PS3 To PS4 Upgrade Program Detailed At Last :)

The PS3 to PS4 upgrade program has finally been detailed.

At Gamescom 2013, Sony had announced that anyone who buys a game for their PlayStation 3 which will also be available for the PS4 would get an upgrade for cheap. Considering that some of us don’t like to wait to play new games and might actually want the next-gen version later, this sounds like a great idea.

For a measly 10 dollars, that copy you get of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Watch Dogs, Battlefield 4, or Call of Duty: Ghosts for PS3 would earn you the PS4 version for download. NBA 2K14 will be about $2 more.

However, this isn’t a trade-in for physical PS3 disc owners. It will merely be an upgrade to a higher definition version of the game, but you will still need the PS3 disc to run it. There will not be a code involved, either, unless it’s the game code installed to your hard drive. You will simply see the game you own available for the PS4 at the discounted price using the PS3 to PS4 upgrade.

Sony says that while you’re upgrading the PS3 disc to PS4, you should not have the actual disc in the console or it could result in a malfunction. That could mean a day or two of not playing any games at all, or sticking to just downloads until the PS3 to PS4 upgrade is complete, depending on your internet speed. We doubt that the disc itself could be harmed in the process, as game discs are not re-writable. It could mean that the console will confuse the game code between the two if both are being accessed and result in a bad install.

There is a time limit before this program expires, though. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Watch Dogs will give you until January 31, Battlefield 4 until March 28, and NBA 2K14 and Call of Duty: Ghosts until March 31. Be sure to take advantage of the PS3 to PS4 upgrade program while you can.
