Four young men have been charged in connection with the horrific murder of a mother and the brutal attack on her daughter in New Hampshire.
MONT VERNON, N.H. (WBZ) ― Kim Cates was found dead in her bed. Her daughter Jaimie was found in the driveway with her throat slashed.
The first disturbing details in the case were revealed in Milford District Court Tuesday at their arraignments.
THE ATTACK
The group picked a home to rob at random and agreed that if they ran into anyone, they would kill them, prosecutors told the court.
Two of the men allegedly walked into 42-year-old Kimberly Cates' home on Trow Road in Mont Vernon Sunday morning and stabbed her multiple times in her bed.
Cates' 11-year-old daughter Jaimie was found outside the house with a head injury, her throat cut and a broken leg. [I read somewhere else that all her toe's were cut off too!]
She was rushed to Children's Hospital in Boston, where she spent six hours in surgery Sunday. She remains in stable condition in intensive care.
THE ARRESTS
Early Tuesday morning, police announced the arrests of four people: 17-year-old Steven Spader, 19-year-old Christopher Gribble, 18-year-old William Marks, and 17-year-old Quinn Glover.
Gribble is accused of cutting Cates' head, torso, arms and legs with a knife.
Prosecutors say Spader drove the four to the house and cut Cates with a machete.
Spader and Gribble are charged with first-degree murder, in the death of Kimberly Cates; attempted murder, in connection with the attack on her daughter; and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.
Marks and Glover are charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, and armed robbery.
It's not clear yet why they were not charged in the murder.
All four were arraigned separately under orders from the judge, who did not want the four together at any point while in custody.
An autopsy determined that Cates died from "multiple sharp injuries to the head, torso, left arm, and left leg."
THE FAMILY
Neighbors say Cates was a nurse who worked part-time at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua and Milford Medical Center.
She lived in the home with her husband, David, and their daughter.
David Cates, a military contractor, was in Maryland on a business trip. He returned Sunday to be with his daughter at the hospital.
