The European Union will transfer around 2,000 peacekeepers to a United Nations force in Chad.
The EU deployed 3,300 soldiers in Eastern Chad and the Central African Republic on February 2009 in order to protect refugees and civilians who fled violence in Darfur. EU officials said on Thursday, March 12 that about 2,000 soldiers of the current 3.300 EU troops will stay in the region as part of the UN mission.
The EU peacekeepers' mandate will primarily last for a year and it will have a maximum of 5,200 military personnel and 300 police.
The EU force in the region was comprised of around 3,300 soldiers coming from 14 countries, primarily those of France whose troops make up around half the contingent.
