I just received this information from one of my readers. This is unbelievable folks!!! Our government is giving away cell phones, service and minutes to low-income citizens using our HARD EARNED TAXPAYER DOLLARS!!! What, is our government going to start giving away cars now too!!!
Having a cell phone is NOT A RIGHT! If you can't afford a cell phone, then you obviously will not have one. Why does everybody feel they deserve ENTITLEMENTS! A cell phone is a luxury. Besides, there are several charitable organizations that ALREADY DONATE USED cell phones to those in need. Virgin Mobile for example asks their customers to recycle their used cell phones so they can give them to homeless teenagers. Our government has made it their duty to USE PUBLIC FUNDS (taxpayer dollars) for charitable contributions. The PRIVATE SECTOR is responsible for helping out their neighbors in need NOT the government! We, as individuals should be the ones to DECIDE how and to whom we would like to DONATE our hard earned money to NOT the government! These EARMARKS have to be STOPPED!

I love how some people refer to the Safelink program as "an Obama phone."
WTF?
The program's been in effect for 25 years and finally recognizes the reality of cell phones as a viable option for communication.
And the phones themselves are cheap, low-end devices, but the right wing echo chamber rails against this because of the perception that cell phones are somehow "luxuries."
Crazy.
I didn't have a problem with the so-called "Obama Phone."
It seemed reasonable to give poor people a cheap phone and a few minutes a month.
Go find a job. Go to the doctor. Get the car fixed. Whatever.
But now, Virgin Mobile has a new program that gives poor people 200 minutes a month.
FREE!
It's too much!
What's next? Iphones? Blackberries?
Virgin is using taxpayer money extravagantly.

@Ali Blabber, I don't have a problem assisting the poor. A phone is a necessity. However, it is NOT a right. Everybody does NOT have a right to a cell phone.
As I mention in this piece, there are several NON-PROFIT CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS that provide cell phones and minutes to homeless children and the poor.
Oh and by the way, I am NOT a right wing republican!!! I am a former democrat turned INDEPENDENT.
@EnufZNuf, Virgin Mobile is NOT THE GOVERNMENT. Virgin Mobile has always provided USED cell phones to homeless kids. Now they're providing them with minutes.
The USED cell phones come from their customers who send them to Virgin Mobile to RECYCLE and pass them out. The FREE MINUTES are paid for by Virgin Mobile. They are NOT USING TAXPAYER MONEY.
Most corporations have a charitable foundation. Look it up or take a business class to understand how this works.
Just an FYI: When we pay our federal taxes, that money goes into the treasury tax revenue fund. Our government is supposed to use that money to pay for expenses that the Nation will benefit equally. NOT FOR A SELECT FEW! That is why I am so against the EARMARKS (special interest) spending.
That federal tax income is supposed to be used for the OVERALL GOOD.
Our country has so many non-profit CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS that you and I can choose from to make our charitable contributions from our very own pocket. We don't NEED the government to take our money from our paychecks and then they decide who the money goes to!?
