INDORE - Police have rescued a 15-year-old tribal girl after her father sold her to a youth for Rs 20,000 in Madhya Pradesh's Khandwa district.

Genda Lal had sold the girl to Chunni Lal (20) who later married her with the help of three people on May 28. Chunni Lal had later got a notary to certify the marriage after getting married to her at a temple.

The matter came to light after the girl's brother, Golu (21), returned from Punjab and found his sister missing. He later reported the matter to police.

"We recovered the girl from Chunni Lal's house on June 5, after which, based on the complaint by the girl, a case was registered against Genda Lal, Chunni Lal and three others," Harsud police station in-charge S L Soniya told TOI over phone.

The case has been registered under sections 370A (buying or selling anyone as slave), 363, 366 (abduction), 354 (molestation), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC and also under provisions of SC/ST Act. Two of the five accused, including Genda Lal and Chunni Lal, have been arrested, while the three others are still on the run.

Police said Chunni Lal had admitted to paying Genda Lal Rs 20,000 for the girl. But the father has denied selling off his daughter and instead justified the act saying that monetary exchanges during marriages were a part of the tribal customs.
