Police: Oklahoma man beheaded former co-worker and attacked another just after his firing

A man who had just been fired by an Oklahoma City-area food processing plant allegedly severed the head of one of his former co-workers and attacked another before being shot by the company’s chief operating officer, according to police.

The suspect — 30-year-old Alton Nolen — walked into the front office of the Vaughan Foods processing plant in Moore after his firing Thursday and attacked employee Colleen Hufford, Moore Police Sgt. Jeremy Lewis said in a statement.

Nolen attacked Hufford with a knife and severed her head, the statement said. “Yes, she was beheaded,” Lewis confirmed to the Associated Press.

Nolen was attacking a second woman at the plant — 43-year-old Traci Johnson — when, Lewis said, he was shot by Mark Vaughan, a top executive at Vaughan Foods who is also a reserve deputy with the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Department.

“This was not going to stop if he didn’t stop it,” Lewis said Friday. “It could have gotten a lot worse.”

Nolen was hospitalized and police are waiting until he is conscious to arrest him, according to the AP. Lewis did not know what charges would be filed, the AP reported.

According to the police statement, after interviewing Nolen’s former co-workers, “information was obtained that he recently started trying to convert several employees to the Muslim religion.”

“Due to the manner of death and the initial statements of co-workers and other initial information, the Moore Police Department requested the assistance of the FBI in conducting a background investigation.”

Two federal law enforcement officials told The Post that Nolen is a recent convert to Islam.

One of the federal officials called Nolen’s Facebook page “provocative,” saying it included a photo of Osama bin Laden. A Facebook page appearing to be Nolen’s includes a wide range of photos, including one depicting a beheading and another of Omar al-Shishani, a prominent Islamic State fighter who is Chechen.

But the FBI, which is assisting in the investigation, has so far found no links to terrorism, the officials said. There was also no indication that Nolen was copying the beheadings of journalists in Syria by the Islamic State, the officials said, adding that they are treating this as an incident of workplace violence.

According to Oklahoma Department of Corrections records, Nolen has multiple tattoos that appear to be religious in nature, including an abdominal tattoo of an Arabic greeting that translates to “peace be with you.” The suspect also has a tattoo across his chest pertaining to “Jesus Christ,” and a “praying hands” arm tattoo.

Nolen was convicted in 2011 on drug charges and for assaulting a police officer. When Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Betsy Randolph attempted to arrest him on outstanding warrants during a 2010 traffic stop, Nolen escaped and fled into the woods, News OK reported.

His escape from detention led to a 12-hour manhunt, until he was eventually captured. Nolen spent two years in the Oklahoma prison system, according to Department of Corrections records.

Lewis said Nolen “became angry” after his firing and went to the Vaughan Foods parking lot, then drove to the front of the business, where he hit another vehicle. Nolen, Lewis said, then entered the building, where he encountered Hufford and allegedly attacked her.

Lewis said he didn’t know why Nolen was fired, according to the AP, and a statement from Vaughan Foods made no direct mention of Nolen.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the team member we lost and all those affected,” company spokeswoman Danielle Katcher said in the statement. “Our focus is on the safety and well-being of our employees. We will provide counseling and support for our team members and support each other through this difficult time.”

The knife used in the attack, Lewis said, was the same kind used by workers at the plant, according to NBC affiliate KFOR.

In a statement, Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel called Vaughan a “hero,” saying: “There is every reason to believe that the lives of untold others were saved who would have been targeted by the suspect if it hadn’t been for Deputy Vaughan’s actions.”

The Moore Police Department says charges filed against Alton Alexander Nolen will include first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

The FBI said there are no indications linking Thursday’s attack to terrorism. [Seriously? Alton Nolen's Facebook Page Depicted Beheading a Month Before Release from Probation

Alton Nolen, the man authorities believe is responsible for a brutal beheading in Moore, Oklahoma Thursday, posted an image which seemed to justify beheading on his Facebook page earlier this year.

Nolen posted on Facebook under the name Jah’Keem Yisrael. Over the past year, most of his posts deal with Islam. He writes short statements which are signed off with the phrase “****InfoFromAMuslim****.”

On March 7th, Nolen added an image to his Timeline which shows a partially decapitated man with someone standing over him pulling his head back to show the wound. Above the image there is a quote which reads, “Thus do we find the clear precedent that explains the peculiar penchantof Islamic terrorists to behead their victims: it is merely anotherprecedent bestowed by their Prophet.” Just below the image is a citation from the Quran, “I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off of them.”

The image is actually taken from a 2008 Power Point presentation. The Power Point, titled The Perfect Man, is intended to present a stark (and gruesome) contrast between Mohammed and Jesus on a number of issues, with the creators of the Power Point clearly favoring the latter. This slide is just one of several which feature severed heads.

The same day Nolen added the beheading photo he posted a photo to his timeline with which shows a black and white sign that reads: “Islam will Dominate the World: Freedom can go to hell.”

Finally, on the same day (March 7th) Nolen changed his cover photo to an image of jihadists holding rifles and rocket launchers. He wrote, “With killers and booom.”

A month after posting these photos, Nolen was released early from his probation for convictions he received in 2011. The probation was scheduled to end in 2017.

There are a number of other similar posts on Nolen’s Facebook page. On March 2nd, he posted a collage of Islamic women fighters. He wrote, “Some of my Muslim sisters… Its [sic] real in the Field when it comes down to God Allah the one and only and the Quran.” Another photo of male Islamic fighters has the caption, “Some of my Muslim Brothers!!!!!“

Reports have suggested that Nolen had sought to convert some of his fellow workers at Vaughn Foods. It’s clear from Nolen’s Facebook page that he did seek converts. On May 30th, he posted a photo of a young man holding his finger in the air. The caption beside the photo reads, “One whom was Guided to Islam 2day I offered him Dawah and he took his shahada!” Dawah is proselytizing and the shahada is the Muslim confession of faith.

In the following months, Nolen posted several photos of himself in prayer or spending time with other Muslims at the Oklahoma City mosque. His final post published Tuesday was a warning about the last days. He wrote (in all caps):

The extremist group Islamic State will drive the United States to its "death, grave and destruction," a spokesman for the militants declared in a recording that also called on Muslims living in the West to kill civilians.

"You will pay the price when this crusade of yours collapses, and thereafter we will strike you in your homeland, and you will never be able to harm anyone afterward," Abu Muhammad Adnani said in a 42-minute speech that both taunted and threatened the U.S.-led coalition combating the Islamic State.

"Mobilize your forces, roar with thunder, threaten whom you want, plot, arm your troops, prepare yourselves, strike, kill and destroy us,” he said in the recording released Sunday. "This will not avail you."

The speech called on Muslims in the West to kill civilians in so-called lone wolf operations planned and executed by a single person.

"Do not ask for anyone's advice and do not seek anyone's verdict," Adnani said. "Kill the infidel, whether he is civilian or military.”

Adnani also addressed the militant group’s fighters, who control much of eastern Syria and seized large swaths of Iraq during the summer. Their campaign in Iraq, marked by brutality toward captives, spurred the United States to offer air support to Iraqi and Kurdish forces.

"When you defend, you are like the firmest mountains. And when you attack, you are like predatory warriors," said Adnani, exalting the fighters as "knights and men of war."

At least one Algerian militant group responded to Adnani's call.

Jund al-Khilafah issued a video that mentions Adnani's speech and purports to show a kidnapped Frenchman, according to the SITE Intelligence Group's website. The militants said they would execute the hostage if the French government did not cease airstrikes it has been carrying out in support of the U.S.-led effort in Iraq.

Adnani's speech urged would-be militants to focus on killing Frenchmen.

"If you can kill a nonbelieving American or European, especially the spiteful and filthy French, or an Australian, or a Canadian ... then rely upon God," he said.
