KUALA LUMPUR: A strong earthquake, measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale, hit the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia, at 8.27am on Wednesday, and tremors were felt in peninsular Malaysia, the Malaysian Meteorological Department reported.
It said in a statement that the epicentre of the quake was 25km southeast of Simeulue and 547km southwest of Lumut, Perak.
It also said that tremors were felt in the west coast of peninsular Malaysia.
However, no tsunami threat was reported, it added. - Bernama
