A teacher and teacher's assistant are accused of duct taping a student’s mouth shut in their special education class Thursday at John Cabrillo Elementary.
A concerned parent called FOX40 to say what had happened. She said the teacher's assistant held the students arms back, "like they were handcuffing him," while the teacher duct taped the student’s mouth shut for "talking too much."
The teachers also used scissors to cut the tape, right in front of the boy's face.
The school’s principal called parents with children in the class to apologize for the teachers’ behavior.
"How the principal found out was a went home and told his parents he was disturbed by what he saw," said the boy's mother, Laurie Silva.
The boy's parents say they incident has taken its toll on their son.
"He's pacing the house, biting his nails, asking questions like, 'Am I in trouble?'" said Floyd Vargas, the boy's father.
Sacramento City Unified School District spokesman Gabe Ross sent FOX40 the following statement:
“Last night (Thursday), the school district received information about two employees who may have used inappropriate disciplinary measures with a student in school. The Sacramento City Unified School District acted immediately in response to these types of allegations, removing the employees in question from campus and placing them on administrative leave pending a full investigation. Parents at the school have been notified via an automated phone message and a letter home to families is scheduled to go out this afternoon. The safety of students is our top priority and, should these allegations prove true, the school and the district will take the strongest possible action against these individuals.”
Sacramento Police investigators are now looking into the incident to decide if charges will be filed.
