Supporters of Aung San Suu Kyi are hopeful that the Nobel Peace Prize winner will be set free on Saturday.

Ms Suu Kyi, 65, who has been detained for 15 of the past 21 years, reportedly lost an appeal for early release from house arrest.

The sentence is due to expire tomorrow, although aides remain optimistic she will be freed.

Burma's ruling junta has not confirmed she will be set free, but government officials have quietly said they are making "necessary security preparations" for the weekend.

It came as the pro-junta political party secured a majority of seats in both houses of Parliament, according to official results from the country's first election in 20 years.

Critics say the election was marred by fraud and engineered to sustain the military's power.

Ms Suu Kyi has called on her supporters to expose electoral fraud, according to her lawyer.
