Plans for a global pandemic preparedness agreement risk falling apart amid wrangling and disinformation, according to the chief of the World Health Organization, who has warned that future generations “may not forgive us”.
Shaken by the Covid-19 pandemic, the WHO’s 194 member states decided more than two years ago to start negotiating an international accord aimed at ensuring countries are better equipped to deal with the next health catastrophe, or to prevent it altogether.
The plan was to seal the agreement at the 2024 World Health Assembly, the WHO’s decision-making body, which convenes on 27 May.
However, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO’s director-general, said the momentum had been slowed down by entrenched positions and “a torrent of fake news, lies, and conspiracy theories”.
He warned that if nobody was prepared to seize the initiative or give ground, the whole project risked going nowhere.
Tedros told the WHO’s executive board in Geneva on Monday: “Time is very short. And there are several outstanding issues that remain to be resolved.”
Failure to strike an agreement would be “a missed opportunity for which future generations may not forgive us”, he said.
Tedros said all countries needed the capacity to detect and share pathogens presenting a risk, and timely access to tests, treatments and vaccines.
He called for a “strong agreement that will help to protect our children and grandchildren from future pandemics”.
Tedros said claims that the accord would cede sovereignty to the WHO or give it the power to impose lockdowns and vaccine mandates were “completely false”.
“We cannot allow this historic agreement, this milestone in global health, to be sabotaged.”
WHO member states decided in December 2021 to create a new international instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, aimed at ensuring the flaws that turned Covid-19 into a global crisis could never happen again.
The WHO emergencies director, Michael Ryan, reminded countries how the pandemic “ripped apart our social, economic and political systems and became a multi-trillion dollar problem”.
In the midst of major geopolitical conflicts, “this is one thing the world agrees on”, he said.
Roland Driece, who is co-chairing the negotiations, said the project had condensed a seven-year process into two years.
He said the accord should be ambitious, innovative and with clear commitments.
On the disagreements, he said European countries wanted more money invested in pandemic prevention, while Africa wanted the knowledge and financing to make that work, plus proper access to pandemic “countermeasures” such as vaccines and treatments.
He said there were two sessions of two weeks left to do an “extreme” amount of work.
Parallel negotiations are also going on to reform the international health regulations (IHR), which many countries felt had been found badly wanting.
Under these, Tedros declared Covid-19 a public health emergency of international concern on 30 January 2020 – the highest level of alert available under the regulations.
But it was not until March 2020 when he described the worsening situation as a pandemic – a word that does not exist in the IHR vocabulary – that the world jolted into action, by which time the virus was already widespread.
Tedros declared an end to the international emergency in May 2023.
Ashley Bloomfield, the chief executive of New Zealand’s health ministry during the pandemic, is co-chairing the IHR negotiations.
Like Tedros, he criticised a “coordinated and sophisticated campaign” of misinformation and disinformation attempting to undermine the process.
He said there were 300 proposed amendments to plough through during the talks.

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- A 14-year-old Fresno County boy appeared emotionless in juvenile court to face charges late Wednesday afternoon.
He sat in an orange sweater without handcuffs, just a few feet away from eight family members.
The boy, who Action News is not naming because of his age, is accused in a violent incident that left his parents, Lue Yang and Se Vang, dead and his 11-year-old sister critically injured last Wednesday night.
His 7-year-old brother was not hurt.
The husband and wife were at their Miramonte home with their three children that night when the 14-year-old called the sheriff's office about a home invasion.
He said somebody broke in with a gun and sped away in a silver pickup truck.
But when deputies arrived, they said the boy's story didn't line up, and he became a suspect.
Sheriff John Zanoni said the boy fabricated the whole thing.
It came as a shock to the rural community and to those at Dunlap Elementary School, where the suspect and his two siblings are students.
"Our mountain community is a tight-knit community. Dunlap School is a tight-knit school community, so anything that happens in the area affects everybody. Everybody cares for everybody, so what we've got to do is provide support for staff and students in a case like this, which is so tragic," explained Sergio Rodriguez, a student services administrator for Kings Canyon Unified.
Kings Canyon Unified School District has provided a phone number for families to access support services until school resumes on January 16th.
Rodriguez told Action News some families have already reached out. Dunlap Elementary is now getting ready for students to return from winter break later this month.
"We'll be sending extra staff up once school starts again. That grief team will be available in person, so if we have staff and students that need support, we'll be there for them," said Rodriguez.
As the community struggles to understand the tragedy, the district attorney's office has filed what's called a juvenile petition against the 14-year-old suspect.
Because he's under 16, the DA's office cannot charge him as an adult, and the exact charges are under seal.
Now, the juvenile court will hold what's similar to a criminal trial and determine if it has the authority or jurisdiction to sentence him to juvenile detention.
If that happens, the boy would be released by the time he's 25.

"I'm lost for words," said Poa Yang a spokesperson for the family killed. "This is not a Hmong incident, right?" said Yang. "This is an issue that we have across our nation that we need to address, and we need to get to the root cause of it. He's an American kid. Somebody that's respectful, and that's why they're shocked," said Yang. "They're shocked because they don't know what happened, and they want to get to the bottom of this."
So is the Fresno Community after a couple Lue Yang and Se Vang was killed in Miramonte.
Their 11-year-old daughter was hurt too.
The suspect? Their teenage son.
Fresno County Sheriff's Deputies said last week the 14-year-old boy called 9-1-1 saying an intruder came into his house and killed his parents and seriously hurt his 11-year-old sister.
Deputies questioned the boy because initially, he wasn't considered a suspect.
But detectives said his story quickly unraveled, and they determined he was lying to them.
The Fresno County District Attorney's Office has now charged the 14-year-old with murder.
But Criminal Psychologist Dr. Eric Hickey said crimes like this are more common than you think.
"It's not that uncommon to hear about these types of cases," he said.
Hickey said he has seen several cases similar to this in his career.
"It is a surprise, especially if you have a boy that's seemed to be a good boy," he said. "He's he's well, we see in the community, he's a good student, people like him."
FCSO said the boy used different weapons in the killings and attempted murder of his sister.
The only person in the house he didn't hurt was his 7-year-old brother.
"If multiple weapons were used, how were they used? Shooting somebody from a distance is actually different than stabbing somebody," said Hickey.
The family is asking for privacy and peace during this hard time in their lives.
"It's a process that no one wants to navigate, especially when you talk about funerals and then funerals for situations like this," said Yang. "Now three young minors are without parents for the rest of their lives."
Lue and Se did not have life insurance and now the family is struggling to find a way to cover not only funeral and cemetery costs, but also funds for the surviving children’s ongoing therapy treatments, medical visits, food, housing, and support for their well-being.

Damien Hernandez,18, Gianni Robinson, 17, Dontral Beaver, 16, and Treavion Randolph, 16 are each accused of second-degree murder in the fatal beating of 17-year-old Jonathan Lewis on Nov. 1.
Metro Police said the fight happened in a back alley near the Rancho High School campus and was set up by the teens after a pair of wireless headphones and possibly a marijuana vape pen were taken from either Lewis or a friend.
Prosecutors said Lewis was hit, kicked, and stomped to the point of unconsciousness. He died a week later in the hospital.
Defense attorneys claim self-defense for their clients. During a discovery status hearing in December, the defense attorney for Hernandez detailed how one of the teens involved, a friend of Lewis, had a knife.
Hernandez and Randolph waived their right to a speedy trial. Beaver and Robinson invoked their right.
Despite two defendants waiving their rights, Clark County District Judge Tierra Jones set a trial date of April 1 for all four teens. There is a status check scheduled for Feb. 22.
Hernandez is the only defendant out on bond. Five other teen defendants remain in the juvenile court system awaiting a certification hearing. Metro Police continue to look for a tenth person of interest in the case.

Defense attorneys for the defendants argued a $250K bail was not fair because some of the defendants kicked or hit Lewis more or less times than other defendants and the bail amount should reflect that.
The four teens are claiming self-defense because Lewis threw the first punch and a friend of Lewis’s allegedly had a knife, according to defense attorneys. Although the prosecutor conceded Lewis threw the first punch, the prosecutor added the punch didn’t warrant the violent attack that Lewis suffered. The prosecutor said six videos show the fight and will likely be used as evidence.
Judge Woods said she would issue a written order on bond next week for the defendants.
Although the four teens are in the adult court system, they are currently being held in the juvenile detention system for their safety. There are also five juveniles in the case that are awaiting adult certification. A 10th “person of interest” remains at large.
Lewis’ mother was in the courtroom and cried throughout the entire hearing.

A man suspected of killing eight people, most of whom were his relatives, in Chicago-area shootings died after turning a gun on himself following a confrontation with federal law enforcement, police say.
Romeo Nance, 23, was found Monday by US Marshals near Natalia, Texas – more than 1,000 miles from where seven victims were found shot to death Sunday in two homes in the south Chicago suburb of Joliet, according to the Joliet Police Department. Authorities believe Nance is also linked to a Sunday shooting in Will County, Illinois, that left a 28-year-old dead, Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans said Monday.
Nance shot himself with a handgun after being confronted by officials, police said.
Investigators have yet to determine Nance’s motive, but Nance was related to “if not all, a vast majority of the people” found dead in the homes, Evans said during a Tuesday news conference.
The victims have not been publicly identified. They range in age from 14 to 47 years old, Evans said.
In one residence, authorities found the bodies of two girls, aged 14 and 16, two women, aged 20 and 38, and a 38-year-old man, according to Evans. In the other residence, a 47-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man were found dead.
At a separate scene in Will County, deputies found a person “with blood coming out of his head, and upon deputy’s arrival, they located a gunshot wound,” Will County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief of Operations Dan Jungles said.
Jungles said the eighth victim, 28-year-old Toyosi Bakare, was taken to a hospital and died of his injuries. Bakare was from Nigeria and had been living in Will County, which includes Joliet, for three years, Jungles said.
“It is believed that the weapon used in this incident was a 9-millimeter handgun,” Jungles said in Tuesday’s news conference. He added robbery was not a motive as money was found in the area near where Bakare was located.
Nance’s car – a red Toyota Camry – was seen at the scene and the sheriff’s department began to surveil Nance’s last-known address, hoping to find the vehicle, Jungles said.
After no sign of Nance or his car, deputies knocked on the door of a home, but received no response, Jungle said at a news conference.
“When they received no response, they knew the house across the street was related to the individuals that resided at that house and they walked over there,” Jungle said.
At the second home, deputies saw blood on the door and entered to find two dead victims, he said. Five more victims were found in the first home, though it is unclear how long they had been dead, he said.
“I’ve been a policeman 29 years. This is probably the worst crime scene I’ve ever been associated with,” Evans said at the news conference.
Nance is also believed to be connected to another shooting on Sunday, according to authorities.

JOLIET, IL — The Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice issued a strongly worded press release on Thursday afternoon to correct what it says is significant misinformation circulating surrounding the mass murders in Joliet on Sunday.
“Tragedies are no time for politics, and it is inappropriate to trade on human sorrow to spread dangerous misinformation solely to score political points – and undermine policies that actually make our communities safer. Our hearts go out to all those impacted by these sad events,” declared Ben Rudell, ACLU of Illinois, a member of the Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice.
According to the statewide organization, Joliet mass murder defendant's Romeo Nance’s previous Will County arrests occurred prior to the enactment of the Pretrial Fairness provisions of the SAFE-T Act. His most serious charged offense was aggravated discharge of a weapon, and the Will County judge set a $100,000 bail in that case.
In March 2023 — two months after Nance's arrest and six months before the elimination of cash bond — someone paid the required 10 percent, which was $10,000, to free Nance from custody.
On Wednesday, Joliet Patch reported that Romeo Nance's now-21-year-old girlfriend, Kyleigh Cleveland, was responsible for posting his bond, falsely identifying herself on court documents as being his sister.
Under the old pretrial laws, the prosecution had no authority to request Nance be denied release, according to the Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice. Also, because aggravated discharge is a probationable offense, Nance was not eligible for detention at that time, regardless of how dangerous the judge believed Nance to be.
"This ensured he was given a money bond that could then be paid to secure his release," the organization explained.
Now, under the Pretrial Fairness Act, aggravated discharge is clearly listed as a charge for which release may be denied, the group announced in Thursday's press release. Nance was also facing several other weapons-related charges that were likewise previously ineligible for detention but are now detainable under the Pretrial Fairness Act.
"If Mr. Nance had been arrested while the Pretrial Fairness Act was in effect, the prosecution could have requested his detention and the court could have granted it. In at least one media report, a judge decried his inability to detain Nance’s girlfriend Kyleigh Cleveland-Singleton, who has been charged with obstructing justice," the Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice declared.
The social justice group further explained, "unlike Nance, Ms. Cleveland-Singleton’s charge does require she be released and given an initial opportunity to succeed while awaiting trial and presumed innocent. Cleveland-Singleton has not been accused of any violence, her offense is the lowest class of felony, and she is caring for a 3-year-old son who just lost numerous members of his family to violence. Importantly, the old money bond system also did not allow judges to deny someone release for obstruction of justice, a non-violent Class 4 felony."
Before the Pretrial Fairness Act took effect, Cleveland-Singleton would have been ordered released — either with or without payment of a money bond, the group pointed out.
"The court now retains the power to set numerous conditions of release that do not involve paying money. And though Ms. Cleveland-Singleton was ordered released today, she must remain on electronic monitoring. Moving forward, should Ms. Cleveland-Singleton violate the conditions of her pretrial release, the court has the power to take her into custody."

TINLEY PARK, Ill. - A father has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his three daughters and wife inside a home in Tinley Park on Sunday.
Maher Kassem, 63, was charged Tuesday with four counts of first-degree murder, according to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. At his initial court appearance, prosecutors said an argument led to Kassem using two guns first to shoot his wife and then, after stepping over her body, his three daughters.
The victims were identified as Majeda Kassem, 53; twins Halema Kassem, 25; and Hanan Kassem, 25; and Zahia Kassem, 24.
Officials said Kassem shot his wife, Majeda, seven times, and each daughter was shot twice. The Kassems' 19-year-old son was in the home but was not physically injured. The women's bodies were found in the basement.
Authorities also said Kassem was cooperative with police and admitted to the shooting. Kassem indicated the fight started over the family's finances.
Prosecutors said the shooting took place after an argument on Sunday morning between the father and one of his daughters. That prompted his wife and two other daughters to get involved and urge him to calm down.
CBS 2 first reported Monday that there was a witness to the crime. That witness was identified in court as Maher Kassem's 19-year-old son.
Amid all the yelling, the son – who was sleeping then – woke up and went to see what was going on. He would later hear gunshots and first found his mother and two of his sisters fatally shot. He walked in moments before his father shot the third daughter.
Police said the father never turned the gun toward his son.
Around 11:20 a.m. Sunday, police responded to a report of the shooting in the 7400 block of West 173rd Street.
Village Manager Pat Carr said a male - who police later said was Kassem - made a 911 call saying someone was shot in the residence, and and police found his wife and three daughters dead at the scene. Police recovered two guns at the scene.
When police asked Kassem where his family was, prosecutors said, "The defendant pointed in the direction of the basement. The officer asked the defendant who else was there, and the defendant stated, 'They're gone.'"
Prosecutors said Kassem appeared to be disgruntled over how he was treated at home.
"The defendant was recorded volunteering things about having just retired, and that 'She treats me like a [expletive] dog," said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Scott Clark. "'I worked 40 years.' and 'I worked all my life to give my family a better home, and they treat me like [expletive].'"
Police said there had been no record of police interaction at the home.
Meanwhile, hundreds of mourners gathered at the Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview for a prayer in honor of the four women who were killed in what police called a senseless act of domestic violence, something they hope is addressed more in the community.
"It's about not only mental illness but control and abuse," said Fida Zoubeidi, who attended the prayer service. "We need to keep our eyes open."
Funeral services for the women were held Tuesday night. Mourners gathered one by one for a vigil – hours after the mother and three adult sisters were buried.
Hanan Kassem had recently graduated from St. Xavier University with a master's degree in speech therapy.
"I would say that she lit up a room - you know, like you could talk to her about anything," said classmate Corinna Olsen.
Olsen wished she could talk to her friend one more time. Instead, she and so many are puzzled by the circumstances of the quadruple murder.
"Very, very shocking," said Olsen. "You know, expect this to happen to someone you know."
Off camera, the nephew of Maher Kassem said the family is torn – shocked at the crime his uncle is accused of committing against a family for which he seemed to care so deeply.
The nephew added that the family does not know the man prosecutors portray as having committed such a crime. He said before Sunday, his uncle would have done anything for his family.
Kassem will be due back in court on Feb. 16.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police conducted a welfare check at a northwest-side apartment complex when they found an elderly man dead and his wife seriously injured after their son allegedly beat them with a bowl.
Police on the scene said the individuals didn't answer the door or their cell phones when Home Health Care came to check on them. They were able to enter the unit with help from maintenance.
When they got inside the apartment, police said, officers found an 85-year-old man dead in the hallway and his 74-year-old wife severely beaten with head trauma, fractures and a bloody face. They said the wife had locked herself in a room after being attacked.
As police were checking the apartment, they found the couple's 45-year-old son, James Barber, playing video games in one of the rooms and handcuffed him. Police said he appears to have mental health issues.
A member of Barber's extended family told KENS 5 Saturday the man did have a history with serious mental illness and had been divorced since 2018. The person said Barber only recently moved back with his parents.
The wife was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Before she left the scene, SAPD said, she told officers Barber had beaten them with a ceramic bowl and killed his father Thursday night, nearly 20 hours after police discovered them.
Barber remains jailed on murder and aggravated assault charges, his bonds totaling $400,000.

I'm sharing this article below titled, "Putin and the Jews" for the Russian Putin history information it provides. I learned a lot of new information from this article that was quite eye opening for me. I had no idea that Putin was practically raised by Jewish people who meant so much to him. A year after his invasion of Ukraine, Vladimir Putin is a pariah in the West, shunned as a warmonger who brought conflict back to the heart of Europe for the first time since
World War II.
But away from the news, world leaders are often more complex and multifaceted than you might assume; Putin is a good example of a person who isn’t simple to read or perhaps purely evil.
On the occasions I met him, I found Putin to be a shrewd and seemingly smart man, and unexpectedly receptive to hearing our perspectives.
Our first meeting was in 1998, when he was head of the KGB, and I traveled to Moscow to pressure the Russians to stop selling dual-use technology to Iran that could be valuable in their ballistic missile program.
It was a time of political turmoil in the twilight of President Boris Yeltsin’s term, and Viktor Chernomyrdin was prime minister — one of four officials to occupy the office between 1998 and 1999.
Chernomyrdin had been in charge of Russian gas giant Gazprom — a major component of the country’s economy — before becoming prime minister.
We had an intense exchange with Chernomyrdin, and in the end, he promised, almost mockingly, to provide the executive order to block the technology transfer. But afterward, the order wasn’t forthcoming.
Vice President Al Gore’s chief aide, Leon Firth, was in Moscow for the same purpose. He sent my delegation to the Ministry of Technology, where the minister was obviously briefed on the subject, and began our discussion by saying, “Here are your questions, and here are our answers.”
When he’d finished, I stated that a nuclear Iran was a threat to Russia as well as the US or Israel. Unexpectedly, a man in uniform present at the briefing jumped in with the same analysis, doubling down on our concerns.
He noted that only Russia and Israel faced challenges of terrorism both inside and outside their borders. It seemed clear he was very well-informed about global politics. We were impressed, and at that point I interjected that he had not been introduced to us.
“I’m Vladimir Putin,” he replied. “I’m the head of the KGB.”
A silent gasp went through the room as he pronounced those words. But we quickly regained our equilibrium, and continued speaking for over an hour. We engaged in some sparring, but Putin was essentially in agreement with us. When he concluded speaking, I was able to raise the dangers of a nuclear Iran to Russia, the US, and Israel, noting the presence of a large Muslim population in Russia that could be influenced and subverted by Iran, and the strategic considerations.
At the end, office staff came in bearing vodka and canapes. I rustled papers and tried to lay low, as I didn’t wish to partake, but Putin slammed a shot glass on the table in front of me and poured for me.
“You are going to drink with me!” he said sternly.
After drinking the vodka, I took a deep breath.
“General, this is very strange for me,” I said. “The last time I had any dealings with the KGB, I was arrested.”
(That’s a story for another time, but after that arrest I was banned from the USSR for the next 25 years.)
Putin asked when and where that was. I told him it was in 1971, in Moldova.
Putin grinned, and showed a flash of sharp humor. “That’s why we got rid of it,” he quipped, referring to Moldova’s declaration of independence from the former USSR in 1991.
The following morning, to everyone’s surprise, I received the executive order at my hotel in Moscow blocking the sale of the technology to Iran, and sent it on to Vice President Gore’s assistant, who was trying to secure it.
The next time I saw Putin was about a year later, at a reception at the White House. I saw his eyes scanning the room, like a good KGB officer, and he spied me.
He wagged a finger at me. “Moldova!” he mouthed from across the room.
Putin's Shuls
At least on the surface, Putin expresses a positive attitude toward Jews.
He once warned Arafat that an attack on Israel would be an attack on Russia, since there are a million of his citizens living there.
He told me several times about the Jewish family that shared an apartment with his family while he was growing up in Moscow. It was the parents of the Jewish family, not his own parents, who made sure he got out to school in the mornings.
He considered his Jewish high school wrestling coach to be a father figure to him, and had such good feelings for his Jewish high school German teacher, who showed him special care, that he bought her an apartment in Tel Aviv in 2005. The woman has since passed away, but Putin still owns the apartment.
And, of course, he has close ties to many of Russia’s Jewish oligarchs and to Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar.
Putin was able to use his good relationship with Russia’s Jewish community to boost his country’s economy.
In 2005, Putin met with President George W. Bush at the APEC summit in South Korea. One of the things he wanted from the Americans was to cancel the application of the Jackson-Vanik Amendment to Russia. Jackson-Vanik was an amendment to the 1974 Trade Act that denied permanent trading rights to countries with non-market economies (e.g., Communist countries) that restricted emigration and other human rights.
At the time it was passed, the intention was to pressure the Soviet Union to allow its Jews to emigrate, and it proved to be an effective tool.
Bush told him that if the American Jewish community agreed to repeal the amendment, he would go along with it.
In the wake of the summit, Putin told me, “It’s time to end Jackson-Vanik. I already let all the Jews leave Russia, and the ones who didn’t leave are my friends. I do everything for the Jews — I open shuls, I open mikvehs…”
“The only thing I don’t do,” he said with a laugh, “is a bris!”
He then recounted his exchange with President Bush in Japan, asking for exemption, as had been granted other countries.
We responded that as long as there were no restrictions on Jewish emigration from Russia, we’d approve rescinding the trade restrictions, but not cancel the Act itself, so that it could be kept in reserve. What happened in practice is that the act was dissolved gradually.
At the end of our meeting with him, Putin told us he had kept the generals waiting because of our meeting. We saw the “generals” as we left — they were the bosses of US industrial giants General Motors and General Electric.
Imperial Plans
As the Ukraine war shows, Putin now wants to reassert Russia’s sphere of influence and has designs on the former Soviet Union countries. While he can’t reconstruct the USSR after its dissolution, he would like to exercise control over the former territories.
His campaign to restore Russia’s regional influence has been facilitated by Western weakness, first in Georgia in 2008, and again in Crimea in 2014, when Russia initiated a conflict and both Europe and the Unites States largely stood by.
His bold use of force has enabled Russia to project power despite having an economy only the size of Italy’s — and, without oil production, the size of the Netherlands’.
In the case of Ukraine, which he considers his backyard, Putin views the country’s potential membership in NATO as a direct assault on Russia’s security.
Clearly, Putin overestimated what he could accomplish in Ukraine, perhaps believing he could replicate the Crimea experience. His military has been lying about how many soldiers they have lost. So far it seems his calculations were not rooted in reality, and he and his country are paying a heavy price.
Israel’s good relationship with Putin puts it in a challenging position when it comes to Ukraine. Israeli planes face Russian jets and antiaircraft systems every time they bomb Iranian missile shipments in Syria, or Hezbollah in Lebanon.
So, Russia’s presence in the region, as well as the large Jewish population still remaining in the country — many of whom are uneasy about their future — must be taken into consideration with respect to Israeli policy making on Ukraine. As Israel seeks to balance those concerns alongside the wish to demonstrate concern for Ukraine, Russia has taken some retaliatory steps, such as limiting the activities of the Jewish Agency.
Over the years, Putin has treated Jewish and Israeli concerns with respect and has showed an openness to dialogue.
But, as shown by the Ukraine war and the Kremlin’s subsequent crackdown on civil society, Putin’s aspirations and designs, and the methods of running his country with an iron fist, are forces to be reckoned with.
Jews always do better in democracies long-term. They need societies with law and order, freedom of religion, and authorities who stand against anti-Semitism.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), an international Jewish NGO, refused to condemn the Pentagon's honoring of a veteran of the Azov Battalion who dons Nazi-inspired tattoos.
An email dated November 9 sent by the ADL to The Grayzone, an investigative journalist website, stressed that it does not view the Azov as the “far-right group it once was.”
Founded by Andriy Biletsky, who vowed to “lead the white races of the world in a final crusade…against Semite-led Untermenschen,” the group is a pack of neo-Nazis working with the US-backed Ukrainian military.
It used to be condemned and labeled with Nazism all over it by Western media and the human rights industry - until the war in Ukraine in February 2022. Azov became the Ukrainian military’s defense of Mariupol, and Western media became suddenly inspired to rebrand Azov as a "misunderstood freedom fighter" and use the Kremlin as the anti-thesis.
The ADL seemed to turn a blind eye when Azov used civilians as human shields and executed those who tried to escape. Back in March, the ADL recognized the unit in a report it published, that white nationalists view Azov “as a pathway to the creation of a National Socialist state in Ukraine.” ๐ [That's not a democracy nor is it a free society?! Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler who was the leader of the National Socialist Nazi party. (emphasis mine)]
In August, Russia's Supreme Court designated Ukraine's Azov Battalion as a terrorist organization.
Email response from the ADL
After The Grayzone provided the ADL with evidence that Pentagon was harboring a neo-Nazi group, the ADL responded, and offered this defense instead: “When it was created in 2014, the Azov Brigade was a private military group fighting the then annexation of Crimea. During this period, it was a group that had a clear far-right influence.
"In late 2014, the group was brought in as a part of the Ukrainian National Guard and renamed the Azov Regiment. When this happened, the Ukrainian government investigated the group and claims to have expelled it of these far-right members.
"It was also during this time that its founder Andriy Biletsky left AZOV and has since worked in the greater Azov movement, including founding a far-right political party, the National Corps. In essence, there was a split between the military unit AZOV and the political goals of its founding members. Of course, this is not to say that they have successfully removed all far-right elements from their ranks, but our Center on Extremism also does not see Azov Regime as the far-right group it once was.”
In the same email, the ADL claimed that “the military unit AZOV and the political goals of its founding members split” in 2014, stressing that Biletsky “left Azov and has since worked in the great Azov movement, including founding a far-right political party, the National Corps.” However, the ADL noted no such “split” in 2019 when they labeled the National Corps as the “political wing of Azov.”
A researcher for the US government-sponsored Bellingcat outlet explained in the NATO-affiliated Atlantic Council in 2020 that Azov “routinely hosts Biletsky (and other former commanders) at its bases and welcomes his participation in ceremonies, greeting him as a leader.”

A November 9 email from the Anti-Defamation League to The Grayzone provided a twisted defense of Ukraine’s Azov Battalion. Despite its self-proclaimed “anti-hate” mission, the ADL insisted in the email it “does not” consider Azov as the “far right group it once was.”
The Azov Battalion is a neo-Nazi unit formally integrated into the US government-backed Ukrainian military. Founded by Andriy Biletsky, who has infamously vowed to “lead the white races of the world in a final crusade…against Semite-led untermenschen,” Azov was once widely condemned by Western corporate media and the human rights industry for its association with Nazism. Then came the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
In the months that immediately followed, Azov led the Ukrainian military’s defense of Mariupol, the group’s longtime stronghold. As the militia assumed a frontline role in the war against Russia, Western media led a campaign to rebrand Azov as misunderstood freedom fighters while accusing its critics of echoing Kremlin talking points. The New York Times has even referred to the unit as the “celebrated Azov Battalion.”
Like the Washington Post and other mainstream outlets, the ADL ignored Azov’s atrocities this April in Mariupol, where locals accused the group of using civilians as human shields and executing those who attempted to flee. One video out of Mariupol showed Azov fighters proudly declaring the Nazi collaborator and mass murderer of Jews, Stepan Bandera, to be their “father.”
“Boneface” boasts a lengthy arrest record in the US, including an incident in which he was filmed by an undercover government informant participating in paramilitary training with the American Front neo-Nazi organization. According to prosecutors, the group was planning “to kill Jews, immigrants and other minorities.”
In the November interview, Boneface admitted to taking photographs of Ukrainian fighters “posing with the corpses of a lynched pregnant woman and a man they said was her husband” for a video entitled “Kikes get the rope.” He also claimed to have appeared in a video depicting a botched crucifixion.
But Boneface’s comments on the prevalence of neo-Nazis within the ranks of Azov offer the clearest refutation of the ADL’s assertion that the battalion is “no longer the far-right group it once was.”
“There is a ton of liberal white washing when it comes to Fascists in Ukraine,” McLellan said, rattling off popular talking points: “Nazis don’t exist”; “Azov battalion and Azov regiment are different”; “They took all the Nazis out of Azov.”
“I speak out against the white washing of Nationalists by the media,” he added. “I use Twitter to mainly troll the (western) left, as they believe Ukraine[‘s] military isn’t full of nationalist ideals.”
Is the ADL as credulous as the rest of Ukraine flag-waving liberal America when it asserts that Azov has been de-radicalized? Or are they just trolling us too?
