BERLIN, N.H. — A memorial was growing Monday at a Berlin restaurant where two people died in an apparent murder-suicide over the weekend.

People visited La Casita on Monday and left flowers, balloons, stuffed animals and candles at the small restaurant.

Investigators with the attorney general's office said Marisol Fuentes, 25, was working behind the bar just after 9:45 a.m. Sunday when her estranged partner, Michael Gleason, 50, walked in and shot her before turning the gun on himself. He was found dead in a bathroom at the restaurant.

According to court documents, Fuentes filed a criminal complaint in April accusing Gleason of sexual assault and stealing thousands of dollars she was saving to start a business. He was later charged with aggravated felonious sexual assault, kidnapping and theft and was out on bail pending next steps in his case.

"She's just so young to be taken away so violently," said Mayor Robert Cone.

An autopsy confirmed that Fuentes died from gunshot wounds.

"Marisol was a very special person," Cone said. "She was a bright light to the community. Everyone that she met, they just immediately fell in love with her."

Fuentes was known for bringing people together and launched a hot meals program at her church, Good Shepherd Parish.

"It was all about her desire to help form the community, be a part of the community and strengthen our community life here in the city of Berlin," said the Rev. Kyle Stanton.

Officials with the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence said there is help available for anyone who is affected by abuse.

"If anyone finds themselves in a situation where they fear that their safety is at risk, call a crisis center 24 hours a day. We are here to help. No one should be alone in this situation," said Lyn Shollett, of the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. "Again, the facts are still unfolding, but when someone dies at the hands of a loved one, clearly there is a systems failure here, and we want to be part of creating that solution."

Anyone who needs help can call the New Hampshire Helpline 24 hours a day, seven days a week at (866) 644-3574.

Those who knew Fuentes said they will never forget the hope she brought to Berlin.

"I just want her to be remembered for the shining light that she was and what she brought to the community," Cone said.

The restaurant is closed until further notice.
