BUTTERWORTH - The Penang Immigration Department detained 49 illegal immigrants, including two children, in Batu Kawan and Machang Bubuk here early on Friday.
Its deputy director, Abdul Rahman Hassan, said the immigrants, aged between five and 50, were picked up during separate raids on two construction sites between midnight Thursday and 2am Friday.
He said during the first raid in Batu Kawan, 10 illegal workers were nabbed.
"They were believed to have worked at the housing development site in Batu Kawan and staying at the houses under construction there," he told reporters here.
Abdul Rahman said during the second raid in Machang Bubuk, 39 other illegal immigrants, including two women and two children aged five and seven, were detained.
"They were staying in the workers' quarters at the construction site," he said.
He said all of the immigrants, who entered the country from Indonesia, Myanmar and Bangladesh without valid travel documents, were then taken to the Immigration Detention Depot for further investigation under Section 6 (3) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 which carries a maximum jail term of five years, or fines not exceeding RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.
