John Aylor, who has a lengthy arrest history in Hillsborough, mainly for drug and property crimes, is addicted to drugs and has previously broken into his mother’s home and stolen things, Chronister said. Meanwhile, Julie Aylor took care of John Aylor’s daughter, who is 10, Chronister said.

“She’s been the person who his daughter can rely on as her guardian, as the person who makes sure that she has the basic essentials in life,” Chronister said.

On Monday morning, John Aylor crawled through a dog door, armed himself with a knife and went to his mother’s bedroom, where investigators believe the mother and son began to argue “over what he could steal,” Chronister said.

Aylor then stabbed his mother once in the chest, according to Chronister.

Aylor’s daughter and a teenager who were home at the time were awakened by Julie Aylor’s screams. They told deputies they heard Julie Aylor pleading with her son to help her, Chronister said. Julie Aylor then crawled to the teenager’s bedroom and asked the teen to call 911.

Aylor is a transient who couch-surfed or stayed in homeless encampments, so deputies searched encampments along the Alafia River for him and found his cellphone, Chronister said. The break in the hunt came Tuesday, when someone called saying they saw a news story about the search for Aylor and had just seen him at a home on Marjorie Avenue, where he was ultimately arrested. The home is about a half-mile north of Aylor’s mother’s home.

The sheriff’s office released a short body camera video showing his arrest.

Chronister noted that he doesn’t hold a news conference for every homicide his office investigates, but said he felt compelled to speak about the Aylor case because it’s the 14th family-related homicide in his jurisdiction this year. In all of 2023, there were 16 such cases, Chronister said.

The sheriff said family violence is often a “silent crime,” and he urged anyone who may be a victim to seek help.

“We are so fortunate that we live in a community where help is available, phenomenal resources like the Spring of Tampa Bay, but the only way that we’re going to stop family violence is if you have the courage to say enough is enough and you ask for help,” Chronister said. “That’s my plea today.”

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. - Hillsborough County deputies have caught the man they say stabbed his own mother to death on Monday.

The sheriff's office also released new video Tuesday of John Aylor, 37, being arrested about 24 hours after the stabbing death of his mother, Julie Aylor, 64, at her home in Brandon.

"She just wanted me to help her. I couldn't help her," said her granddaughter, Jaylynn Blair, 16, who was in the home at the time of the attack.

John Aylor fled the home on Silvercrest Ln. after deputies say he stabbed Julie Aylor to death. A tip from someone who had seen him on the news led deputies to a homeless encampment Tuesday morning, where he was arrested.

Family says she had let him in four days earlier and let him bathe.

"She made him a couple of sandwiches and told him ‘you still have to go, son,’" said her daughter, Kristina Blair. "I love you, and I don't like to see you like this."

But Monday morning, the sheriff says, he broke in to steal things he had hoped to trade for drug money. He stabbed her as they argued.

Family says she had long considered him a threat, and that she repeatedly tried to access public resources.

He had been Baker Acted before and had been arrested three dozen times as his dependence on drugs grew.

"I never thought in a million years that my own brother would take my mom's life," said Kristina Blair. "My brother took my mom from me for the rest of my life."

Sheriff Chad Chronister said Tuesday that there have been 14 family related homicides this year, compared to 16 all of last year.

Julie had been caring for her son's daughter, who lost her grandmother and father all at once.

"The only constant in her life being her grandmother, is now gone. What happens to her?" said Chronister. "The ripples of this violence will go on forever."

Even in the neighborhood, she was known for always being on walks with her grandchildren, and for helping whoever needed it.

"I just miss her. She just helped a lot of people," said Jaylynn Blair. "She was always here for me and everybody that was around her. She never let nobody go without, never even let her son go without."

The sheriff pleaded with anyone who is dealing with the threat of domestic violence to get in touch with public resources like The Spring of Tampa Bay.

The suspect is due in court for his first appearance Wednesday afternoon.

According to HCSO, John Aylor has an extensive criminal history with their sheriff's office dating back to 2003. Some of those charges include grand theft of a motor vehicle and felony petit theft.

This is an ongoing investigation.

BRANDON, Florida - Family, friends and neighbors gathered with roses and candles Wednesday to remember a mother stabbed to death by her own son.

John Aylor, 37, is accused of breaking into his mother's home to steal things for drug money on Monday. They got into an argument, and he stabbed 64-year-old Julie Aylor to death.

Many gathered at the home where she was killed, remembering her and showing support.

"My mom was a good mom. She was brutally attacked by her own son, the person that loved her. I mean, I could only imagine what was going through her mind. Did she say stop? Help? Then why didn't he stop and help?" said Kristina Blair, the victim’s daughter and the suspect's sister. "My mother was stabbed multiple times. In the front, in the back. My mother tried to get away from him ... Despite all of this, my mom was there for him through thick and thin. She loved her son."

Still, the family wants justice, hoping their brother gets the most extreme sentencing.

"I want the death penalty. I want the death penalty. I will not stop until he gets the death penalty," Blair said.

The family said they had long considered him a threat, trying to seek public resources to get him help. He had been baker acted and arrested three dozen times. Now, he’s charged with murder.

The suspect faced a judge for the first time since the deadly stabbing. He was wearing a suicide prevention suit three days after the attack.

His pre-trial detention hearing is set for Friday, where the state will lay out evidence to keep him behind bars. The family plans to be there for that, although they said it will be tough to hear the gruesome details of his attack.
