DEHRADUN - Seventeen people, including two kids aged between 12 to 13 years, were killed and 33 others were injured on Sunday evening after a mini-truck carrying 50 people of a wedding party fell into a 10km deep gorge near Kaladungi town in Nainital district. Ten of those injured are in a critical state.

The truck fell into the gorge when the driver was negotiating a sharp bend. The 50 people were on their way back to Amroha in UP after the solemnization of the wedding at Barapatthar village in Nainital.

DIG (Kumaon range) GN Goswami said the accident occurred at 5.30pm as the driver of the speeding mini-truck lost control while taking a sharp turn and fell into the gorge after breaking the roadside parapet.

He said while 14 people were killed on the spot, three others succumbed to their injuries in Haldwani-based state medical college. "It was a providential escape for the bride and the groom as they were traveling in a separate vehicle and not in the ill-fated mini-truck," Goswami added.

"We are trying to give the best medical treatment to the injured and if needed we may shift the seriously-injured to the Jolly Grant hospital in Dehradun," chief medical superintendent in Haldwani medical college said.

Uttarakhand chief minister Vijay Bahuguna expressed shock over the accident and asked Nainital District Magistrate to pay an ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 each to the next of kin of those kiiled and Rs 20,000 each to those injured in the accident immediately.
