KANGAR - Police have detained the parents of a 17-year-old girl suspected of throwing her newborn baby girl into a canal, bringing the total number of suspects in the case to six as of Thursday night.

The couple, in their 40s, were detained at 9.47 pm, said Perlis Criminal Investigation Department chief Supt Mohd Nashir Ya here Friday.

Police found the body of newborn baby in a canal at Kampung Behor Rotan Pahit, Simpang Empat around 1am Thursday, after being tipped off by a medical officer at the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital.

The medical officer had reported his suspicions after a female student was referred to the hospital for bleeding at 9.20pm Wednesday.

Based on the report, police and Fire and Rescue Department personnel carried out an operation to rescue the baby after learning that the infant had been dumped in the canal about three kilometres from the student's house.

Police then detained four individuals, including the girl and her boyfriend, on the same night.
