(Reuters) - Top Mexican drug lord Ezequiel "Tony Tormenta" Cardenas died in a shootout with security forces on Friday in the border city of Matamoros across from Brownsville, Texas, Mexico's navy said.
Cardenas, brother of former Gulf cartel leader Osiel Cardenas, rose to become one of the leaders of the gang after his brother's extradition in 2007 to Texas.
A spokesman for Mexico's navy confirmed Cardenas' death in Matamoros, a Gulf cartel stronghold, on Friday but did not immediately have more details.
Terrified residents of the port city described an hours-long firefight between security forces and suspected drug hitmen via Twitter and YouTube videos.
Cardenas' death would be another success for President Felipe Calderon, who launched a crackdown on drug cartels on taking office in December 2006.
