5NEWS it does not appear the suspect had a connection to the victims.
Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders joined Secretary of the Department of Public Safety Col. Mike Hagar and Secretary of the Department of Parks, Heritage, and Tourism Shea Lewis at the ASP Troop L Headquarters in Lowell on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. to discuss the investigation.
Sanders said something like this should never happen, and she hopes the entire state will wrap its arms around the Brink family.
The governor said calling the Brink family was one of the hardest things she's had to do, and thanked law enforcement for acting swiftly.
"If you commit a violent, senseless act here in our state our law enforcement will hunt you down and bring you to justice," Sanders said.
While an arrest has been confirmed, details leading up to the arrest and how law enforcement located McGann at the barber shop are still unknown.
Rhoads said they're still exploring motive and don't want to release information prematurely, with a focus on obtaining a conviction.
Rhoads said McGann had recently moved to Arkansas from Oklahoma and had gotten a job at a local school.
Broken Arrow Public Schools in Oklahoma confirmed in a statement to CBS affiliate KOTV that McGann was a teacher in the district during the 2023-24 school year:
"The man who was arrested in Arkansas for the murders at Devils Den State Park was a teacher for Broken Arrow Public Schools during the 23/24 school year. He was a 5th grade teacher at Spring Creek Elementary during the 23/24 school year and left of his own accord to work out of state. As with all employees hired by the district, he was subjected to and passed the legally required background checks prior to being hired. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family affected by this unimaginable act of violence."
The ASP captain also shared the public was "instrumental" in McGann's capture, stating that tips came in from across the country.
"We have to have that public assistance, and when we opened up that tipline we were able to see the public was interested in helping us," Rhoads said.
Sanders added that there's still a long road ahead of grief for the Brink family, which has asked for privacy.
"The family is asking for privacy during this very difficult time as they grieve and learn how to navigate this new reality," the Brink family said in a statement provided to CNN. "They ask that if anyone has any information at all that will help the investigation, to please contact the proper authorities immediately. Clinton and Cristen died heroes, protecting their little girls and they deserve justice. They will forever live on in all of our hearts."
The couple recently moved to Prairie Grove from another state, police said. Prairie Grove Mayor David Faulk couldn't confirm much about the couple, but he did say the Brinks started their water service on July 16, 2025, just 10 days before the attack.
Hiland Dairy confirmed to the Associated Press that Clinton had transferred from its parent company, Prairie Farms Dairy. He was working at the South Dakota location before moving to Arkansas. The Associated Press reported that Clinton was scheduled to start his new job delivering milk in the Fayetteville area on July 28..
The manhunt for the suspect had been ongoing for five days, unsettling local residents and drawing widespread concern.
A call came into Washington County a little bit before 2:30 p.m., reporting a possible assault, according to police scanner audio obtained by 5NEWS.
"We found the victims down here," responders are heard saying in the audio. "They're on the lower Devil's Den trails where I've got two, two bodies."
5NEWS first received a tip about a large police presence and investigation at Devil's Den around 4:30 p.m. on July 26. We immediately reached out to law enforcement, including the Washington County Sheriff's Office and ASP, but were repeatedly redirected or offered no information.
While on the scene, 5NEWS reporter Beau Russell was told to leave by state troopers, and they too did not provide information on the reason for the law enforcement presence. At 8:40 p.m., six hours after being notified, ASP released a statement about a manhunt for the suspect.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — More details about the Bakersfield native couple killed on a hiking trail in Arkansas on Saturday as police continue to search for the suspect.
Clinton Brink, 43, attended Foothill High School, while across town, Cristen “Trent” Brink, 41, was a standout volleyball player at Liberty High School.
Trent, before married, became an All-American at California State University, San Bernardino. According to her former Head Coach, Kim Cherniss said she left behind a legacy for future Yotes to look up to.
“It's Trent, everyone knows,” said Coach Cherniss. “I've had so many alums who played either right before her or right after her reach out to me, and it would just because they know her, they know who she is, they know what she meant to the program.”
While Clinton was in the transition of transferring jobs, the human resources department for Hiland Dairy in Fayetteville, Arkansas, confirmed to Eyewitness News that he was an employee of the family industry, Prairie Farms in South Dakota, and applied to work in Fayetteville.
It's unknown at this time, but on July 21, after the family moved to Prairie Grove, Clinton turned down the offer at Hiland Dairy.
On July 26, just 30 minutes away from their new residence, the couple took their daughters hiking at Devil's Den State Park.
That's when Arkansas State Police say at about 2:40 p.m., they responded to a double homicide on the trail.
They said on Saturday, July 26, 2025, the couple was hiking with their two daughters, ages 7 and 9, at Devil’s Den State Park when they were attacked.
Northwest Arkansas Public Safety Channel's dispatch audio was released on Monday: "Be advised this just occurred at Devil's Den, units still en route attacked a male and a female on Devil's Den hiking trail and then took off in a small black sports car with tape over the plate."
When officers arrived, both Clinton and Cristen Brink were dead.
"There were cop cars all around there, and we were a little concerned, and we went up to the visitor center because we're trying to get some merch, some stickers, and they said that they couldn't say anything but that everything was closed for an emergency," said one Devil's Den Trail Hiker. "We then went over by it was a creek trail of some sort, and a park ranger said that they had an active scene, but she didn't say anything else."
Because it's an ongoing investigation, Arkansas State Police said details of the couple's attack are limited. They said the park is located in a remote and rural area, where the terrain is rugged, the vegetation is thick, and there is no cellphone service. Locals there could confirm the lack of cell signal.
"You feel guilty, really, for being here," said Devil's Den State Park visitor Christine Davis. "It's like you want to have fun, but you don't want to have fun because you know what's happened. You just never know. You never know. And I think the hardest part is not having cell service."
ASP issued a description of the suspect. Investigators now believe he was wearing a long-sleeved shirt with sleeves rolled up. The suspect is an unknown white man with a medium build. He was seen driving toward a park exit in a black, four-door sedan. The suspect’s vehicle may be a Mazda with a license plate covered by electrical or duct tape.
Shea Lewis, Secretary of the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism, issued a statement:
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred at Devil’s Den State Park. Our hearts are with the victims’ loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. The safety of our visitors and staff is our highest priority, and we are working closely with Arkansas State Police and various law enforcement officials as the investigation continues. We have increased law enforcement presence in our state parks. Our Park Rangers are fully commissioned law enforcement officers, and they are actively engaged in ensuring the safety and security of our park guests. We remain committed to supporting the ongoing investigation and to maintaining Arkansas State Parks as safe, welcoming places for all.”
Here in Bakersfield, the current Liberty High School principal, Leandra Slayton, coached Cristen Brink as they were part of the school’s first varsity volleyball team. She released a statement to Eyewitness News saying, “I am extremely sad to hear about Cristen. It is very difficult to process. She did play for me and was in the first graduating class. She still holds collegiate records in setting for the CCAA.”
As for Cristen Brink's alma mater, Cal State San Bernardino released a statement about their fellow student athlete: “We are devastated to learn of the passing of our women’s volleyball alumna Cristen (Trent) Brink. Cristen is one of the top setters in the storied history of our program, and still holds every assist record at our University. She was truly an iconic figure in our program who was loved by every single one of her teammates. Our program’s continued success over the past two decades since she graduated is a direct result of the legacy Cristen left. We send our deepest condolences to her friends and family during this unbearably difficult time.”
Her head coach, Kim Cherniss, said that she recently heard from Trent as the head coach was hoping to set up an alumni reunion. She cherishes her relationship she had with her.
“I know that she was really busy with her nursing career, and I was just so proud of her and everything that she was accomplishing,” said Coach Cherniss. “And as I look back now, of course, so that's precious to me, that we have a chance to connect a little bit, that I had some contact with her.”
A GoFundMe was made for the couple. It said, “Clinton and Cristen were loving parents to their three precious daughters. Devoted to one another, devoted to their girls, and devoted to God.”

A suspected gunman was arrested and two women transported to hospitals after a shooting at a Granada Hills day care on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
Paramedics responded to a residence where a day care is located, at 17320 W. Firma Court, around 12:30 p.m., according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Lyndsey Lantz. The two women were taken to a hospital in stable condition, and the LAFD worked with the day care and L.A. police to reunite children with their parents, she said.
LAPD Capt. Kathleen Burns said that the shooting appeared to have been a targeted attack potentially motivated by “some type of family violence or domestic violence.”
It was not yet clear whether the shooting took place in proximity to any children.
When L.A. Police Department officers arrived at the scene, they found one person suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, according to a department spokesperson. No information was available on the second patient’s wounds, the spokesperson said.
The suspected gunman fled the scene in a Tesla, and officers found the vehicle and arrested him without incident near Balboa Boulevard and Sherman Way — about seven miles from the scene of the shooting, police said.
The weapon believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered, Burns said.
The site of the shooting, Kids Dream Learning Center, is in a residential area of Granada Hills and offers programs for infants, toddlers and preschool-age children from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, according to its website. A representative for the center confirmed Wednesday that no children were harmed but did not wish to comment further on the incident.
Although the shooting took place on the day care’s property, it was not immediately known whether it took place indoors or outdoors and what degree of danger children might have been exposed to, Lantz said.

Two people were transported to the hospital after a shooting near the Kids Dream Learning Center in Granada Hills on Tuesday afternoon.
Los Angeles Fire Department officials said that the victims, both women, were in stable condition and that no children were injured during the incident.
Investigators said the shooting started just after 12:30 p.m. at a daycare in the 17300 block of W. Firma Court, according to Los Angeles police. By the time they arrived, the alleged shooter had already fled the scene in a grey Tesla.
The suspect, who has not yet been named, was later taken into custody near Sherman Way and Balboa Boulevard, according to the LAPD Captain Kathleen Burns. She said that investigators believe the gunman had a connection to the two women shot, but did not provide further details.
Police said that they also recovered a shotgun when they took the suspect into custody.
Burns said there were children at the daycare when the shooting happened, but that they were not in the same room. Investigators believe the suspect used a shotgun.
Worried parents rushed to the daycare after learning of the shooting, where police were waiting to make sure the families were safely reunited.
"I'm just happy I'm with my kids, and all the families are with their kids, that's the most important," said one father.
The situation that led up to the shooting is not immediately known and investigators are still working to determine a motive.
CBS News Los Angeles learned that one hour prior to the shooting, one of the victims got a restraining order against the suspect.
"Clearly he was agitated during the hearing, but ... I couldn't pick up any signs that he would do something like this," said Ashley Leung, an attorney for one of the victims. "It's a very extreme reaction."
Leung said that a temporary restraining order was previously requested but denied by a judge.
"It's my belief that potentially had that one been granted, that maybe they would've been removed from his possession by this point," she said.

STARKE, Fla. (WKRC) - A mother allegedly shot the father of her children to death while the patriarch was picking the children up from daycare.
According to an arrest report obtained by Law&Crime, officers arrived to Auntie Lili's Daycare on Friday to respond to a report of a shooting and an armed woman. Upon arriving, first responders found the victim, Christopher Jones, in the doorway of the daycare "bleeding profusely from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds," per the document.
Authorities reviewed the daycare's security cameras and learned that the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Mindy Osteen, approached Jones' vehicle shortly after he placed the children and their belongings into the car, per the document. Osteen reportedly followed Jones as he sat down in the driver's seat and reached into her backpack.
"Mindy walks directly up to Christopher and fires 3 shots as she backs up slightly," the document read. "She then walks back up to Christopher and fires 2 more shots."
Osteen allegedly fired an additional time at Jones as he attempted to run away. Jones ran into the daycare and attempted to take cover, but became stuck behind a doorway, at which point Osteen fired three more bullets at him. The children were allegedly screaming from inside Jones' vehicle, having seen the entire ordeal unfold.
"Please let the monster die," Osteen reportedly said. "You got to die Chris..."
Osteen allegedly walked around the property and looked through Jones' car, and was doing so when deputies arrived. Jones reportedly told deputies that Osteen had shot him, and she approached authorities without question.
"I'm right here y'all, I done it in self defense," she allegedly said.
Jones was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Mindy was charged with premeditated first degree murder, two counts of aggravated child abuse, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and grand theft of a firearm.

BIBB COUNTY, AL (WBMA) — Authorities have arrested three additional suspects in connection with a disturbing child abuse case involving an underground bunker, bringing the total number of arrests to seven.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Bibb County Sheriff Jody Wade identified the newly arrested individuals as Rebecca Brewer, Ricky Terrell, and Sarah Louis Terrell. Sheriff Wade detailed the charges against each suspect, noting that charges are still pending for Brewer, Ricky Terrell, and Sarah Louis Terrell.
William Chase McElroy is charged with four counts of first-degree rape, six counts of first-degree sodomy, six counts of human trafficking, and four counts of first-degree human trafficking. Dalton Terrell faces five counts of first-degree rape, seven counts of first-degree sodomy, six counts of human trafficking, and four counts of first-degree kidnapping. Andres Trejo-Velazquez is charged with six counts of human trafficking. Timothy St. John was taken into custody on Tuesday, facing multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree rape, four counts of sodomy, four counts of human trafficking, three counts of kidnapping, one count of bestiality, and one count of cruelty to animals.
Brewer faces eight counts of human trafficking, eight counts of first-degree human kidnapping, and three counts of sexual torture. Ricky Terrell is charged with one count of rape, with additional charges pending. Sarah Louis Terrell is charged with one count of sexual torture and two counts of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old.
Victims in the case range from ages 3 to 15, with some of the offenders being parents of the victims, authorities said. Sheriff Wade also revealed that one of the suspects has ties to a gang known for profiting from child sex crimes.
Investigators have reason to believe this all began in 2022.
William McElroy is accused of acknowledging inappropriate conduct with a child, while Dalton Terrell reportedly admitted to unlawful sexual activity during an interview with investigators. Andres Velazquez-Trejo is accused of distributing explicit images and facilitating contact between victims and others.
Velazquez-Trejo's status as a U.S. citizen is currently under investigation.
The bunker that the children were housed in reportedly was a underground storm shelter "was built for a good thing [protecting life], and used for a horrible thing", Sheriff Wade told reporters. The offenders would allegedly arrange and pay for what was described as "appointments" to abuse the children in the underground bunker on Aaron Drive.
Authorities continue to investigate this case and we will continue to provide updates as they become available.
