Incredible to hear the media interview doctors that tell us,
"No need to worry." or "No need to panic."

Davos: World must be ready to fight 'disease X' together, says WHO chief
January 17, 2024

'Disease X' is a common enemy that the world must be prepared to fight together, World Health Organisation director general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned on Wednesday.

The name, given to the as yet unknown cause of the next potential pandemic, first appeared on the WHO's list of priority diseases in 2018, the year before Covid-19 emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

“You may even call Covid the first 'disease X'. And it may happen again,” Dr Tedros told a session at Davos.

“Of course there are some people who say, oh, this may create panic. No, it's better, actually, to anticipate something that may happen, because it has happened in our history many times, and prepare for it.”

In 2021, the WHO outlined plans to create a pandemic treaty that would serve as a blueprint for tackling future global outbreaks.

Dr Tedros told Davos the pandemic treaty will be key in protecting the world from future outbreaks.

Deadline for pandemic agreement is May 2024.

Scientists in China have recently conducted experiments on a novel coronavirus strain, GX_P2V. It resulted in a 100% fatality rate in genetically-modified mice. This strain is a mutation of GX/2017, a virus initially identified in Malaysian pangolins in 2017.

The study, originating from Beijing, notes the swift and lethal impact of GX_P2V on mice with human-like genetic structures. The virus, targetting multiple organs including the brain, led to rapid deterioration in the mice's condition, culminating in death within eight days.

The mice got very sick quickly. They lost a lot of weight, couldn't move well, and their eyes turned white before they died. This study is different because all the mice died, which is more than what happened in other studies about similar viruses.

“SARS-CoV-2-related pangolin coronavirus GX_P2V(short_3UTR) can cause 100% mortality in human ACE2-transgenic mice, potentially attributable to late-stage brain infection. This underscores a spillover risk of GX_P2V into humans and provides a unique model for understanding the pathogenic mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2-related viruses," wrote the authors.

But, it's not clear what this means for people. The study does not directly correlate these results with potential effects on humans.

Experts slam the study

Some experts, like Francois Balloux from the University College London, think this study is not useful and could be dangerous.

“It's a terrible study, scientifically totally pointless. I can see nothing of vague interest that could be learned from force-infecting a weird breed of humanised mice with a random virus. Conversely, I could see how such stuff might go wrong," he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

“This madness must be stopped before too late," posted Dr. Gennadi Glinsky, a retired professor.

This study is separate from the research in Wuhan, which was linked to different ideas about where COVID-19 came from. The origin of COVID-19 is still not known. The new study in China raises questions about doing risky experiments with viruses.

If a report doing the rounds on a database of pre-peer reviewed journal articles is to be believed, China has been experimenting with a new deadly Covid-like virus which is 100 per cent fatal to mice and could affect humans.

The paper published on bioRxiv website on January 3 claimed that doctors trained by the Chinese military made their version of the so-called "pangolin coronavirus" and gave it to a group of mice to see what would happen.

"Four mice inoculated with inactivated virus and four mock-infected mice were used as controls. Surprisingly, all the mice that were infected with the live virus succumbed to the infection within 7-8 days post-inoculation," the paper said.

Deaths linked to brain infection

Experts found that the four mice given the virus lost weight within five days after being infected. On the seventh day, the mice started to become sluggish and their eyes went white.

"In the mice infected with live virus, the viral load in the lungs significantly decreased by day 6; both the viral RNA loads and viral titers in the brain samples were relatively low on day 3, but substantially increased by day 6. This finding suggested that severe brain infection during the later stages of infection may be the key cause of death in these mice," the paper further said.

Researchers said that the cause of death may be linked to the occurrence of late brain infection.

The virus had not only spread to the mice's bodies but also reached critical organs such as the brain, eyes, and lungs.

"To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report showing that a SARS-CoV-2-related pangolin coronavirus can cause 100% mortality in hACE2 mice, suggesting a risk for GX_P2V to spill over into humans," the researchers added.

China warns of potential resurgence of Covid

Chinese authorities on Sunday warned of a potential resurgence of Covid this month driven by the JN.1 subvariant. The National Health Commission (NHC) highlighted the increasing presence of JN.1 and said that multiple respiratory diseases were likely to spread this winter and next spring.

"Influenza viruses are expected to remain the dominant pathogen," Wang Dayan, head of the Chinese National Influenza Center, told reporters.

He attributed the JN.1's rise to several factors including imported cases, lower influenza rates and declining population immunity.

WASHINGTON — Chinese researchers claim to have “cloned” a COVID-like virus mutation that showed a 100% mortality rate in mice.

In a report by researchers under a collaborative project between China and Mongolia, scientists explained the virus is a strain of coronavirus found in pangolins. They then cloned the virus and tested it on mice.

Each mouse tested on displayed symptoms of “piloerection, hunched posture, and sluggish movements” along with their eyes turning white and weight loss. They each died within eight days with “late brain infection” being the supposed cause.

Researchers continued, noting the infection could “spillover” to humans.

Infectious disease expert and University College London Professor Francois Balloux said via X that the study appears “totally pointless.”

“I had a look at the preprint. It's a terrible study, scientifically totally pointless,” Balloux wrote. “I can see nothing of vague interest that could be learned from force-infecting a weird breed of humanised mice with a random virus. Conversely, I could see how such stuff might go wrong ...”

Biologist Alex Washburne also noted the study’s format as a “letter to the editor” raises further questions.

“We also can't verify anything about the pre-print. The structure ‘Dear Editor, ...’ raises questions about the provenance of the document (was it really written by the listed authors?) and the intentions of its release,” Washburne said.

The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency offered hush money to analysts to cover up their findings that COVID-19 likely originated in a Wuhan, China laboratory, a whistleblower alleged in September. In February 2023, The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. Department of Energy concluded that COVID-19 originated in a Wuhan lab.

Other reports show that the Biden administration pressured Meta to suppress posts about the virus, including ones that theorized a lab leak theory.
