Tehran - The Iranian-Canadian blogger Hossein Derakhshan might face the death sentence for having allegedly spied for Iran's arch-foe Israel, opposition websites reported Tuesday.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast neither denied nor confirmed the website reports in his weekly press briefing Tuesday.
The Iranian judiciary has not made any official statement on the Derakhshan case.
Derakhshan was arrested in November 2008 in Iran and has been detained since then.
One of the main charges against him was his 2006 visit to Israel, itself a serious crime in Iran as travelling to the Jewish state is explicitly forbidden.
The prosecutor has asked for the death sentence but the relevant judge has not yet approved it, according to website reports.
Mehmanparast said that as Iran did not acknowledge dual nationality, Derakhshan would be treated in court as an Iranian and not a Canadian national.
