USA: Liberal Publication Daily Beast Writes - SERIOUSLY? Matt Damon, Tic Tacs, And Kanye West: ‘Saturday Night Live’ Is As Problematic As Ever. Plus, My Take On This Circus And Tweet Exchanges.


IN HIS OWN WORDS: On December 2017 Matt Damon said, "Ten years ago if you made a claim about me and I had a big movie coming out, okay, I had a $100 million dollar movie coming out, or I have a movie that is personally important to me coming out, close to the release of that film you say that Matt Damon grabbed my butt and stuff his tongue down my throat. We would then go to mediation and organize a settlement. I don't' want this out there you know. Now, with the internet, and you know, not with the internet it wasn't there ten years ago, but with social media, these stories get, it's like they get gasoline poured on them. So the moment a claim is made, if you made that same claim today to me, I would, I would, I'd be scorched earth, I'd go I don't care if it cost me $10 million to fight this in court with you for 10 years. You're not taking my name from me. You're not taking my name and my reputation from me. I worked too hard. I worked too hard for it and I earned it and you can't just blow me up like that."

Kavanaugh graduated from Yale College in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts cum laude in American history. He graduated with a Juris Doctor in 1990 from Yale Law School. Brett Kavanaugh is an American attorney and jurist who serves as a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since 2006. Brett Kavanaugh is not a pretend college graduate. Brett Kavanaugh is not a pretend U.S. Circuit Judge. He's a real judge with real experience  AND REAL RESPONSIBILITY making decisions based on what is right UNDER THE LAW.

The Marxist Democrats sat on one of Kavanaugh's accuser's confidential letter she sent to Senator Feinstein on July 30, 2018. Kavanaugh's original confirmation hearings ended on September 7, 2018. The Senate Judiciary Committee scheduled the confirmation vote for September 20, 2018. Ford's very PRIVATE CONFIDENTIAL letter to Senator Feinstein was strategically leaked to the media on September 17, 2018 right before the vote. Then the whole circus started with outrageous false accusations with 90% of the media working in concert with the Marxist Democrat party to destroy Brett Kavanaugh's life WITHOUT OFFERING ANY EVIDENCE whatsoever. All of you have convicted this man without due process. This case wouldn't get passed any Grand Jury in the United States. What are the odds that all of his accusers ARE ONLY Marxist Democrat women. I was elated to find out that all false accusations will be held criminally liable. Could even face prison time, as they should.

Civil liberties are simply defined as INDIVIDUAL legal and constitutional protections from entities more powerful than an individual, for example, parts of the government, other individuals, or corporations. Casting Matt Damon, who has insinuated the #MeToo movement has gone too far, as Brett Kavanaugh. Joking about swapping birth control with Tic Tacs. Kanye does MAGA. Not great, SNL.

On social media leading up to Saturday’s season premiere of Saturday Night Live—and we’ll admit one’s timeline can be an echo chamber—we noticed an expressed uneasiness over the inevitability that the episode would tackle the Senate testimonies of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Brett Kavanaugh surrounding her allegation of sexual assault.

Their testimonies became a news event that captivated the nation, during which politicians’ egos were exposed, one privileged man’s behavior barreled through the standard for histrionics and hysterics, and a kangaroo court juggled the future of our country like a hot potato. Of course Saturday Night Live would tackle the hearings. It’s what the show does.

But this is new territory for the country and our culture’s discourse. A conversation about sexual assault is taking place on a wider national level than ever, exposing raw nerves on all sides. Watching Dr. Ford deliver her testimony was a watershed moment, but also a painful and traumatizing one for those forced to relive their own experiences through watching her share hers—and then see it be so cavalierly dismissed by some of the most powerful people in politics.

This was a time for rage, sure. But maybe not a time for satire.

SNL’s handling of the hearings this weekend earned mixed reviews. Making headlines from the starting gun, the show cast Matt Damon as Kavanaugh. The Daily Beast’s own headline proclaimed that “Matt Damon Absolutely Nails Brett Kavanaugh in Season Premiere.”

“Damon, sporting just a hint of gin blossoms and a mobile, sniffing rage-mask as Kavanaugh, brought the appropriate frat boy ire to the sketch’s version of the judge,” The A.V. Club said in its review. “More importantly, though, Saturday Night Live’s contentment to pick the easiest jokes on any subject is especially ill-suited to what, for a whole lot of people, was one of the most illuminating and wrenching events in recent memory.” In the end, the reviewer called the approach “dismayingly pedestrian, settling for impersonation, exaggeration, and stunt casting.”

But regardless of how the performance was received, it’s almost unbelievable that Damon was cast in the first place. It’s one of a series of gripes with an episode that proved the show either inelegant or incapable of dealing with issues surrounding sexual assault with nuance, hindered by its own reckless pursuit of headlines over responsibility.

Late last year after the Harvey Weinstein investigations launched the beginnings of the #MeToo movement, Damon found himself at the center of controversy for decrying the “culture of outrage” and arguing that allegations of sexual misconduct should be analyzed on a “spectrum.”

“You know, there’s a difference between, you know, patting someone on the butt and rape or child molestation,” he said.

Following that controversy, Damon gave another interview in which he said we’re not paying enough attention to the men who don’t commit acts of sexual misconduct—a seriously?!? if there ever was one. In an apology for his insensitive remarks, Damon said that he learned that he “should get in the backseat and close my mouth for a while” while women’s voices are heard.

We wouldn’t necessarily call playing an accused sexual abuser in the premiere of SNL sitting in the backseat.

Perhaps Damon and SNL thought that having him play Kavanaugh in a sketch meant to expose the judge as a hypocrite and a liar puts the actor on some path to atonement for his previous remarks on the issue. Or perhaps they both thought it too innocuous to consider.

But these things matter. Even celebrity casting on a sketch comedy series matters. If we are to judge this on a spectrum, casting a man who once insinuated that the #MeToo movement has gone too far as Brett Kavanaugh falls somewhere between tone-deaf and triggering at a time when women who come forward continue to be dismissed, vilified, mocked, targeted, and not believed.

In many ways, the show was in a no-win position with how to handle the news.

It’s easily valid to criticize the show for casting one of the biggest stars in Hollywood as Kavanaugh in a sketch about the hearings while not featuring Dr. Ford at all. At the same time, thank god the show did not attempt to turn Dr. Ford’s brave testimony into satire. And yet, there’s an uncomfortable dissonance in the level of attention given to the different sides of the story when an A-list celebrity brings headlines to one party, while the other isn’t given a voice at all—even if the sketch, as a whole, is meant to mock the former. (Like we said, no-win.)

But maybe it would be easier to excuse the problematic casting as an oversight, or as us being too sensitive and trigger-happy with complaints, had the show not also featured a “Weekend Update” bit in which Pete Davidson and Colin Jost giddily laugh over a joke Davidson cracks about switching fiancé Ariana Grande’s birth control out with tic tacs, in order to “keep her.”

We get it. It’s a joke. But also, it’s an uncomfortable, lazy, antiquated one. It’s also a joke about reproductive coercion, which is a form of domestic violence. Maybe now, given the important conversations regarding sexism and abuse going on in the country, is not the time to make that joke. Or, hey, perhaps it never is.

The whole episode culminated with Kanye West performing over the credits in a MAGA hat, and then apparently delivering a pro-Trump rant after the show’s credits finished rolling. Obviously Kanye is going to be Kanye and no one has control over that. But you do have control over whether to book Kanye West for your massively popular TV show.

SNL boss Lorne Michaels has said West was a last-minute replacement for Ariana Grande after the singer withdrew from her slot as the musical guest, leaving bookers in a bind. But you know who else would probably have made themselves available for the kind of showcase SNL gives musical acts? Literally almost anybody in show business. You can’t control what Kanye West does, but you know what you’re getting when you’re booking him. So maybe don’t.

Again, this is a time for rage, and that can certainly happen through laughter. We need shows like SNL to get us through times like these. But anger was largely missing from Saturday night’s show, which instead played like a shrugged business-as-usual when it comes to staging political sketches when, in fact, there’s nothing usual about what we’re going through.

There has been great, cathartic late-night comedy that has dealt with these hearings, for example Samantha Bee’s entire Full Frontal episode that aired the day before Dr. Ford and Kavanaugh appeared before the Senate committee. (Would you guess after watching Saturday night’s episode that all three of SNL’s head writers are male, and only 5 of its 28 writers are women?)

It’s not just comedy, to be scoffed at or dismissed when it doesn’t get it right. The President of the United States cares deeply enough about the show to tweet about it. But more than that, it’s a reflection of larger cultural attitudes and, in some cases, ignorance about issues that affect and define us.

Netflix is still hungry for a major franchise. Over the last few years, the streaming service has made strong attempts at cracking the blockbuster industry by putting out films like Bright and The Cloverfield Paradox, both of which had big names (Will Smith! J.J. Abrams!) and real serial potential. Both films failed with critics, however, and never managed to capture the wider audience zeitgeist. (Although Bright is getting a sequel anyway.) This means Netflix has kept searching for a series it can latch onto and turn into a never-ending stream of global hits—but the company may have just found the answer to its prayers. According to Variety, the streamer has secured the rights to The Chronicles of Narnia, the best-selling, beloved seven-book series by C.S. Lewis.

As part of a new multi-year deal between Netflix and the C.S. Lewis company, Netflix is going to to spin his fantasy works into multiple films and series. Further details for how the service will break down the books have not yet been revealed.

“C.S. Lewis’s beloved Chronicles of Narnia stories have resonated with generations of readers around the world,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer of Netflix, per Variety. “Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.”

The series is a terrific boon to Netflix, an opportunity to gobble up some of Lewis’s immense pre-existing fandom and create a film franchise with serious legs. Though we’ll never know what’s really a hit at the secretive, ratings-hoarding platform, Narnia could be one of its biggest projects yet, capturing viewer attention in the way Bright and The Cloverfield Paradox failed to. It’s certainly the biggest property that Netflix has gotten its hands on thus far, and will help the streamer pose a direct threat to networks like Showtime—which is teaming up with Lin-Manuel Miranda for a Kingkiller Chronicles adaptation—and platforms like Amazon, which announced last November that it was turning The Lord of the Rings into a series.

Call it the Game of Thrones scramble. As HBO’s giant fantasy series comes to a close next year, other networks and streamers are racing to produce the next big serialized epic. While Amazon and Netflix might not put out their biggies in time to close that window (Thrones will likely end in spring 2019), they’re planting the seeds for the greater franchise war to come.

Nabbing Narnia also gives Netflix a chance to release a proper sci-fi/fantasy blockbuster—one genre in which the company has not yet planted a major flag. (The series Stranger Things, however, has certainly cornered that market in the TV space.) The Disney-backed film adaptations of the first three Narnia books—The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and Voyage of the Dawn Treader—were all international hits, grossing over $1 billion at the worldwide box office between them. And it’s been eight years since the last one, which died on the vine in the domestic market—so the time is ripe for a fresh approach. One thing is certain, though: if Netflix is going to do Narnia right, they’re going to spend a lot of money. But it’s not like Sarandos and co. have ever had a problem with that before.

USA: Texas Police Report: Democrat (Marxist) Socialist Senate Candidate Beto O’Rourke Tried to Flee Scene of Drunk-Driving Crash, He Also Has A Shady Past Of Corruption And Cronyism.

It has long been a matter of public record that Beto O’Rourke was arrested for driving while intoxicated in 1998, but a police report recently obtained by the Houston Chronicle reveals that the Democratic Senate candidate crashed and tried to flee the scene before his arrest.

O’Rourke, then 26, was driving at “a high rate of speed” on a Texas highway roughly ten miles from the New Mexico border when he crashed into a truck and spun across the median into oncoming traffic. A witness whom O’Rourke passed shortly before crashing later told police he personally prevented O’Rourke from fleeing the scene. The unnamed witness “turned on his overhead lights to warn oncoming traffic and to try to get the defendant [O’Rourke] to stop,” according to the report.

The rising progressive star, who blew a 0.136 and a 0.134 on police breathalyzers, did not address the witness report that he tried to flee the scene in a statement released on Thursday.

“I drove drunk and was arrested for a DWI in 1998,” O’Rourke said. “As I’ve publicly discussed over the last 20 years, I made a serious mistake for which there is no excuse.”

Republican senator Ted Cruz of Texas, who is engaged in a tight race with O’Rourke, has not commented on the newly revealed details of his opponent’s arrest.

O’Rourke, the son of an El Paso County judge, was charged with driving while intoxicated following the incident but completed a court-ordered diversion program to ensure that the charges would be dismissed.

The DWI arrest was not O’Rourke’s only youthful run-in with law enforcement: He was also arrested for trespassing after hopping a fence at a University of Texas at El Paso facility.

The Texas congressman and Senate hopeful has cited his past wrongdoings in justifying his support for criminal-justice reform.

“Those mistakes did not ultimately define me or stop me from what I wanted to do in my life or how I wanted to contribute to the success of my family and my community,” O’Rourke wrote in an op-ed for the Chronicle published on Monday.

Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke's 1998 arrest for drunk driving has been public knowledge for years, but a newly-revealed police report has brought to light even more allegations of disturbing details from the arrest.

The Houston Chronicle reported on Friday that newly-obtained police reports alleged "two elements of the incident that have been overlooked: that there was a crash involved, and that O’Rourke allegedly attempted to flee."

A reporter who witnessed the crash said that he observed O'Rourke traveling at a "high rate of speed" in a 75-mph zone as O’Rourke then "lost control of the vehicle and struck a truck."

O'Rourke then reportedly attempted to flee the scene of the crash after hitting someone, but the reporter was there to stop him from getting away.

The Texas Department of Public Safety report "described O’Rourke as having 'glossy' eyes, slurred speech, smelling of liquor, and almost falling to the ground as he got out of his car," the Chronicle added.

O’Rourke tried to claim that he had only consumed two beers and had taken "cold medication" while he was taking a friend home, but the police report does not mention that any passengers were with him in the vehicle. According to The Washington Free Beacon, "O'Rourke was tested on two police breathalyzers, blowing a .136 and .134. The state's legal limit at the time was .10; it has since been reduced to .08."

O’Rourke, who has long tried to characterize his criminal behavior as "youthful indiscretions," was 26 years old at the time he was arrested for drunk driving and was 22 years old when he was arrested in 1995 on burglary charges.

In an op-ed on Monday, O’Rourke tried to downplay his criminal record by claiming that his actions do not "define" him.

If you search online for articles that are critical of Texas Democratic candidate for Senate, Beto O’Rourke, then you’re going to have a relatively tough time. They’re few and far between, with a few of them populating this site in particular.

What you will find, however, are a load of puff pieces about Ted Cruz’s challenger. You’ll be inundated with stories about how well his fundraising is going, and about how he’s biting at Cruz’s heels in the polls. You’ll see stories about his quest to inject ethics and stand against corruption! He wants equality! You’ll even see YouTube videos of him playing on stage with Willie Nelson!

It’s almost like O’Rourke is just the perfect candidate. He’s not Ted Cruz! He said he’d impeach Trump!

Most interestingly, O’Rourke said he wants to tackle corruption. With the media narrative making him seem pure as the driven snow — except for all the cool rebellious stuff he did when he was younger — it’s easy for O’Rourke to make himself look like a bigger man than Cruz, and by extension, Trump.

The problem here is that all those media outlets that are so busy praising him are not reporting O’Rourke’s corrupt past. He’s had multiple shady dealings during his time in El Paso’s city council, including an odd set of payments to city representative Suzie Byrd’s company Moxie Communications and Consulting, according to Deep Inside El Paso:
For 2015, Open Secrets lists the top expenditure to vendors / recipients, and of those top expenditures, there is an amount for $21,000 divided in to 12 payments, and a seperate amount for $10,500 divided into six payments, for a total of $31,500. The payments are made to Moxie Communications and Consulting, which is owned by Byrd.
This is odd, seeing as how O’Rourke already had a communications director for his primary campaign, and he didn’t really have any challengers for his seat:
The curious thing is why the Congressman needs to pay Byrd so much money when he already had a “Communications Director.” According to The Sunlight Foundation, “John Meza” is listed in this position.

It could be that Byrd is used in his re-election bid, however, O’Rourke had no serious opponent in the last election cycle. In a straight-ticket Democratic-voting district, why would Byrd need to be paid so much money?
This gets stranger when you hear that O’Rourke’s past involves paying his own company money from political contributions to the tune of over $40,000 between 2014 and 2015.

According to Heavy, O’Rourke is a very wealthy man due to multiple investments:
InsideGov.com estimates his net worth at $9.5 million as of 2014. O’Rourke’s net worth is about 8.9 times more than the average member of Congress, and 11 times more than the average Representative.
Which is all well and good, but O’Rourke’s money dealings in the past involved backroom deals and ethics violations that even had members of his own party turning against him.

According to Ken Webster at KPRC, Soon after he was elected to El Paso city council, O’Rourke embraced the practice of eminent domain, which is essentially the legalized theft of private property on behalf of the government. O’Rourke displaced El Pasoans from their homes in order to invest in a revitalization project for El Paso around the early 2000’s. It appeared that the newly minted City Councilman was seizing private land, then handing it over to developers for a cut of the cash. This resulted in Carmen Felix, a Democrat in El Paso, attempting to lead a recall on O’Rourke to get the corruption out.

When confronted with a petition for his recall, O’Rourke seemed to change his tune about his love of eminent domain, but as Webster describes, this was all lip service. O’Rourke was soon at it again:
In September of 2006 a group called the Land Grab Opponents of El Paso filed an ethics complaint against O’Rourke and the Paso del Norte Group, a company who was working with Beto on the development project. The projected reeked of corruption. It was revealed that O’Rourke’s own company, Stanton Street Technology Group, was providing services to the Paso del Norte Group [where O’Rourke’s father-in-law just so happened to hold a high ranking position]. His father-in-law, his own company and his political allies were all benefiting from this deal. In case you’re not catching what I’m putting down here, that’s a textbook case of cronyism wrapped up in a nepotism sandwich. Beto allegedly used his political influence as an elected official to try to cut a profit for his own company and another company headed by his wife’s father. The people of El Paso didn’t like this news and neither should you if you’re considering the possibility of Beto being the new Junior Senator for Texas.

O’Rourke’s political career kicked off with so much shadiness and obvious corruption that it’s a wonder of the world that this hasn’t been brought up by any of the news outlets. If O’Rourke is such a huge fan of statist seizure, and has a willingness to screw over Texans in order to make himself wealthy, then alarms should be going off left and right.

Yet they’re not.

At this time, we only have O’Rourke’s sunny disposition and a penchant for spouting leftist talking points in an eloquent manner.

Instead, making the rounds right now is a video from the clown show known as “Now This” which features O’Rourke going on a long-winded explanation about how kneeling during the anthem isn’t disrespectful, and he can’t think of anything more American. As a side note, I find it odd that O’Rourke’s crowd doesn’t cheer for our troops, but continuously cheers for the NFL kneelers.

We can both agree that players have every right to kneel during the anthem if they want, but I’d say we need to have a serious chat about the validity of millionaires drawing attention to problems that we already are all well aware of and how these protests could be done in a far less disrespectful manner. It bothers me that O’Rourke thinks that just because the kneeling is peaceful, it’s good.

If your father helped me all throughout my life and at one point in time died to protect me, you’d expect me to have a very high regard for him. Yet, at his funeral, when everyone is asked to bow their heads in a moment of silence for him I stand, turn my back on him, then proceed to talk about his faults during a Facebook Live session. You wouldn’t say “well, these are important issues he’s raising.” Rightfully, you’d be disgusted with my behavior and character. You’d denounce me, highlight my ungratefulness, and hope to never see me again. What I did was peaceful, but it wasn’t good. This is the kind of thing O’Rourke thinks is okay, though.

You might not like Ted Cruz or agree with his social stances. I find myself disagreeing with a few myself. Thing is, Cruz at least has a track record of leaving things up to states, instead of tossing things into the federal level, and more or less leaving you alone to live your life as you see fit so long as it doesn’t harm anyone else. O’Rourke, however, has taken stances in favor of unnecessary gun control and utilizing your tax dollars for elective medical procedures with no limitations on things like abortion. His immigration stances aren’t at all thought out but sound good when waxing sentimental.

Cruz would rather you be left alone, O’Rourke falls into the old progressive trap of wanting to fix society through government intervention, which has a long history of failure.

We’d all do well to stay away from O’Rourke and let this media created candidate go the way of Wendy Davis.

Budding Democrat-socialist superstar Julia Salazar has repeatedly lied about being Jewish and an immigrant from Colombia, various reports allege.

The 27-year-old Salazar, who is campaigning for a State Senate seat in New York and is seen as the next Democrat “It Girl,” the next Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has repeatedly told voters two thing about her identity that are not true — that she is Jewish and that she is a Colombian immigrant.

“I am a Jew of color. I am a Colombian, American, but I am also Jewish… I immigrated to this country with my family when I was very little from Colombia,” Salazar said at one campaign event.

Believing her, New York Magazine described her as a “naturalized U.S. citizen.”

The Intercept ran a glowing piece about her, but were then forced to issue an embarrassing correction after Salazar misled the left-wing publication about her background:
An earlier version of this piece referred to Julia Salazar as a Colombian immigrant, based on claims she made to The Intercept and elsewhere. She refers to herself as a “proud immigrant” on her campaign website. The story has been updated to remove that reference, and to make clear that while Salazar said she emigrated from Colombia, she was in fact born in Miami.
Salazar has been telling voters, the media, and anyone who reads her campaign site that she is a proud immigrant — when the truth is that she was born in Miami.

After being challenged on this, Salazar kind of doubled down. While she stopped referring to herself as an “immigrant” on her campaign site, she replaced it with something else that is untrue, referring to herself as the “daughter of working-class immigrants” when her mother was born in the United States.

Although she apparently converted to Judaism two years ago, initially Salazar’s claim to be Jewish came from statements about her father being Jewish — which also is not true.

According to Salazar’s own family, who found it necessary to correct the record, “There was nobody in our immediate family who was Jewish … my father was not Jewish, we were not raised Jewish,” her brother told Tablet.

On top of that, her uncle was a Jesuit priest and her mother attends an evangelical church.

Salazar alluded to a Jewish upbringing in a September 2014 comment on Mondoweiss: “Like most American Jews, I was raised with the delusion that Israel was a safe haven for me, perhaps even the only safe place for Jews.” Whatever the source or nature of her Jewish identity, Salazar was presenting herself as a vocal left-winger of Jewish persuasion by early 2014. Her Jewish identity was used as an argument-ender on Twitter: “Is it anti-Semitic for a non-Jewish student to publicly impose opinion of whose voice is permitted in our Jewish communities?” Salazar sniped in the midst of a lengthy February 2014 Twitter exchange with the non-Jewish pro-Israel writer and activist Chloe Valdary (a Tablet contributor). “Please leave my Jewish community alone,” Salazar continued. “You don’t speak for us.”
Those tweets are now deleted.

Rather than compare Salazar to Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) might be more accurate. Warren too lied about her identity. For decades she falsely claimed to be an American Indian as a means to further her own education, career, and political goals.

A Democratic socialist candidate running for state Senate in New York is being challenged by her mother and her brother over details she shared publicly about her upbringing.
Julia Salazar, a left-wing Democrat aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America, told several outlets she was an immigrant from Colombia raised by a working-class family, but her mother and her brother are disputing those claims.

“My family immigrated to the U.S. from Colombia when I was a baby, and my mom ended up raising my brother and me as a single mom, without a college degree and from a working-class background,” Julia told Jacobin Magazine.

Her brother, Alex Salazar, told the media a different story. Alex Salazar told City & State New York the family had lived comfortably in a big house in Florida and their father set aside $6,000 in college funds for each child.

“We were very much middle class. We had a house in Jupiter along the river, it was in a beautiful neighborhood,” Alex Salazar told the online outlet. “I feel very strongly about my family and I want to tell the truth.”

Alex Salazar also disputed her status as a Colombian immigrant, saying that while the family traveled to Colombia a few times to visit family, the entire family had been raised in Florida. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency confirmed that Julia had been born in Miami.

Christine Salazar, Julia’s mother, also pushed back on some of the claims her daughter made on the campaign trail. Julia claimed that she was “raised by a single mom who didn’t have a college degree.,” but City & State noted that her mother graduated college when Julia was eight years old.

The outlet added that her parents separated when she was six years old, and there were only two years she just lived with her mother before her mother graduated from college.

Christine said that while the family had been stretched thin financially at times, she disputed her daughter’s claim that she took a job at a grocery store in high school “to make ends meet.”

“My kids always worked, from the time they were 14. I encouraged that because I thought there was a lot of value in that in terms of learning and responsibility so that was the purpose behind them having part-time jobs. … not the light bill,” she said.

Alex Salazar also denied that his sister—who has publicly come out against the Jewish state and pledged her support for boycott, disinvestment, and sanctions against Israel—came from a Jewish background.

“There was nobody in our immediate family who was Jewish … we were not raised Jewish,” he told Tablet Magazine.

Critics have also questioned Salazar over her progressive credentials after Tablet Magazine revealed she was a conservative Christian activist in college for Christians United for Israel (CUFI) and supported pro-Israel and pro-life causes.

Julia’s opponent, meanwhile, seized the opportunity to point out the inconsistencies in his opponent’s story.

“Julia Salazar was a Florida Republican until she parachuted into Bushwick last year to run,” Dilan’s campaign spokesman Bob Liff said. “Voters don’t judge candidates on whether they are immigrants — or even any of the other misrepresentations and outright lies she has claimed as part of her background — but they do care about the truth.”

The 27-year-old Democratic socialist is running to oust incumbent eight-term state Sen. Martin Dilan in the state’s Democratic primary on September 13.

A good government group has withdrawn its backing of Julia Salazar for state Senate, saying the candidate provided information about her academic credentials that proved to be incorrect.

Citizens Union had previously issued its “preference” — the term the group uses rather than endorsement — for Salazar, whose campaign has been plagued in recent weeks by revelations about misrepresentations of her past religious and political beliefs and her immigration status.

“Citizens Union is hereby rescinding the preference it expressed for Julia Salazar in the Democratic Primary for New York State Senate District 18,” Randy Mastro, the chair of the group, said in a statement. “Salazar recently admitted that the information she originally provided to Citizens Union about her academic credentials was not correct, so Citizens Union has decided to express no preference in this race.”

A campaign spokesman called it an “error in her endorsement application.”

"Julia regrets that an error in her endorsement application led to Citizens Union rescinding its endorsement, but remains committed to working with Citizens Union and others opposed to Albany corruption if elected to take money out of politics and clean up Albany,” he said.

Salazar’s campaign materials had implied she graduated from Columbia University, but when questioned by the New York Times, she said she had completed her coursework but never graduated.

During her time at Columbia, Salazar — now running as a progressive Democrat of Jewish faith who supports abortion rights and the people of Palestine — was a Christian right-to-life activist who supported Israel. While she had campaigned as a Colombian immigrant, she was born in the United States to an American mother and Colombian father. Her statements about a working class upbringing have also been called into question by statements from her brother and mother who said the family did not struggle financially.

In fact, the family owned a home next door to Mets legend Keith Hernandez — and Salazar was embroiled in a bizarre legal battle with the ballplayer and his ex-wife that included a claim of an affair, which Salazar has denied, and a libel lawsuit involving accusations of drug use, bank theft and pilfered Pottery Barn vouchers.

Republicans blast candidate over the proposal as he points out neighboring states’ rates

TALLAHASSEE — A tax Republican Gov. Rick Scott once campaigned on eliminating has emerged as a big dollar, central clash between the candidates fighting to succeed him.

In a move setting him apart from usually tax-averse Florida candidates, Democrat Andrew Gillum has called for a stunning 40 percent increase in Florida’s corporate income tax — which he wants to use to raise $1 billion more for education, including $50,000 minimum starting salaries for teachers.

The Republican Governors Association has seized on the idea, ridiculing it in a new TV spot as a “disaster for the economy.” Florida’s biggest business groups also have begun sharpening their attacks.

“National headquarters of companies in this state are focused on this like a laser beam,” said Tom Feeney, a former Republican Florida House speaker and president of Associated Industries of Florida, whose members include some of the state’s biggest companies.
