GREENWOOD, Ind. — Police now say a death investigation has turned into a homicide investigation in Greenwood, and they're hoping the public can help them find the person responsible.

On Greenway Street Wednesday, detectives went door to door hunting down clues in the homicide case involving a pregnant mom and her 3-year-old son. A killer is still on the loose.

"It's just so terrifying and I just, hearing about this community that has felt very safe, it just, you know, really shakes us up," said neighbor Emily Major, who lives across from the victims' house. "We're worrying about our kids and playing outside. It's just scary."

"It is kind of scary," added neighbor Joe Berghoff. "And a toddler, a child being involved, it's just sad."

Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison called what happened a "heinous act" and said his officers are working with little sleep trying to solve a case that's affecting them deeply professionally and personally because of the circumstances and the age of the victims.

"I can tell you from almost a 30-year law enforcement career, it's the children that leave the lasting trauma to police officers," Ison said.

Right now, investigators aren't revealing a motive, a suspect profile or manner of death to preserve the integrity of the investigation. But they do say 33-year-old Karon Clay was the victim of a homicide, a mom murdered in her third trimester of pregnancy. Investigators haven't shared yet how little Karter died.

"She'd just moved in a few months ago," Major said of Karon Clay. "She looked very pregnant and she seemed very nice when I saw her for a few minutes. but other than that, she's kind of kept to herself and was in the house. But, oh my gosh, it breaks my heart. I can't even imagine and you know, I'm just praying for her family. I can't imagine going through this."

Police say one of the challenges of this homicide investigation is time.

They believe Clay and her son died as much as a week before police were called to do a welfare check and found the bodies in the home.

"When you have that length of time — days — the decomposition was well underway, so it makes the investigation that much more difficult," Ison said.

Now, police want help from the public. They say it could be essential to cracking the case.

They're looking for security or surveillance video, reports on anything suspicious people saw or heard between July 28 and Aug. 1. Police say even something that may seem insignificant could be helpful to the investigation.

"We've already obtained several Ring videos, surveillance cameras from neighbors, but there's probably more out there that we haven't located," Ison said. "If anyone's heard anything, if anyone has any insight into who may be responsible for this, that's what we're looking for. We're just asking you to give us a call and let us know."

Neighbors hope that leads to swift justice.

"Well I hope that the person gets caught very quickly. Hope everybody can get back to feeling safe in the neighborhood," neighbor Daulton Kramer said.

Meanwhile, Greenwood's top cop has a message for the killer.

"Turn yourself in. We are going to find you. We are not going to stop. We will be relentless," Ison said. "The public has my word that we are putting every resource possible toward a conclusion to this."
