Recently a North Carolina pre-schooler was forced to eat chicken nuggets from the cafeteria, rather than her turkey sandwich and apple juice. The school’s excuse was that the homemade lunch did not meet USDA requirements. Now a second mom at that school is speaking out, saying that the food police did the same thing to her daughter.
Diane Zambrano told her story on Fox and Friends this morning. She said she packed her daughter’s lunch like she does every day, and when she went to pick her up from school, Zambrano was given a flier explaining why her daughter wasn’t permitted to eat her lunch.
The principal of the school, Jackie Samuels, wrote in a memo to parents, “Students who do not bring a healthy lunch, will be offered the missing portions which may result in a fee from the cafeteria.”
This time the unacceptable lunch consisted of a salami and cheese sandwich on a wheat bun, and an apple juice. The girl’s lunch was substituted with chicken nuggets, sweet potatoes, a bun and milk. Her mother says that she only ate the sweet potatoes and took “a bite” of the chicken nuggets.
Zambrano told Steve Doocy what bothers her most is that the school “took it upon themselves to make the decision for me as a parent. We believe that we’re in a country where we’re allowed to [make] decisions for ourselves, and the fact that they take it away from us, what are they going to take away next?”
The school issued an apology to Fox and Friends, stating that “Hoke County Schools has taken appropriate action to safeguard against any repetition of these situations in the future.” Zambrano said she was never apologized to personally and plans to enroll her daughter in a private school next year.
