Typhoon Conson that swept across the northern and eastern parts of the Philippines killed 33 people before moving out of the country Thursday on the way to southern China.

Reports quoting the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) and rescue officials said many people either drowned in sea or were hit by falling trees and debris. Thirty-three people, who were earlier reported missing, were found to be safe.

Nearly 10,000 people fled their homes in the main island of Luzon following heavy rains and strong winds.

Five major transmission lines in the region were disrupted. Blackout in provinces neighboring the capital Manila is to continue at least until Friday.

The weather bureau has downgraded Conson into a tropical storm, which is heading toward the South China Sea with maximum sustained winds of 95 kph and gusts of up to 120 kph.

Damage to infrastructure and agriculture costing half-a- million dollars was caused by Conson, the second typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.
