AGI) - Rangoon, 31 August - Aung San Suu Kyi will soon be having re-building work done on her house on the outskirts of Yangon, the ancient Burmese capital formerly known as Rangoon.

The building work will not be mere decoration, but to prevent the repetition of the intrusion by strangers. The successful bid made by US citizen John William Yettaw, a Mormon preacher, last May, led to an eighteen-month extension to Aung San Suu Kyi's period of house arrest.

The proposal by the Burmese opposition leader has been announced by her lawyer, Nyan Win, who is the spokesperson for the LND, the National League for Democracy, which Suu Kyi leads. The 64-year-old dissident has already been in contact with an architect and will pay the costs out of her own pocket.

There will be a series of repairs to a terrace, perhaps the one used by Yettaw to enter the modest villa where Suu Kyi has spent fourteen of the past eighteen years in seclusion. According to Win, the works are still in the planning stage.

"'Daw' Aung San Suu Kyi is concerned about the security of her property", the spokesperson said. "Which is why she wants these repair works. In order to prevent unwanted intrusions".

Suu Kyi is therefore not placing all her trust in the armed guards who surround the house, even though their presence has been strengthened since the intruder managed to slip through them.
