COLUMBUS, Ohio — The body of 13-year-old Kei'Mani Latigue was discovered inside an abandoned home in Toledo on Monday after being reported missing last week.
Kei'Mani was last seen alive at her north Toledo home in the early hours of March 18, 10TV’s sister station WTOL 11 reported.
Kei’Mani was then reported missing, and police later found her deceased in a dilapidated east Toledo home on Miami Street, according to a release sent by the Toledo Police Department.
A press release Monday night from the Toledo Police Department says she was "found suffering from apparent fatal injuries." The Lucas County Coroner's Office on Tuesday ruled her death a homicide caused by multiple incised wounds of the neck, WTOL reported.
Who was Kei’Mani?
A Toledo Public Schools spokesperson told WTOL on Tuesday morning that Kei'Mani was a seventh-grade student at Spring Elementary School, a K-8 school in the TPS district.
She was on the honor roll and loved to play basketball with her friends.
According to district leaders for Toledo Public Schools, Kei'Mani struggled to find a school that worked for her. She was in and out of six different area schools and often struggled with behavioral issues. But they say she found a home at Spring Elementary.
Kei'Mani was set to win a kindness award at school later this week, WTOL reported.
Who is Darnell Jones?
Kei’Mani’s father, 33-year-old Darnell Jones, was taken into custody and charged with felonious assault in Columbus in connection to a shooting with a SWAT officer Tuesday morning, according to the Columbus Division of Police.
Jones, who also uses the surname Ogletree, faces warrants for murder and third-degree felony abduction of Kei'Mani, according to the Toledo Municipal Court.
The warrant for Jones' arrest alleges he removed Kei'Mani from her home without the consent of her guardian. Jones allegedly gave officers "inconsistent statements about his activity with the victim" as well as their whereabouts.
Jones was also the last person to be seen with Kei'Mani prior to her disappearance, the warrant said.
He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at 9 a.m. for his role in the shooting.
What happens now?
The home where Kei'Mani’s body was found on Monday will be demolished, according to Toledo police.
Toledo community members attended a vigil on Tuesday night near the home where Kei'Mani was found. Per the Facebook event page, the event invites the community to "pray, sing or honor the life" of Kei'Mani.
A Toledo funeral home is accepting donations for the funeral services for Kei'Mani. Her aunt, Saneika Williams, confirmed to WTOL 11 on Tuesday that the funeral services were not fully covered.
Those who wish to donate money can give to the Brown Legacy Memorial at this link. A post on the webpage also asks the public to spread the word that it is collecting donations and pray for Kei'Mani's family.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — A Toledo murder suspect is facing new charges in Columbus after an officer-involved shooting in the city's Victorian Village neighborhood Tuesday morning.
Police say Darnell Jones, 33, was spotted by Columbus Police SWAT officers at Dennison and Second avenues around 10 a.m. Once confronted, police say Jones -- who also goes by Darnell Ogletree -- fired at a CPD sergeant. Court documents stated officers returned fire, striking Jones. He was taken to an area hospital and was said to be stable. None of the officers at the scene was injured.
Ogletree also has been charged with felonious assault.
According to court documents from Toledo Municipal Court, Jones has been charged with three separate felonies, including abduction, felonious assault, and murder. The case started last weekend when Jones' daughter disappeared. ABC 6 affiliate station WTVG in Toledo reported that Keimani Latigue, 13, was last seen on March 16. She lived with her grandmother and was home alone.
Jones told a WTVG reporter in Toledo last week, “I came over here because she said that it seemed like somebody was trying to break into the house. Me and my cousin sat over here for an hour, and we left around 12:30ish.”
Toledo police stated Jones was the last one to see his daughter before her body was discovered Monday in a burned-out house in the city. Police indicated Jones continued to change his story when it came to activities with his daughter and her whereabouts.
Police say officers conducted surveillance on Jones after he was first charged on Sunday. Columbus police were alerted that a "dangerous suspect" was in the city, which led to Tuesday's arrest.
Jones is scheduled to appear in Franklin County Municipal Court on Wednesday morning.
