JAKARTA - Eleven people were killed and 14 people were missing after a traditional boat sank off Indonesia's Bali island, a search and rescue agency official said on Wednesday.

'We are still searching for 14 missing people from the boat, which sank late Tuesday. Eleven people have been found alive,' Bali search and rescue agency head I Ketut Parwa told AFP.

He said the boat, which was carrying 36 passengers and crew members, left Nusa Lembongan island and was bound for Nusa Penida island, both south-east of Bali.

The Indonesian archipelago of more than 17,000 islands has a poor safety record, and fatal accidents are common. Up to 335 people were killed when a heavily overloaded ferry sank off Sulawesi island in January last year.
