Multinational seed corporations are following a consequent strategy to gain control over basic resources for food production. As recent research shows not only genetically engineered plants, but more and more the conventional breeding of plants gets into the focus of patent monopolies: International patent applications in this sector are skyrocking, having doubled since 2007 till end of 2009. Further on the multinationals expand their claims over the whole chain of food production from feed to animals and food products such as meat. In a pending patent application from Monsanto even bacon and steaks are claimed: Patent application WO2009097403 is claiming meat stemming from pigs being fed with the patented genetically engineered plants of Monsanto. A similar patent is applied for fish from aquaculture in March 2010 (WO201027788). Far reaching patents on food are even already granted: Monsanto received a European patent (EP 1356033) in 2009, which the chain of food production from seeds of genetically engineered plants up to food products such as meal and oil are covered.
There is a process going on, multinationals are trying to gain increasing control of the whole chain of food production. Consumers, farmers and food producers are all caught by the same trap. This has to be regarded as an immoral attempt to abuse patent law. The company is heading for maximising its profits by filing patents on food while at the same time one billion people are suffering from hunger," says Franรงois Meienberg from the Berne Declaration.
As experience from the US shows, patents on seeds and increasing market concentration are leading to drastic increase in seed prices, reduced choice in seeds and soaring dependencies for farmers. Meanwhile the Department of Justice and state attorneys general in several US states are investigating whether Monsanto Company has abused its market power to lock out competitors and raise prices in seeds. The coalition of 'No Patents on Seeds is warning that market concentration will even increase if the abuse of patent law is not stopped. The coalition is supported globally by more than 200 organisations. The organisations are demanding a clear change in policy and practise of patent offices. Governments are urged to to revise the patent laws in order to exclude patents on seeds, animals and parts thereof.

Aspartame producer Ajinomoto chose to rebrand it under the name AminoSweet, to "remind the industry that aspartame tastes just like sugar, and that it's made from amino acids -- the building blocks of protein that are abundant in our diet."
This is deception at its finest: begin with a shred of truth, and then spin it to fit your own agenda.
In this case, the agenda is to make you believe that aspartame is somehow a harmless, natural sweetener made with two amino acids that are essential for health and present in your diet already.

Our Political Leaders NEED A Little Friendly Reminder: I Submit To You The United States of America ~ Declaration of Independence!
I want for you to think about this for a moment. Why do think people are still flocking into the United States from other countries? Many are even risking their lives to get a taste of the FREEDOM many of us take for granted. Why do you think? Because they are leaving behind oppressive governments and undesirable living conditions. The United States may not be perfect. Nevertheless, we are still much better off than any other nation on this planet. The United States offers freedom from religious persecution (you can worship whomever or whatever you want or NOT), freedom to love whomever you want without persecution (ie; from whatever race, religion or gender), freedom from censorship (communication tools are not blocked by the government), freedom from LIMITATIONS! The opposite of FREEDOM is oppression. Oppression could be physical, psychological, emotional and even financial. If you are working your tail off and the government is taxing you up the wazoo, let's say 65% of your earnings that my friends is a form of SLAVERY! Because you are basically working to sustain government salaries and wonderful benefits and paying for government and non-government programs you know nothing about (EARMARKS), leaving you with enough net earnings to pay for a modest living that "THEY" deem acceptable. This administration is INTENT on taxing us any which way they can from every angle possible to be able to pay for the INTEREST ALONE on the debt they have incurred this year! You just wait and see.

These days, most commentary on the Declaration of Independence focuses on the implications of the passage that "all men are created equal [and] that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights." Dwelling on that passage might surprise Thomas Jefferson, who thought it was self-evident. The argument that flowed from his premises is more important, namely that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, and when the relationship shifts to the point where government becomes a threat to the lives, liberties and pursuit of happiness of the people, it is government - not the people - that must change.
A government becomes corrupt when it abuses the power derived from the people by doing things that harm the polity and when it acts primarily as a servant of its own interests. This definition of illegitimate government has a history going back at least to Aristotle, though the 17th-century philosopher John Locke, in his "Two Treatises of Government," gave it a form that would have been more familiar to American colonists. Beyond a certain point, when the actions of government become intolerable, the people have not only a right but a duty to reclaim their inalienable sovereignty and start over. This must be done, as Jefferson said, to "provide new Guards for their future security."
The list of grievances in the Declaration - the part people often skip over - is critical to the argument because those grievances serve as evidence to make the case that British government had by its actions sundered the fundamental relationship between Parliament and the American colonists. Such a catalog of "abuses and usurpations" today might include: imposing confiscatory levels of overall taxation; using budget authority to transfer billions of taxpayer dollars to government insiders and pet causes; running up the national debt to a point where it is nearly equal to the nation's total productive output; saddling current and future generations with ruinous debt to pay for pet programs that benefit the few at the expense of the many; failing to secure the nation's borders from a flood of illegal immigrants and standing in the way of states and localities seeking to take up this fundamental duty, which the national government has chosen to ignore; and a variety of other issues ranging from a sketchy national census to crumbling national security.
The prime difference between the situation in 2010 and that of 1776 is that the people now can provide oversight through the election process. The ballot is the corrective mechanism that was unavailable to the Founders. Today's dire situation in Washington has approached the intolerable because too few have gone to the polls to defend their rights against the predatory, permanent governing class in Congress. An electorate that fails to defend its rights deserves what it gets. Rights guarantee nothing unless they are used, and if they are not exercised, they tend to be exorcised.
After independence, Jefferson explained that the Declaration was "an expression of the American mind" intended to "give to that expression the proper tone and spirit called for by the occasion." The result is a timeless document the spirit of which is as applicable today as it was then. The people have the means at their disposal to take back our country and the government from the disconnected oligarchy in Washington. However, this only works if Americans actually step up. To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin, the country will only be a republic if the people are strong enough to keep it.

U.S. Rice farmers May Keep Fields Flooded For Waterfowl...
Wait a minute... I had it all wrong! When I caught hold of the headline, I got excited. But after I read the entire article, I discovered that the farmers aren't doing this out of the kindness of their heart.
So this is our federal government's ANSWER to the ecological catastrophe they're ENABLING along the Gulf coast?!?! If they can go through ALL OF THIS TROUBLE in getting these farmers to cooperate with this request... WHY THE HECK can't they move their ARSES to prevent the oil from entering the marshes?!?! NOW I want you to think about this for a moment... their land is going to be flooded for the waterfowl, great BUT the price of RICE is going to SKYROCKET because these farmers are NOT GOING TO BE PRODUCING RICE!!! This world will also be SUPPLIED with less rice output/production. UGH!

Northeastern Louisiana rice farmers may keep their fields flooded throughout the winter to entice migrating waterfowl to stop short of the coastal marshland threatened by oil from the BP spill.
A new U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service program would pay producers in eight states to begin flooding as many as 150,000 acres of fallow fields this summer and harvested fields this fall.
"I think it's a wonderful program with tremendous potential benefits for both wildlife and farmers," said John Owen of Richland Parish, a members of the Louisiana Rice Growers Association board and president of the Northeast Louisiana Rice Growers Association.
Natural Resources Conservation Service state conservationist Kevin Norton said he expects not all of the details of the program, including the price per acre the government would pay farmers, has been complete.
"We will be evaluating applications and funding before Aug. 1," Norton said.
The program includes northeastern and southwestern Louisiana.
Owen estimated that it would take at least $50 to $75 per acre to attract the acreage the government hopes for in the program, and the Louisiana Rice Growers Association has agreed to form a committee to propose the amount of compensation that would be adequate.
He said the cost for farmers to maintain such habitat would vary depending on whether producers had to irrigate and land preparation.
The program wants both flooded fields with 10 to 12 inches of water for ducks and geese and mud flats with an inch or less of water than shore birds prefer.
"There would be some fairly intensive management practices on some fields, especially the fallow fields that have to be disked and irrigated this summer," Owen said.
The migration season will begin in a few weeks with shorebirds followed by teal in September and ducks and geese later in the fall.
Richland Parish rice farmer Fred Franklin said he believes farmers will be willing to participate.
"Most farmers are dedicated conservationists," Franklin said.
Johnny Saichuk, the LSU AgCenter's rice specialist, agreed.
"They are concerned about the environment, and they are willing to help," he said.
Saichuk studied the costs of pumping water, and it averaged $25 an acre when diesel was much cheaper.
"It's pretty expensive and these guys couldn't afford to flood up without compensation," he said.
The other states in the program are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri and Texas.
Norton recently told the Louisiana Rice Growers Association board that multiple wildlife organizations have been interested in persuading farmers to flood their fields in anticipation of the oil spill disrupting waterfowl overwintering this year along the coast.
He said he has received calls from across the nation.
"People want to do something to offset the impacts (of the spill)," he said.

Illinois-based Nalco Corporation is responsible for the Corexit 9500 chemical dispersant highlighted by experts as being 4 times more toxic than the oil that is flowing into the Gulf. Scientists in congressional hearings added that the dispersant is more toxic than other similar dispersant on the market. Naturally, whenever a major disaster takes place — especially when major, society-altering solutions are being offered — one needs to follow the trail of money and power to see who benefits. Sure enough, a casual search of Nalco’s Web site reveals their company history; it leads right to the doorstep of Goldman Sachs.
Nalco seems to have started in 1928 Chicago and became immediately involved in both the oil industry and water treatment facilities. 1982 seems to have been a massive turning point for the company as their Web site states, “ORS-419 is used in the tires of the Space Shuttle Columbia. The Nalco product is the only non-silicone product of its type on the market approved by the space shuttle tire’s manufacturer.” Thereafter, things really seem to have taken off as shown here:

Global sales now exceed $4 billion and the Gulf cleanup is in the hands of a group of corporate pals who have brought us such fine moments of humanity such as Blackstone’s “locust capitalism” hostile takeover binge which triggered a major political backlash in Germany and elsewhere, and the newly proposed austerity measures coming to America. Apollo Management is in the Wall Street Journal’s Who’s Who in Private Equity with the very human investment strategies of leveraged and distressed buyouts and debt investments — investments now top $37 billion. And, by now, Goldman Sachs’s reputation precedes itself as having engineered the housing crash and exacerbating a financial meltdown in Greece and across Europe.
Yet, Goldman Sachs is far too gluttonous a creature to be happy with administering the profits from the physical fallout of the Gulf disaster. The kings of the carbon market — yes, that market that trades nothing but air — have not been having an easy time of it pushing man-made global warming. In the Gulf, however, they have their cohort, Barack Obama, well positioned to steer the pirate ship back on course. It was Obama who helped fund the carbon program from its inception after all. Right on cue, Obama’s e-mail campaign is launched to exploit suffering at the behest of his corporate controllers.

This story is part of an ongoing collaboration between ProPublica and FRONTLINE (PBS).
A photographer taking pictures for these articles, was detained Friday while shooting pictures in Texas City, Texas.
The photographer, Lance Rosenfield, said that shortly after arriving in town, he was confronted by a BP security officer, local police and a man who identified himself as an agent of the Department of Homeland Security. He was released after the police reviewed the pictures he had taken on Friday and recorded his date of birth, Social Security number and other personal information.
The police officer then turned that information over to the BP security guard under what he said was standard procedure, according to Rosenfield.
No charges were filed.
Rosenfield, an experienced freelance photographer, said he was detained shortly after shooting a photograph of a Texas City sign on a public roadway. Rosenfield said he was followed by a BP employee in a truck after taking the picture and blocked by two police cars when he pulled into a gas station.
According to Rosenfield, the officers said they had a right to look at photos taken near secured areas of the refinery, even if they were shot from public property. Rosenfield said he was told he would be "taken in" if he declined to comply. Michael Marr, a BP spokesman, released a statement explaining the company's actions:
"BP Security followed the industry practice that is required by federal law. The photographer was released with his photographs after those photos were viewed by a representative of the Joint Terrorism Task Force who determined that the photographer's actions did not pose a threat to public safety."
Paul Steiger, editor-in-chief of ProPublica, said: "We certainly appreciate the need to secure the nation's refineries. But we're deeply troubled by BP's conduct here, especially when they knew we were working on deadline on critical stories about this very facility. And we see no reason why, if law enforcement needed to review the unpublished photographs, that should have included sharing them with a representative of a private company."

(CNSNews.com) – Billy Nungesser, president of New Orleans’ Plaquemines Parish, sensed that a chart showing 140 oil skimmers at work -- a chart given to him by BP and the Coast Guard -- was “somewhat inaccurate.” So, Nungesser asked to fly over the spill to verify the number.
The flyover was cancelled three times before those officials admitted that just 31 of the 140 skimmers were actually deployed.
The incident is detailed in a report released Thursday by Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Republicans say the report provides evidence that the Obama administration misrepresented the assets devoted to the cleanup, misrepresented the timing of when government officials knew there was an oil spill and misrepresented the level of control the government had over the matter. It also claims the Obama administration seemed more interested in public relations than cleaning the mess and plugging the hole.
The report, which relies on interviews with several local officials in Louisiana, goes on to quote Nungesser, who had been on local and national television enough so that the White House became concerned. Two White House officials visited him on Father’s Day and said, “What do we have to do to keep you off TV?” His answer was, “Give me what I need.”
Other Parish officials said the administration did not provide as many assets as it claimed. One Parish official called these “phantom assets.”
The report also states that the people in the Gulf do not support President Obama’s six-month moratorium on offshore drilling, and also criticized Obama’s delay in allowing international assistance until 70 days into the spill.
“This report reveals a stark contrast between the narrative being told by the administration in Washington and the sobering realities and challenges that the people closest to this catastrophe are struggling to overcome,” said Rep. Darrell Issa, ranking Republican on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
“These testimonials from the people who are on the frontlines of this crisis have brought to light a bureaucratic quagmire that is exacerbating the response and clean-up effort - in a post-Katrina world, this is unimaginable and unacceptable,” Issa said.
“The evidence on the ground suggests that the White House has been more focused on the public relations of this crisis than with providing local officials the resources they need to deal with it,” he added.
On April 20, an explosion rocked Deepwater Horizon, which was under contract with BP to build an exploratory well off the Gulf of Mexico. This explosion has prompted some to call it the worst oil spill in history. As of June 30, the federal government estimates that between 40.7 million gallon and 117.6 millions of oil was released into the gulf.
Though Obama administration officials have said they were not fully aware that the Deepwater Horizon explosion had caused a major oil spill, the report cast doubt on that assertion.

WTF? Obama just nominated Ramona Emilia Romero as General Counsel of the USDA. Who's she? Well, she's spent the last 12 years working as a lawyer for DuPont. You know, the pesticide company. Among her areas of specialty was antitrust litigation. I am pretty confident that means that she was helping DuPont weasel its way through U.S. antitrust and competition law to keep it from having its mergers denied or getting accused of anti-competitive behavior. This is a strange pick, considering that right now the Dept of Justice is doing a series of antitrust workshops focused on agriculture.

Since 2008, Ms. Romero has also served as General Counsel of Sentinel Transportation LLC, a DuPont joint venture. She has held other key positions at DuPont, including Senior Counsel and then Corporate Counsel for complex commercial and antitrust litigation (1998-2005), and Corporate Counsel and Manager of Operations and Partnering (2005-2007). I can't believe the FDA is even giving this thought the TIME OF DAY!!! It should be immediately rejected. UGH! Our federal government agencies are really pissing me off. The Food and Drug Administration is seriously considering whether to approve the first genetically engineered animal that people would eat — salmon that can grow at twice the normal rate.
The developer of the salmon has been trying to get approval for a decade. But the company now seems to have submitted most or all of the data the F.D.A. needs to analyze whether the salmon are safe to eat, nutritionally equivalent to other salmon and safe for the environment, according to government and biotechnology industry officials. A public meeting to discuss the salmon may be held as early as this fall.
Some consumer and environmental groups are likely to raise objections to approval. Even within the F.D.A., there has been a debate about whether the salmon should be labeled as genetically engineered (genetically engineered crops are not labeled).
The salmon’s approval would help open a path for companies and academic scientists developing other genetically engineered animals, like cattle resistant to mad cow disease or pigs that could supply healthier bacon. Next in line behind the salmon for possible approval would probably be the “enviropig,” developed at a Canadian university, which has less phosphorus pollution in its manure.
The salmon was developed by a company called AquaBounty Technologies and would be raised in fish farms. It is an Atlantic salmon that contains a growth hormone gene from a Chinook salmon as well as a genetic on-switch from the ocean pout, a distant relative of the salmon.
Normally, salmon do not make growth hormone in cold weather. But the pout’s on-switch keeps production of the hormone going year round. The result is salmon that can grow to market size in 16 to 18 months instead of three years, though the company says the modified salmon will not end up any bigger than a conventional fish.
“You don’t get salmon the size of the Hindenburg,” said Ronald L. Stotish, the chief executive of AquaBounty. “You can get to those target weights in a shorter time.”
AquaBounty, which is based in Waltham, Mass., and publicly traded in London, said last week that the F.D.A. had signed off on five of the seven sets of data required to demonstrate that the fish was safe for consumption and for the environment. It said it demonstrated, for instance, that the inserted gene did not change through multiple generations and that the genetic engineering did not harm the animals.
“Perhaps in the next few months, we expect to see a final approval,” Mr. Stotish said.
But the company has been overly optimistic before.
He said it would take two or three years after approval for the salmon to reach supermarkets.
The F.D.A. confirmed it was reviewing the salmon but, because of confidentiality rules, would not comment further.
Under a policy announced in 2008, the F.D.A. is regulating genetically engineered animals as if they were veterinary drugs and using the rules for those drugs. And applications for approval of new drugs must be kept confidential by the agency.
Critics say the drug evaluation process does not allow full assessment of the possible environmental impacts of genetically altered animals and also blocks public input.
“There is no opportunity for anyone from the outside to see the data or criticize it,” said Margaret Mellon, director of the food and environment program at the Union of Concerned Scientists. When consumer groups were invited to discuss biotechnology policy with top F.D.A. officials last month, Ms. Mellon said she warned the officials that approval of the salmon would generate “a firestorm of negative response.”
How consumers will react is not entirely clear. Some public opinion surveys have shown that Americans are more wary about genetically engineered animals than about the genetically engineered crops now used in a huge number of foods. But other polls suggest that many Americans would accept the animals if they offered environmental or nutritional benefits.
Mr. Stotish said the benefit of the fast-growing salmon would be to help supply the world’s food needs using fewer resources.
Government officials and industry executives say the F.D.A. is moving cautiously on the salmon. “It’s going to be a P. R. issue,” said one government official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the issue.
Some of these government officials and executives said that F.D.A. officials had discussed internally whether the salmon could be labeled to give consumers the choice of avoiding them.

Today I was really bummed out to discover that a lot of great songs that I selected for my virtual jukebox at Playlist.com were removed. But on the flip side, it caused me to go through my cd's again and remembered how good this song made me feel. So I added this song and another of her's "Walking On Sunshine".
