THE KING Island community saved 54 stranded pilot whales and five bottlenose dolphins yesterday.
They were the survivors from a group of about 200 whales and dolphins that beached at Naracoopa on the island's east coast on Sunday night.
Department of Primary Industries and Water marine conservation officers believed the rescue was a triumph for the 150-strong group that fought to save the beached mammals.
When the rescue efforts resumed early yesterday morning, 54 pilot whales and six bottlenose dolphins were alive.
Almost all were returned to the ocean yesterday, incident controller Chris Arthur said.
"The community effort, working with DPIW, it's been outstanding. It's been an incredible result," he said.
"The King Island community has turned out and worked really hard. They've stabilised the animals ... it's been a really, really incredible effort.
