Man stabbed with butcher's knife at Gare du Midi

At around 09:30 on Tuesday, a man was stabbed with a butcher's knife at Gare du Midi in Brussels. The attacker was subdued by an off-duty member of the French police force. The victim was taken to hospital and is not believed to be in a critical situation.

The French-speaking news outlet RTL reported that the attacker had started screaming in the station before stabbing the victim who was left with blood "on his face and on his hands." A Frenchman, who works as a police officer in his native country, subsequently intervened and tackled the man to the ground.

The French policeman, who has opted to remain anonymous, stated to RTL that he feared for the worst after the victim was stabbed in the neck. After witnessing the first attack, he decided to immediately spring into action by "subduing the attacker with the help of two security guards."

The assailant was subsequently handcuffed by the security guards and was later arrested by police reinforcements, while the victim is currently being treated at a hospital.

At the time of writing, the police has provided no further details on the circumstances behind the attack.

Earlier in the day the suspect walked into a police station in Brussels, making 'incoherent' statements about his hatred of the police. He was taken to a psychiatric unit for treatment but when police contacted the hospital later he had already left. He targeted two officers while they waited at a red light in a patrol vehicle. This is not the first time such an attack has taken place in Belgium. Between 2016 and 2018 Belgium saw several fatal Islamist terror attacks against the police or military. A Belgian police officer was killed in a knife attack in Brussels on Thursday, authorities said, as anti-terror prosecutors took charge of the inquiry. Local media reported that an assailant stabbed two officers in the area close to the city's Brussels-North railway station before being shot in the legs and abdomen by another police patrol arriving at the scene.
