The HSUS, Humane Society International and partner organizations along with actress Kristin Bauer of HBO’s True Blood rallied on the National Mall today in Washington, DC in honor of Earth Day and whale protection.
Here's what you can do right now to help save whales:
Call President Obama at 202-456-1414, and urge him to immediately withdraw support for the dirty deal to allow commercial whaling. Tell him the Australian proposal deserves his support, instead.
Call Vice President Biden at 202-456-9000, and tell him the whales need him to weigh in and urge that the U.S. not lift the ban on commercial whaling.
Background
During the past year, selected members of the International Whaling Commission have been meeting to discuss the future of the IWC. Out of these closed-door meetings has come a package deal that, if approved, would suspend the 1986 commercial whaling moratorium for 10 years and would assign kill quotas to whaling nations, allowing them to hunt whales for commercial purposes, even in a sanctuary.
This proposal undermines the conservation mandate of the IWC, and it would be a grave mistake for the United States to support it. The U.S. must remain a leader in whale protection and oppose this potentially catastrophic sellout. The commercial whaling moratorium is the single most effective conservation achievement in place to protect whales — it should not now be thrown aside to appease three rogue whaling nations.
