Urologist accused of sexually battering medical students while working for UM

MIAMI — An award-winning urologist who was once a professor at the University of Miami ― and who later went to work in Dubai ― is now back in South Florida to answer to allegations that he sexually battered multiple medical students during his time at UM.

Miami police said Dr. Ranjith Ramasamy, 45, once the university’s director of male reproductive medicine and surgery, did so under the guise of performing invasive and sometimes painful medical examinations that an outside expert later determined were unnecessary.

In an arrest warrant, Miami Police Department Detective Louis Joseph wrote that there were “six victims,” three of whom whose allegations form the basis for Ramasamy’s three sexual battery charges. They stem from his tenure of nearly a decade at UM, which ended in 2024. All of the identified victims were men.

According to the warrant, Ramasamy sought semen samples from the students ― some of which were done under the initial pretense of research ― and subjected them to unneeded testicular, penis and rectal examinations, including “prostate massages,” after claiming that the samples showed abnormalities.

Ramasamy even used a “false STD test” with one victim “to justify further interventions that were not medically necessary,” Joseph wrote, saying that Ramasamy subjected the man to “serial examinations of the genitals and prostate every week” without any medical reason.

Ramasamy, who formerly lived in Pinecrest and whose current listed address is in rural Sarasota County, returned to South Florida from Dubai to voluntarily self-surrender, according to court proceedings on Thursday.

Records show he was arrested at Miami International Airport at around 10:45 a.m. Thursday by deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.

In court on Thursday, he was ordered held on a $120,000 bond, to be on house arrest with a GPS monitor and to have no contact with his accusers.
