HONOLULU — CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a male who is wanted for Arson in the First Degree.
On Thursday, February 27, 2020, at approximately 8:15 p.m., an unknown male set the surfboard racks located behind the Waikiki Police Sub Station on fire. The fire caused damages to the surfboards, substation and nearby hotel.
The blaze damaged an estimate of 525 boards, including the surfboards owned by Jodi Mayo. Mayo said one of his boards cost him about $3,000 but he said his connection to it was priceless.
“It’s an irreplaceable board I had it specifically shaped by one of the legends in Japan and you can’t replace it,” Mayo said. “No words, everyone has their magic board, it’s not there, it’s gone.”
A cleaning contractor worked on Friday to remove the ash and soot left from the blaze. Anthony Debold with Restoration Hawaii said crews wore hazmat suits and damped down the area to prevent toxins from flying onto bystanders.
Debold said, “We got different toxins in there fiber glass, foam everything that burns accelerant like that we just need to make sure that everybody is protected and safe.”
