94 people have been killed and over 100 injured following a deadly fire in a café in the Russian city of Perm, according to the Russian Emergency Ministry.

Most people died of smoke inhalation while they were trying to flee from the cafe, the source in emergency ministry was quoted by RIA Novosti news agency as saying.

”According to preliminary reports, panic, which happened due to fire in the building, lead to a crush at the entrance and those who remained inside died from the smoke,” the source told RIA Novosti.

The tragedy occurred while the café, named “Lamed Horse”, was celebrating its jubilee and most victims are reportedly people who worked at the café and their relatives.

According to Vladimir Markin, a spokesperson for Russia’s Investigation Committee, the fire was caused by fireworks used during the celebration.

Police and emergency crews are working at the scene in the city of Perm, located 1200 kilometers from Moscow.

Emergency Ministry head Sergey Shoigu, as well as the Minister of Health and Social Development Tatyana Golikova, are setting off for Perm to take part in an investigation and help the victims of the tragedy.

Accidents similar to the Perm explosion happened in the United States, said RT contributor Wayne Madsen.
