GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — A man who pleaded no contest to two counts of torture and count of intimidating a witness will spend at least the next 14 years behind bars.

Saul Ipina-Lucio was sentenced Monday at a Kent County court to between 14 and 30 years for torturing his now ex-wife, whom he accused of cheating on him.

“Anyone who would do this type of thing, I think is a danger in general,” said Judge George Jay Quist. “This is some of the most egregious conduct that I’ve seen in this court.”

The victim testified before a jury for just one day, before the defense pleaded to no contest earlier this month. According to court records, Lucio electrocuted his now ex-wife during one incident and hung a noose around her neck while she stood on a bucket in another.

“He would hit her while she was on the bucket,” Quist said while summarizing testimony. She eventually fell off and she was hanging there for a brief period time, Mr. Lucio did cut her down. The second case of torture, he tied her down. He attached some metal to her and used some wires to electrocute her.”

Lucio was given credit for time served for intimidating a witness. Quist said his two other counts will be served concurrently anywhere between 14 to 30 years.

“I just want to apologize to my victim, first of all and everyone that I hurt in this process, which is my entire family and community,” Lucio said.
