BEIJING: Two subway trains collided in China's commercial hub Shanghai injuring 260 people on Tuesday, with initial investigations pointing to signal failure as the cause. A similar snag in July this year had caused the superfast bullet train to crash, killing 40 people in Wenzou, in eastern China.

"Armed policemen were sent to the accident site to help evacuate passengers," said a Shanghai city government statement. The accident was first shown by citizen journalists over the internet. The official China central television followed with pictures from websites instead of its own footage.

The Shanghai metro company said more than 500 people were evacuated from the accident site. Nine stations were closed, it added. "Today is a dark day in the history of Shanghai Metro. We feel deeply sorry for the injuries and losses to passengers," said a statement from the metro operator . The operator offered an apology.
