WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winton-Salem police responded to three shooting this past weekend, leaving five dead. All of the victims were under the age of 24.

We spoke with Winston-Salem police chief William Penn, he said what all these cases at in common was youth violence.

“I want everyone to take some time and look at the ages of those involved and pay attention to the time.. Pay attention to the time and the ages, not just the numbers, but pay attention to that and then think about what I’ve been saying," said Penn.

The first homicide occurred on the 4800 block of Berl Street. Officers said they responded around 7:45 p.m. and found Jaquavion Lewis, 16 suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police said evidence indicates Lewis appears to have attempted to rob individuals during the sale of a firearm. They said this then led to an act of self-defense. The Forsyth County District Attorney's office will not filing charges at this time.

Saturday morning

WSPD said they responded to the 900 block of Cameron Avenue at 1:38 a.m. and located three people with gunshot wounds. Destiny Quiterio-Avila, 17, Alan Lopez, 18, and Kelsea Perkins, 23 were declared dead at the scene.

"There is a case where we know that there’s associations with gangs, validated gang members, and so, it being a gang violent act has not been ruled out,” said Penn.

Neighbors said there was a party at a residence and a drive-by shooting happened.

"30-40 folks at that party on Cameron and very little cooperation. Three lives and very little cooperation," said Penn.

Sunday morning

The last homicide happened at 12:25 a.m. on Sunday. Officers said they responded to the 3000 block of North Patterson Avenue. Police said they found Deshaun Christian Capers on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds.

WSPD believes this is an isolated incident.

Chief Penn said the community needs to step up.

"The message hasn’t changed the community is the village and we have a responsibility particularly to our youth to guide them support them and lead them to the right direction," said Penn.

We reached out to the families of these victims. Perkins' sister gave us the following statement.
My sister was so loved by any one she came in contact with. She was a kind & genuine woman. Her smile could light up any room she was in. She was confident, and pursued her dreams & goals. She will be deeply, deeply missed. I pray that her legacy will forever impact those in the Winston-Salem area as it has here in Arizona.
WSPD is still investigating all five cases.
