The former editor-in-chief of a news website was found with hundreds of images and videos showing child sex abuse, including at least one video he produced himself, prosecutors in western Massachusetts said this week.

Slade Sohmer, the former editor of The Recount, was arraigned in Southern Berkshire District Court Monday on two counts of possessing child pornography and two counts of dimensions of child pornography, the Berkshire District Attorney's Office said Tuesday.

The investigation into the East Otis resident was ongoing, with more charges anticipated, prosecutors said, citing the extremely large amount of pornographic material found on devices seized from Sohmer on Oct. 17. That was prompted by a tip received from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Investigators uncovered messages on Sohmer's Telegram, an encrypted app, that involved discussions, some in graphic detail, of luring, kidnapping and raping children, prosecutors said. They noted that investigators believe there are more images of child sexual abuse on messaging apps connected to Sohmer, including his Telegram and Snapchat.
Resources for victims of sexual assault are available through the National Sexual Violence Resources Center and the National Sexual Assault Telephone Hotline at 800-656-4673, and Massachusetts provides this list of statewide and resources for sexual assault survivors.
At his hearing, a judge set Sohmer's bail amount at $100,000 and ordered he not access the internet, not have contact with any children and notify probation officers of his location, prosecutors said.

The Recount is a news video aggregation site focused largely on politics. It was acquired last month by The News Movement, a Gen Z-focused media group.

"Slade Sohmer is no longer Editor-In-Chief of The Recount following a company restructure exercise in early October to focus on our editorial and commercial plans," a representative for The News Movement said in an email.

It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney who could speak to the charges.

EAST OTIS, Mass. – A man was arraigned in Southern Berkshire Court on charges of child pornography on Monday.

Slade Sohmer of 227 Tolland Road, East Otis is being charged with two counts of Possession of Child Pornography and two counts of Dimensions of Child Pornography.

The Berkshire County Law Enforcement Task Force initiated an investigation into Sohmer on June 16, 2023, following a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. A search warrant executed on October 17, 2023, resulted in the seizure of Sohmer’s phones and multiple electronic devices.

The ongoing investigation, processed by the Berkshire District Attorney’s State Police Detective Unit’s digital evidence lab, has unveiled over a thousand explicit images and videos. Hundreds of these involve child pornography, depicting the assault of minors as young as three to four years old. It has been confirmed that Sohmer produced at least one child pornographic video.

Additionally, the Task Force discovered messages between Sohmer and a second individual on the Telegram Messenger app in 2021. These messages reveal disturbing conversations detailing plans to lure, kidnap, and assault children. The chats include graphic discussions on facilitating child rape and exchanges of additional child pornographic content.

The uncovered evidence also suggests the presence of additional illicit material on messaging apps like Telegram Messenger and Snapchat.

During the arraignment, the defense requested bail to be set at $75,000, and the Commonwealth proposed cash bail of $100,000. The judge set bail at $100,000 cash with strict conditions, including no internet access, mandatory location notification to probation, and no contact with children under the age of 18.

Former editor-in-chief of The Recount, Slade Sohmer, was charged for the possession and distribution of child pornography, according to Massachusetts authorities. The 44-year-old reportedly disseminated “hundreds of child pornography images and videos,” as reported by The Berkshire Eagle. Sohmer, who also worked as a camp counselor for a New York City-based nonprofit, was arrested at his residence in Otis, Massachusetts after a search warrant led to the seizure of his electronic devices. The former editor pleaded not guilty to two charges of possession and two charges of dissemination of child pornography upon his release on a $100,000 bail.

The Recount is a far-left site founded by The Circus’s John Heilemann, who hired Sohmer as editor-in-chief. While Sohmer’s LinkedIn page still lists him as the Editor-in-Chief, The Recount has recently been sold to a far-left Gen-Z news network and its “Team” page is now blank. In 2018, Buzzfeed appeared to celebrate Sohmer discussing his sexuality with 10-year-olds.

Court documents referenced in The Berkshire Eagle report allege Sohmer’s phone contained highly disturbing video clips depicting boys as young as three being sexually assaulted by adults. Authorities initially became aware of the alleged activities through a tipoff from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, which informed the Massachusetts State Police Cyber Crime Unit about a suspicious video circulated on Snapchat in late September of last year.

Upon investigation, the video was linked back to an IP address believed to originate from Sohmer’s home internet account, and on October 18th, Berkshire police confiscated electronic devices from the premises. Authorities allege that one of these devices, Sohmer’s phone, was used to send out 53 videos containing child pornography. There are also claims that Sohmer was filmed directing a minor to perform sexual acts, prompting Assistant District Attorney Marianne Shelvey to suggest further charges may be pending due to the child’s identification.

Slade Sohmer, the now-former editor-in-chief of the left-leaning publication The Recount, was arrested on Friday on charges of possessing more than 1,300 images of child pornography including images of toddlers, according to court documents.

Sohmer was released on $100,000 bail on Monday, after being charged with two counts of possession and two counts dissemination of child pornography.

Berkshire Assistant District Attorney Marianne Shelvey told TheWrap on Tuesday that Sohmer’s collection of images and videos, some involving children as young as 3 or 4 years old, was “one of the most egregious cases” she had ever seen.

In addition to the imagery, authorities obtained text chats, also allegedly from Sohmer, sharing how to kidnap and rape a child. Shelvey said the disturbing chats added “a level of extreme cruelty” to the case.

Sohmer, 44, was dismissed from his job as editor last month, around the time the Berkshire District Attorney began an investigation into allegations of child porn.

He faces between five to 10 years if convicted on the charges. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. He is due back in court on Dec. 21.

“Unfortunately, the nature of these charges do not allow them to ask that he be held without bail,” Shelvey said. Sohmer was ordered not to contact minors under 18 and was forbidden from accessing the internet, although he is allowed the use of a cell phone.

A cyber tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in June led to the Oct. 18 search of Sohmer’s home in Otis, Massachusetts, where officials found the images and videos of child pornography, the D.A. told TheWrap.

Local paper The Berkshire Eagle first reported that prosecutors claim Sohmer not only possessed and disseminated, but produced the content.

In a statement to TheWrap, The Recount said that Sohmer was no longer editor-in-chief of the political site specializing in video and social media journalism. His departure came “following a company restructure exercise in early October to focus on our editorial and commercial plans,” the statement said. A company spokesperson had no further comment.

Sohmer has a longstanding journalism career at a number of New York City-based digital outlets. In addition to The Recount, where he served as editor-in-chief for four years, he was the managing editor for news and video at Mic, a political news radio host at SiriusXM, and was cofounder of the internet news site Hyper Vocal.

The charges against Sohmer additionally cast Sohmer’s time as a summer camp counselor and director in a different light. The journalist also went mildly viral for his dealings with young children in 2018 after posting a Twitter thread about visiting his mother’s fourth grade class.

A 2014 Instagram post from Summer 365 — who advise and advocate for sleepaway camps and summer programs — featured a picture of Sohmer with several young campers in the background. The caption identifies him as “camp legend Slade Sohmer.” Sohmer’s LinkedIn lists him as a codirector a Camp Power since 2010.

Summer 365 did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Buzzfeed ran the story about visiting his mother’s fourth grade classroom in 2018. Via a series of tweets, he said he was worried about telling the class of 10 year-olds, who peppered him with questions, that he lives with his boyfriend.

“It’s not like I misjudged these kids or had any preconceived notions,” he told BuzzFeed at the time. “I just don’t know what today’s fourth graders know about love and sexuality and gender and all its modern permutations. I’m glad it went down the way it did, but it’s not like I expected them to throw tomatoes at me after the big reveal.”
