A woman allegedly flung her newborn son from her third floor house within minutes of giving birth in Gujarat’s diamond city Surat around midnight on Thursday, police said. The infant died in a hospital on Friday. “I was confused and scared after the delivery and did not know what to do with the baby,” Pooja, wife of diamond worker Jignesh Shaparia, was quoted as telling the police.

The police have registered a case of murder and suspect Pooja, who married Shaparia in February, was not ready for a child within a year of marriage.

“We are probing all possible angles and her family members are being questioned,” a police officer said.

Pooja, believed to be in her 20s, gave birth in the bathroom of her house, police said. It was not immediately known if she was alone in the house. “She is unwell and under observation at a state-run hospital,” the officer said.
