A San Fran tech CEO just issued an email warning of civil war unless you vote for Biden https://t.co/MzpzRZV2GX

I admire @dbarrett's courage to state unequivocally what he believes in, even in spite of the inevitably polarizing effect such an email is likely to have.
— Rick Klau (@rklau) October 22, 2020
And yes, I happen to agree with him. But if I was doing business with someone who felt this strongly in the favor of a candidate / position in opposition to me, I'd actually really like to know that too.

A little more color from @dbarrett on how the company approached this communication. Really impressed.https://t.co/DbuQgxr445

This interview @dbarrett did with @protocol reveals the process the company followed to engage all employees in the discussion ahead of making a statement. It's a fascinating look into a company leaning into the moment. Thoroughly impressed.https://t.co/8XstZGY4Dg

Thank you, Valerie!

You don’t see it because it’s not appropriate for someone to use a business email list for this. Do you want Verizon sending you their opinion? AT&T? Comcast?
— 44 Years an Imbecile (@20Slots) October 22, 2020
Yes. It is appropriate, and it's covered in the email too. Not many expense reports get filed in a civil war. This is an existential crisis and it's absolutely appropriate to take steps to protect your revenue. pic.twitter.com/dscRTR1yt8

I’m cancelling! We have been a customer for 2 years. I don’t need an expense report software company lecturing me and my employees on politics. Misuse of our privacy with our emails. Their software sucks anyways and we were only hanging off due to the inconvenience of switching.

Hey there! I see that you may be canceling your service with Expensify. Have you had a chance to look at Certify yet? If you're considering other systems, I'd love the chance to show how Certify could be a great alternative.

implicit threats by an employer about future employment status is nowhere near the same thing as expressing your beliefs and explaining them
— Rick Klau (@rklau) October 22, 2020
He did write you a whole letter explaining how he dared to do it. Did you even read it?
— Jac (@jacalata) October 23, 2020
That's because most business owners don't believe they have the privilege to use their business opt-in marketing lists for personal opinion venting. Clearly he thinks he's special and has the right to spam.
— Kelly B ケリー・ブレーデ (@kbradyatcsl) October 23, 2020
Run your business. Keep your politics in your house and with friends, on Facebook. He's incorrect of course. Especially with what came out big time today if he's paying attention. Why would a conservative even try to work for them now? What if they are already employed there
— Jeffrey Carter (@pointsnfigures) October 23, 2020
Yep. A grossly intolerant atmosphere where you’d be afraid to speak out on anything. Play all the ping pong you want, but don’t you dare step out of political line.
— TheAveragePM (@AveragePm) October 23, 2020
Completely agree and feel the same. Let me know what good alternatives you find.
— Matt Gentry (@xgentryx) October 23, 2020
As someone that has used Expensify in the past, I received this email. As someone that is about to launch a new company, I have made the decision to never use Expensify. Do not leverage your customer base to push your political beliefs. We’re in a business contract, not a forum.
— Marie (@FLtoNC123) October 23, 2020
But you didn't. It's only inclusive of your viewpoint. You said that if they voted for Trump then you're against democracy... That's an awfully broad brush to paint with.
— Chappy 🇧🇷 (@itschappy) October 23, 2020
"inclusive and respectful"

“If you don’t vote like me, you don’t care about democracy”
To state that anyone not voting exactly like you doesn’t care about democracy or even wants Trump to win (I don’t) is a slap in the face to millions of logical thinking adults of sound mind. pic.twitter.com/eFuNKrvfKa
