According to Pakistani security officials, at least 20 people were killed on Friday following a suicide bomb blast in a Pakistani market close to the Afghan border.

The incident took place after a suicide bomber detonated his explosives Friday as he approached a police checkpoint, near a market in Khar, the main town of the Bajaur tribal district.

Abdul Haseeb local government administrator said, at least 5 security forces were among those killed following the explosion adding that an officer who had received an award for bravery in fighting Islamist militants was also among the security forces killed.

The explosion damaged more than a dozen shops. The ground outside the market was covered in blood and littered with the shoes of those hit by the attack.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which a spokesperson for the group said was aimed at Fazal Rabi, a security officer who was given a presidential award for his role in fighting the Taliban.
