ATLANTA — Rapper Young Scooter was reported dead Friday night. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office said 39-year-old Kenneth Bailey was taken to the hospital and died after an incident in the 200 block of William Nye Drive SE in Atlanta.
Bailey is known by is stage name, Young Scooter. Other outlets also reported the news of his death Friday night.
According to Lt. Andrew Smith, and APD homicide commander, officers responded to a dispute with a weapon Friday. He said initial reports indicated that shots were fired and that a female was dragged back inside the location.
"Once officers arrived they knocked on the door. A male opened the door and immediately shut the door on the officers," he said.
APD then set up a perimeter at the scene, Smith added.
"During the process of establishing the perimeter, two males fled out of the rear of the house," he said. "One male returned back into the house. The other male jumped two fences as he was fleeing. When officers located him on the other side of the fence, he appeared to have suffered an injury to his leg."
APD said aid was rendered at the scene; he was taken to the hospital and died.
You can hear Atlanta Police describe the response in the video below; they also gave a statement on another, separate incident.
"Just to be very clear, the injury that was sustained was not via the officers on scene. It was when the male was fleeing," Smith. added.
While APD did not confirm the man's identity during the news conference, the medical examiner's office said Bailey had died from the incident, adding that the Grady Marcus Trauma Center reported the death.
Smith explained it appears he fractured or injured his leg in some way when he fell, causing bleeding. APD reiterated its officers did not fire any shots.
While the 911 call indicated there was a female who was dragged back into the residence, Smith said they were not able to locate a woman.
"We have not been able to substantiate any of that, which is also a part of our investigation," he said.
In the meantime, the medical examiner's office said the cause and manner of death are currently undetermined. An autopsy has not yet been completed.
The rapper, originally from South Carolina, is well known in the music industry and connected to metro Atlanta's music scene. He has songs with multiple artists, including Future and Young Thug.
