A Moreno Valley gang member accused of joining seven youths in sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl in a park restroom pleaded not guilty today to multiple felony charges.
Michael Bobby Devon Sykes, 19, is charged with four counts of aggravated sexual assault, one count each of kidnapping and gang activity, as well as numerous sentence-enhancing allegations of committing a violent felony for the benefit of a criminal street gang.
Sykes appeared with his public defender before Riverside County Superior Court Judge Becky Dugan, who set a felony settlement conference in the case for May 13.
The defendant is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.
On the night of March 10, Sykes and seven teenage members of the South Side Mafia street gang allegedly corralled the victim — whose name was withheld — in a public bathroom at Victoriano Park, near Los Cabos Drive and Iris Avenue.
The gang members allegedly took turns assaulting her over an undisclosed period of time.
The juveniles were arrested shortly after the alleged attack. Sykes remained at large until late last month, when detectives located and arrested him without incident.
It was not immediately clear whether the girl knew Sykes or any of the other defendants, who are being held at Riverside Juvenile Hall.
