An Oakland County father was arraigned Sunday on charges he beat his 4-month-old son to death.
In a statement today, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department said officers Richard Gillis III, 23, was arraigned on charges of felony murder and first-degree child abuse. He is being held in the Oakland County Jail without bond.
“Biological father is the key suspect,” the press released noted. “He has been interviewed and made several incriminating statements.”
Additional details about that statement were not released.
Police allege Gillis beat his son, Richard Gillis IV, who was not breathing when officers responded to the family home on June 10.
A subsequent medical exam showed the infant suffered “significant abuse,” including internal cranial bleeds, multiple skull fractures, and multiple rib fractures.
The infant was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center where he was placed on life support, which was removed June 14.
A medical examiner later said the infant died from craniocerebral trauma and ruled his death a homicide.
Gillis III faces a mandatory life-without-parole sentence if convicted as charged.
