PORTLAND — There are many unanswered questions about the death ofMelissa Jubane, who was murdered less than two weeks after getting married to her fiancรฉ in August. Jubane was a beloved member of her community and a dedicated nurse at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland.

Jubane, 32, was found dead on Sept. 6, just two days after being reported missing. Jubane's neighbor, 27-year-old Bryce Jonathan Schubert, is behind bars accused in her murder. Law enforcement officials have released few details about what led up to Jubane's death and the alleged killer's possible motive in the name of preserving the integrity of the investigation.

Timeline of events

Jubane married her fiancรฉ Bryan Llantero on Aug. 25 in Hawaii. On Sept. 4 at 6 a.m., Jubane had her last contact with her husband.

At 10:18 a.m. on Sept. 4, a welfare check was done after Jubane did not show up for work at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. Then, at 3:12 p.m., Jubane was entered into the missing person's database.

Jubane's friends and coworkers started searching for her themselves around her Beaverton apartment complex.“It's something that, you know, is a BIPOC community. You know, people of color, marginalized groups, you know, especially young women too. It's important to look out for those kind of groups,” said JP Schiller, a community member who participated in the search.

“We have a very small Filipino community in Oregon and when we heard a Filipino member of our community, a member of our community, was missing and a stand-up member of the community, it drove some concern,” said Cheryl Nervez.

On Sept. 6, Jubane's remains were found and Schubert was taken into custody by the Beaverton Police Department.
This is an active investigation," Beaverton police wrote. "While we acknowledge the significant community interest and concern, we must withhold further details to preserve the integrity of the investigation.
On Sept. 9, Schubert appeared in court virtually for the first time. Schubert is charged with murder in the second-degree, first-degree kidnapping, and abuse of a corpse.

Schubert appeared in court again on Sept. 10 andwas seen in an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs with an attorney present who tried to shield him from the cameras.

Schubert did not enter a plea during his court appearances and remains behind bars without bail.

Media outlets are often able to access court documents, such as the probable cause affidavit, which would reveal more details about the case such as where Jubane's body was found and possibly even a suspected motive. But those documents were sealed on Sept. 9 at the request of Washington County prosecutors and it's unknown when they will be available to the public.

What we know about Bryce Schubert

Schubert was Jubane's neighbor in their Beaverton apartment complex. According to Beaverton police, Schubert is accused of kidnapping and killing Jubane on or about Sept. 4.

Schubert worked at Portland Providence Medical Center from September 2022 to October 2023. Hospital officials said Providence does not employ Schubert at this time and he has never been employed at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, where Jubane worked.

Family and friends in mourning

Jubane's family provided this statement to KATU News:
We are extremely grateful for the detectives and other staff working diligently on this case, for the love and support we are receiving from the entire nation (especially from the city of Beaverton and the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, her work family at Providence St Vincent’s, and the Llantero family), and for all the prayers.
"She was the kind of nurse that you get to the unit to start your shift and you’d see she’s on the schedule, and you’d just exhale and be like, ‘We’re going to be okay,'" said Olivia Fults, one of Jubane's coworkers. "She had a lot of life left to live."

"She was a very helpful person. She loved helping people. She had a really big heart," said Samantha Oregon, a friend of Melissa. "She had a really big heart. No matter the situation or what it was, she was always willing to help people. You know, she loved her family, she loved her friends, she loved her dog."

Hundreds of people gathered at avigil for Jubane on Sept. 9 to pay their respects and honor her. A memorial outside Jubane's apartment building continues to grow with flowers, cards, and photos of Jubane showing her as a dedicated coworker, loving friend, daughter, and new wife.

The why and how in Jubane's murder investigation is still unknown. Schubert is expected back in court later in September, but until then, Jubane's community will wait for answers.
