Naser Kelmendi, 56, was arrested Sunday along with his aide Fuad Nikqi on an international warrant, a police statement said.

The Kosovo-born Albanian with Bosnian citizenship faces sanctions under the US Kingpin Act after being added to a US blacklist in 2012 for his role in drug trafficking.

Police said they raided two locations "used by the suspects, confiscating some evidence and two cars".

Kelmendi escaped a sweep launched in Bosnia in September 2012 against the massive crime syndicate, suspected notably of drugs trafficking, murders and infiltrating official bodies.

Twenty-five people were arrested in raids on 30 locations around the capital Sarajevo and in eastern Bosnia.

Kosovo and Bosnia lie on the so-called Balkans Route used to smuggle people, arms and drugs towards western Europe.

Kelmendi, who owns a large transportation and hotelier business in Bosnia, was not in the country at the time, but his hotel in Sarajevo was searched.

Meanwhile, Bosnian Minister of Security Fahrudin Radoncic said Sarajevo was awaiting official confirmation of Kelmendi's arrest, the FENA news agency reported.
