On June 9, 2011, Senators Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) introduced the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 1176) to end the cruel slaughter of American horses for human consumption and their export to other countries for that purpose. Every year, approximately 100,000 American horses are crammed onto trailers and shipped across U.S. borders into Canada and Mexico, where they are slaughtered with inhumane methods, and then shipped overseas to wind up on plates in Europe and Asia where horsemeat is considered a delicacy. Just a week later, the U.S. House of Representatives approved its Agriculture Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2012, including language prohibiting the funding for USDA inspection of horsemeat and horses for slaughter, in order to prevent the cruel practice of horse slaughter from resuming in the United States.

TAKE ACTION

Please make a brief, polite phone call to your two U.S. Senators, urging cosponsorship of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 1176) and letting them know that you don't want taxpayers footing the bill for horse slaughter. They need to hear from you now because the horse slaughter industry is trying to convince Congress that taxpayers should fund inspections of horsemeat and horses for slaughter. Look up your two U.S. Senators' phone numbers.

Then, use the form below to send a follow-up note. We encourage you to add your own thoughts or comments about horse slaughter in the editable portion, so your U.S. Senators know how important this issue is to you personally.
