Jack O'Lanterns and The Tale Of Stingy Jack. A Person Asked Me Today If I Knew How The Tradition Began. I Had No Idea. So I Looked It Up And Now I Am Sharing Info With You. :)
[source: Pumpkin Nook]
The Irish brought the tradition of carving pumpkins into Jack O'Lantern to America. But, the original Jack O'Lantern was not a pumpkin. Pumpkins did not exist in Ireland. Ancient Celtic cultures in Ireland carved turnips on All Hallow's Eve, and placed an ember in them, to ward off evil spirits.
The Tale of Stingy Jack and the Jack O' Lantern
Jack O'Lantern legend goes back hundreds of years in Irish History. Many of the stories, center round Stingy Jack. Here's the most popular story:
Stingy Jack was a miserable, old drunk who took pleasure in playing tricks on just about everyone: family, friends, his mother and even the Devil himself. One day, he tricked the Devil into climbing up an apple tree. After the Devil climbed up the tree, Stingy Jack hurriedly placed crosses around the trunk of the tree. Unable to touch a cross, the Devil was stuck in the tree. Stingy Jack made the Devil promise him not to take his soul when he died. Once the devil promised not to take his soul, Stingy Jack removed the crosses, and the Devil climbed down out of the apple tree.
Many years later, Jack died, he went to the pearly gates of Heaven and was told by Saint Peter that he was mean and cruel, and had led a miserable, worthless life on earth. Stingy Jack was not allowed to enter heaven. He then went down to Hell and the Devil. The Devil kept his promise and would not allow him to enter Hell. Now Jack was scared . He had nowhere to go, but to wander about forever in the dark Netherworld between heaven and hell. He asked the Devil how he could leave, as there was no light. The Devil tossed him an ember from the flames of Hell, to help Stingy Jack light his way. Jack had a Turnip with him. It was one of his favorite foods, and he always carried one with him. Jack hollowed out the Turnip, and placed the ember the Devil had given him, inside the turnip. From that day onward, Stingy Jack roamed the earth without a resting place, lighting his way as he went with his "Jack O'Lantern".
On all Hallow's eve, the Irish hollowed out Turnips, rutabagas, gourds, potatoes and beets. They placed a light in them to ward off evil spirits and keep Stingy Jack away. These were the original Jack O'Lanterns. In the 1800's a couple of waves of Irish immigrants came to America. The Irish immigrants quickly discovered that Pumpkins were bigger and easier to carve out. So they used pumpkins for Jack O'Lanterns.
A Little Halloween History
[source: wikipedia]
Halloween or Hallowe’en (a contraction of All Hallows’ Evening) is an annual holiday observed around the world on October 31, the night preceding All Hallows Day. Much like Day of the Dead celebrations, the holiday has ancient origins tied to seasonal change, harvest time, and festivals honoring the dead. Typical Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (also known as "guising"), attending costume parties, carving jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.
Pre-Christian influences
Historian Nicholas Rogers, exploring the origins of Halloween, notes that while "some folklorists have detected its origins in the Roman feast of Pomona, the goddess of fruits and seeds, or in the festival of the dead called Parentalia, it is more typically linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-an or sow-in)", derived from the Old Irish Samuin meaning "summer's end". Samhain was the first and by far the most important of the four quarter days in the medieval Irish and Scottish calendar and, falling on the last day of Autumn, it was a time for stock-taking and preparation for the cold winter months ahead. There was also a sense that this was the time of year when the physical and supernatural worlds were closest and magical things could happen. To ward off these spirits, the Gaels built huge, symbolically regenerative bonfires and invoked the help of the gods through animal and perhaps even human sacrifice.
Christian influences
Halloween is also thought to have been heavily influenced by the Christian holy days of All Saints' Day (also known as Hallowmas, All Hallows, and Hallowtide) and All Souls' Day. Falling on November 1st and 2nd respectively, collectively they were a time for honoring the Saints and praying for the recently departed who had yet to reach heaven. By the end of the 12th century they had become days of holy obligation across Europe and involved such traditions as ringing bells for the souls in purgatory and "souling", the custom of baking bread or soul cakes for "all crysten [christened] souls". It was traditionally believed that the souls of the departed wandered the earth until All Saints Day, and All Hallow's Eve provided one last chance for the dead to gain vengeance on their enemies before moving onto the next world. To avoid being recognised by a soul, Christians would wear masques and costumes to disguise themselves, following the lighted candles set by others to guide their travel for worship the next day. Today, this practice has been perpetuated through trick-or-treating.
In Britain the rituals of Hallowtide and Halloween came under attack during the Reformation as Protestants denounced purgatory as a "popish" doctrine incompatible with the notion of predestination. In addition the increasing popularity of Guy Fawkes Night from 1605 on saw Halloween become eclipsed in Britain with the notable exception of Scotland. There and in Ireland, they had been celebrating Samhain and Halloween since the early Middle Ages, and it is believed the Kirk took a more pragmatic approach towards Halloween, viewing it as important to the life cycle and rites of passage of local communities and thus ensuring its survival in the country.
North American almanacs of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century give no indication that Halloween was recognized as a holiday. The Puritans of New England, for example, maintained strong opposition to the holiday and it was not until the mass Irish and Scottish immigration during the 19th century that the holiday was introduced to the continent in earnest. Initially confined to the immigrant communities during the mid-nineteenth century, it was gradually assimilated into mainstream society and by the first decade of the twentieth century it was being celebrated coast to coast by people of all social, racial and religious backgrounds.
Etymology
The word Halloween is first attested in the 16th century and represents a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows-Even ("evening"), that is, the night before All Hallows Day. Although the phrase All Hallows is found in Old English (ealra hฤlgena mรฆssedรฆg, mass-day of all saints), All-Hallows-Even is itself not attested until 1556.

The Hellbound Train
The Hellbound Train
poem written by Anonymous
A Texas cowboy lay down on a barroom floor,
Having drunk so much he could drink no more;
So he fell asleep with a troubled brain
To dream that he rode on a hell-bound train.
The engine with murderous blood was damp
And was brilliantly lit with a brimstone lamp;
An imp, for fuel, was shoveling bones,
While the furnace rang with a thousand groans.
The boiler was filled with lager beer
And the devil himself was the engineer;
The passengers were a most motley crew-
Church member, atheist, Gentile, and Jew,
Rich men in broad cloth, beggars in rags,
Handsome young ladies, and withered old hags,
Yellow and black men, red, brown, and white,
All chained together-O God, what a sight!
While the train rushed on at an awful pace-
The sulphurous fumes scorched their hands and face;
Wider and wider the country grew,
As faster and faster the engine flew.
Louder and louder the thunder crashed
And brighter and brighter the lightning flashed;
Hotter and hotter the air became
Till the clothes were burned from each quivering frame.
And out of the distance there arose a yell,
"Ha, ha," said the devil, "we're nearing hell"
Then oh, how the passengers all shrieked with pain
And begged the devil to stop the train.
But he capered about and danced for glee,
And laughed and joked at their misery.
"My faithful friends, you have done the work
And the devil never can a payday shirk.
"You've bullied the weak, you've robbed the poor,
The starving brother you've turned from the door;
You've laid up gold where the canker rust,
And have given free vent to your beastly lust.
"You've justice scorned, and corruption sown,
And trampled the laws of nature down.
You have drunk, rioted, cheated, plundered, and lied,
And mocked at God in your hell-born pride.
"You have paid full fare, so I'll carry you through,
For it's only right you should have your due.
Why, the laborer always expects his hire,
So I'll land you safe in the lake of fire,
"Where your flesh will waste in the flames that roar,
And my imps torment you forevermore."
Then the cowboy awoke with an anguished cry,
His clothes wet with sweat and his hair standing high.
Then he prayed as he never had prayed till that hour
To be saved from his sin and the demon's power;
And his prayers and his vows were not in vain,
For he never rode the hell-bound train.
Do Not Whisper To The Wind ~ by Rayne Avalotus
A poem/song often told to small children by the superstitous. Though this piece is often heard most often in human Santharian villages, it is believed to have originated from stories of the Forbidden Zone in Northern Sarvonia and dark places like the Water Marshes.
Do Not Whisper To The Wind
by Rayne Avalotus
by Rayne Avalotus
Do not whisper to the wind,
For wind winds far and deep,
Deep down into the shadow land
Where evil creatures sleep.
The echo of thy uttered word
Can wake them, make them creep!
Do not whisper to the wind,
For seething monsters hear;
The winds will carry monologues
To meet their careful ears,
And they will rise up from their tombs
To plague the world with fear.
Do not whisper to the wind
For demons know, they say,
Where rests thy sleepy, pretty head
When darkness swallows day,
And in the night they’ll come on thee
And steal thy soul away!
Do not whisper to the wind,
For evil’s waiting there
With anxious claws and open ears
Just listening to the air.
And waiting for a foolish child
To whisper unaware.
Do not whisper to the wind,
For beasts come leather skinned
With eyes aglow in sickly hue
And figures tall and thinned.
Thou may not, shall not, cannot
Ever whisper to the wind!

CLEARWATER, Fla. - A Clearwater police officer was arrested after officials said he stopped a pedestrian and told her he wouldn't cite her for jaywalking or charge her for sexual misconduct in exchange for sexual acts with him.
Nicolas Paloma, 29, an officer with the Clearwater Police Department since 2018, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with sexual battery and false imprisonment, according to Police Chief Eric Gandy.
"I had to check myself before coming in here, because I'm exceptionally upset at the betrayal of trust in the level of confidence that people have in our officers," Chief Gandy said at a press conference Tuesday. "It's exceptionally damaging to our reputation and the reputation of everyone in law enforcement."
Chief Gandy said early Sunday morning, Paloma conducted a pedestrian stop on a 32-year-old woman near the Clearwater Beach roundabout. Investigators said she was visiting Clearwater Beach and is not from the area.
Paloma then told her to get in his car and said he could take her to her hotel, and she could take care of the charges by "doing things for him," according to Chief Gandy.
Paloma then took the victim around various locations on Clearwater Beach for about 30 minutes and engaged in sexual acts with her before dropping her off near her hotel.
Chief Gandy added that Paloma made efforts to hide his location from police. Authorities were made aware of the incident after they responded to a dispute between the victim and a friend, and she divulged shortly thereafter the incident involving Paloma.
"It's intolerable in this profession and certainly in the Clearwater Police Department," Chief Gandy said.
He added that Clearwater police are actively investigating and asking anyone with information on this case or other cases to contact them at 727-562-4385. CPD has also reached out to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) in the event that any other cases involving Officer Paloma come to light.
"We have to proceed in the abundance of caution," Chief Gandy said. "This is a guy who under the cover of law took this action, and we have to be very careful to ensure that we don't have somebody else out there. We just don't know at this juncture."
Paloma has been placed on administrative leave. He has no previous disciplinary history, according to police.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy arrested on charges that he allegedly tried to solicit sex from a teenage girl bonded out of jail on Wednesday.
Jemiah Thomas, 35, has been suspended without pay while the investigation continues. On Wednesday, he appeared in court.
Judge Chris Brown told Thomas that based on the lack of his criminal history, he would set a total bond of $40,000 — $10,000 each for the four felony counts Thomas is facing, which include using a computer to seduce/solicit a child, transmitting information harmful to minors, traveling to meet a child after luring them on a computer and attempted lewd and lascivious/written solicitation of a minor 16-17.
Thomas paid $4,000 in bond to get released from jail on Wednesday. The judge also ordered that he wear an ankle GPS monitoring device.
On Tuesday, Sheriff Gregory Tony spoke about the allegations, saying that Thomas met the 17-year-old victim while he was on duty and responding to a domestic violence call in Pompano Beach.
“In this particular case you have a deputy out here who did nothing more than take advantage,” said Tony.
According to the investigation, Thomas provided his personal cellphone number to the girl and began communicating with her, at one point, telling her that he could be her “personal sheriff that handcuffs you from time to time,” authorities said.
In mid-October, a complaint was made to BSO from the girl’s father regarding Thomas, and detectives began an investigation with the assistance of BSO’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.
Over the course of nine days, Thomas would engage in text conversations with an undercover detective who Thomas thought was the girl, BSO said.
In those conversations, Thomas indicated his desire to meet with her privately and perform sex acts on her. Thomas is also accused of sending the child a photo of his private parts, according to investigators.
On Sunday, authorities said Thomas engaged the girl in conversation about renting a hotel room to engage in sexual activity.
On Monday, Thomas arrived at a Broward County hotel and advised the girl that he was present and awaiting her arrival, deputies said.
The child, who was an undercover detective, canceled the meeting with Thomas which led to his arrest, according to BSO.
“The arrest of Deputy Jemiah Thomas on these charges is deeply disturbing. One of the most important obligations that law enforcement officers have is to protect our greatest resource, our kids. If these allegations are true, Deputy Thomas broke that trust,” Tony said at a press conference on Tuesday. “As soon as BSO learned of these allegations, we immediately began an investigation which resulted in Deputy Thomas’s arrest just days later. I have made a commitment to transparency and accountability in this organization, and this case shows, once again, that we will hold our employees accountable.”
Thomas was hired by BSO on May 15, 2017.
Attorney Sidney Fleischman, who is representing Thomas, told the judge on Wednesday that his client is a father of four, that he and his wife own a home in Palm Beach County, and that the deputy is looking forward to defending himself.
“He’s a good person, he had a great reputation as a police officer. He’s doing well under the circumstances, he’s looking forward to getting out of jail so we can start working on the case and the family is very supportive of him,” said Fleischman.
The judge ordered that conditions of his bond release would be no contact with any minors except for his own children and family members, he is not allowed to use devices with internet access, and he would have to wear a GPS ankle monitor.
Fleischman said he has four minor children, and he’s been married for seven years.
Fleischman said that since he is not earning an income, he’ll need to find employment.
“He does need to find employment and at least level 2 will allow him to look for work, to get permission from pretrial to be able to work . . .the household when he was working was dependent on two incomes.”

DENVER — Police have arrested a girl wanted in a September shooting that wounded five people outside a Denver bar in Lower Downtown.
Keanna Rosenburgh was arrested Thursday morning in Barstow, California, according to the Denver Police Department. The city is in the Mojave Desert of southern California, nearly halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
“Through extensive investigative efforts, Denver Police Fugitive Unit investigators determined the suspect was in Barstow, California, and further investigation and surveillance led to the arrest this morning,” the department said in a release.
Police said Rosenburgh is a juvenile but did not say her exact age. Her booking photo will not be released.
Rosenburgh is being held on eight counts of first-degree attempted homicide in the Sept. 16 shooting outside a bar at 19th and Market streets. The Denver District Attorney’s Office will make the final decision on charges.
Police previously said Rosenburgh tried to get into a LoDo bar on a Saturday night but was denied by the club’s security, who believed she was not using her own ID. She allegedly got out of line, went back to speak with security then shot toward the club as she left.
Police have said the suspect may have been shooting toward security and the victims were not the intended targets. The five victims are expected to survive.
The incident was captured on surveillance video, with the shooter’s image circulated widely afterward. Police said tips helped them identify Rosenburgh as the person in the video.
Denver Police said the arrest was made with assistance from the FBI Los Angeles SWAT team, FBI Los Angeles Desert Cities Safe Streets Task Force and the Barstow Police Department.

The shooting injured officers Ashely Boleyjack and Gregory Kern. Both were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and have since been released.
John C. Drake Jr. fled the scene of the shooting, sparking a shelter-in-place order in La Vergne and a TBI Blue Alert issued statewide as law enforcement officers continued their search.

First responders were notified immediately and arrived at the scene of the accident within minutes. The tragedy was witnessed by some of Ms. Sanchez’s family and co-workers, and we empathize with their trauma and grief. Ms. Sanchez was not a Grimmway Farms employee, but she and her co-workers are part of our extended Grimmway family. We are heartbroken by Ms. Sanchez’s death and for all those impacted by this accident. It’s important to note that accidents like these are investigated by state and regulatory authorities, including Cal-OSHA. Grimmway Farms is fully cooperating with these investigations, and we have launched our own internal investigations into this terrible occurrence. Additionally, her employer and the trucking company are conducting their own investigations. As we fully understand what happened, Grimmway will take appropriate corrective actions and will work with the relevant contractors, requiring they do as well.It has been suggested that employees or contractors were required to continue to work in the same field immediately after this tragic accident occurred. Based on early findings from our ongoing internal investigations, we do not believe a directive was made by Grimmway to continue work on the day of the accident. However, it is evident work should have ceased immediately. We continue to meet with employees and contractors who were present to understand what happened, so that appropriate training is undertaken to make certain this does not happen again. While we await the final analysis and further information, we again extend our deepest sympathies to Ms. Sanchez’s family and her co-workers.
The driver was employed by the contractor Garcia Trucking, Grimmway said in its statement.
A witness previously told 17 News some of the workers left their jobs over fear for their safety.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A 58-year-old mother is now gone after she was fatally struck by a vehicle while working in the fields.
Witnesses say her daughter was holding her in her last moments.
“It was… heartbreaking, watching her. Because she basically passed in her arms,” said Ernesto Perez Jr.
Farm workers were picking carrots just before noon on Sept. 20 when a truck backed into Rosa Miriam Sanchez at the Grimmway Farm in New Cuyama, which is about 66 miles southwest of downtown Bakersfield.
“He [the driver] was just going fast, and he hits her, I see the truck jump. And at first, I thought it was a water jug, so when he went back forward that’s when I realized there was a person, and when we ran up, it was my… it was Miss Rosa,” said Perez Jr., a coworker of Rosa.
But things kept moving along as usual.
“We ended up calling 9-1-1, and what I felt wrong was that they continued working throughout the whole thing instead of them moving out, they still stayed working there,” said Perez Jr.
Nayeli Flores, who supervised Rosa Sanchez’s group, asked if they should move away from her body.
“I did ask, ‘Hey, should we leave this part?’, because it was right next to [Rosa] Miriam Sanchez, and they just told me ‘We just have to finish this part, even though if we need help, we’re going to have to finish,'” said Flores. “So they brought another crew next to her and they finished that part.”
This is a tragedy Miriam Ramirez, Rosa’s daughter, says could’ve been avoided.
“Even the truck that hit her didn’t even have, like, it’s supposed to make this beeping noise when it reverses, it didn’t have that. The driver was going really fast,” said Miriam Ramirez.
Perez Jr. says the driver would usually go too fast and close to workers, which other drivers didn’t do at their farm.
“It could’ve been avoided because he had hit a truck on Monday that same week,” said Perez Jr.
“This accident shouldn’t have happened because we did let our supervisors know about this truck driver, I don’t know why they never did anything,” Flores said.
The driver is allegedly employed by Garcia Trucking.
Flores and her group of workers are employed by the contractor Esparza Enterprises, both contractors declined to comment on this.
Grimmway Farms, which owns the field, told 17 News they are saddened by this loss, and value each employee and contract labor employee like family.
But Miriam Ramirez is demanding justice for her mother.
“At least I want that person to go to jail, because nothing happened to him either,” said Miriam Ramirez.
Miriam Ramirez says the orders to finish picking up the carrots showed how much they were valued as people.
“It wasn’t even something important, they didn’t have to finish. They really didn’t have to do any of that, they just… It’s like apathy I guess, they didn’t really care,” said Miriam Ramirez.
Nayeli Flores says she had 24 workers in her group, but since the incident she lost eight who feared for their safety.
Flores said Rosa was always a role model and respectful worker.
CalOSHA is investigating this incident. The Santa Barbara Coroner’s Office said they are investigating the death.

Acapulco – Three separate armed attacks in Mexico on Monday left at least 24 people dead, including a dozen police officers, authorities said about the latest violence to hit regions plagued by drug trafficking.
In the deadliest incident, unidentified attackers targeted a security patrol in Guerrero state's municipality of Coyuca de Benitez, prosecutor Alejandro Hernandez said.
At least 13 people were killed and two others wounded in that attack, the state prosecutor's office said in a statement, with Hernandez earlier having confirmed that at least 11 of those killed were members of the municipal police force.
A senior state security official was traveling in the convoy when it was attacked, authorities said, without confirming media reports that he was murdered along with police bodyguards.
Security forces were later seen patrolling the area -- where several lifeless bodies lay on the ground -- as a police helicopter flew overhead.
Another attack, in the neighboring state of Michoacan, left four civilians and a policeman dead, and two others wounded, authorities said.
A group of gunmen had attacked the brother of the mayor of the town of Tacambaro, according to the state prosecutor's office.
A restaurant worker and a member of the police force were among those killed, while the mayor's brother was wounded, it said.
In a video posted on social media, gunmen were seen opening fire before fleeing in several vehicles.
A third attack on Monday, a gunfight between alleged drug dealers in the central Mexican state of Puebla, left at least six dead and two wounded, the regional government reported.
The incident took place in the rural community of San Miguel Canoa, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from Mexico City.
Mexico is plagued by cartel-related bloodshed that has seen more than 420,000 people murdered since the government deployed the military in its war on drugs in 2006.
Since then, the country's murder rate has tripled to 25 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Mexico has also registered more than 110,000 disappearances since 1962, most attributed to criminal organizations.
Guerrero and Michoacan are among the country's most violent areas, due to confrontations between rival drug traffickers and security forces.
Although it is home to the famed coastal resort of Acapulco, Guerrero is one of Mexico's poorest states.
Violence -- particularly targeting low-level officials -- often escalates across the country in the run-up to elections. Presidential and parliamentary polls are set to be held next year.
Even so, experts said the latest wave of violence was particularly shocking.
"Guerrero has long seen one of Mexico's most complicated armed conflicts, but the current, pre-electoral levels of violence are extraordinary," Falko Ernst, an analyst at International Crisis Group, wrote on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
Since taking office in 2018, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has championed a "hugs not bullets" strategy to tackle violent crime at its roots by fighting poverty and inequality with social programs, rather than with the army.
ARB24 English published October 24, 2023: 19 killed in day of bloodshed in southwest Mexico, including police and officials. A local security secretary and 12 police officers were shot dead in Guerrero state Monday, authorities said, the worst episode in a day of violence across southwestern Mexico that killed at least 19 people.
Sky News published August 1, 2018: On the frontline of Mexico's drug war.
Mexico's official murder rate last year was nearly 30,000 people. The worst year since the government started counting bodies 20 years ago.
It is widely assumed that this is almost entirely caused by the drug wars raging between the country's Narco Cartels and the government.
Murdering business or political opponents is taking over from legal action and the ballot box.
We travelled to one of the worst hit areas in Mexico, the formerly glamorous playground of the wealthy, Acapulco, to see what is happening to society and why it has become so violent.

MEXICO CITY – A local security secretary and 12 police officers were shot dead in Guerrero state Monday, authorities said, the worst episode in a day of violence across southwestern Mexico that killed at least 19 people.
Another person was slain in the Guerrero state capital and five people, including a police officer, were killed in the neighboring state of Michoacan, officials said.
Eleven people were initially reported killed in the attack in El Papayo, which is in the Guerrero township of Coyuca de Benรญtez on the Pacific Coast. Hours later, the state prosecutor’s office said two more police officers had died.
The secretary for security of Coyuca de Benรญtez was among those slain, said Gabriel Hernรกndez Mendoza, state deputy prosecutor for investigations. He gave no further details.
Rigoberto Acosta Gonzรกlez, an academic and community leader, was reported shot to death in Chilpancingo, the Guerrero state capital 60 miles (95 kilometers) northeast of Coyuca de Benitez.
In Michoacan, north of Guerrero, at least five people, including a police officer, were fatally shot and two others were injured, the office of the state’s attorney general said on X, formerly Twitter.
Officials are finding themselves increasingly endangered in the region, where several powerful drug cartels continue to fight for control. According to figures from Common Cause, 341 police officers have been killed in Mexico so far this year. In 2022, at least 403 were slain.
In the Michoacan incident, the bodies of the five slain people were found on a highway in the township of Tacambaro after an attack targeted the mayor’s brother. The state prosecutor’s office did not say if the mayor’s brother was among the wounded.
A video of the attack circulating on social media appeared to show heavy gunfire, followed by at least five armed men running to board a pickup truck.
Despite the government sending more than 2,000 National Guard troops and military personnel last month, Michoacan remains one of the deadliest states in Mexico, according to the national security department.
Several criminal groups are known to operate in the region, including the powerful Jalisco New Generation cartel, the Familia Michoacana, the Viagras and the Knights Templar.
Gun violence has also spilled over into neighboring areas. On Sunday, a shootout at an illegal horse race killed five people and wounded five others in Queretaro, a central state on the northeastern border of Michoacan.

Tens of thousands of families sought refuge in shelters, parts of the city of Acapulco are in ruin and at least 27 people are dead as the total scope of damage from Hurricane Otis in Mexico still remains unclear.
Otis roared ashore early Wednesday morning as a deadly and destructive Category 5 storm. It left Acapulco, a popular resort town, cut off from the rest of the country. Landslides and downed trees blocked roads and phone service and other utilities were knocked out.
On Thursday, a portion of the main highway was reopened and some utilities were being restored. But much of the city of 1 million people remained without power.
In addition to the dead, four people remained missing, government officials said during a Thursday morning news briefing.
Hundreds of military personnel, medical teams and rescue crews were sent to the affected areas. There were some reports that they lacked the proper equipment to clear roads of mud and debris.
“It took us a while to get there because of the rain and the remnants of the hurricane,” Mexico President Andrรฉs Manuel Lรณpez Obrador said, according to The Wall Street Journal. “The highway was blocked by collapses and landslides. But we arrived with equipment and machinery.”
It wasn't immediately clear where the deaths occurred. Lรณpez Obrador said one of the victims was a soldier killed when a wall of his home collapsed. Three of the missing were Navy personnel.
The limited information, photos and video coming from the city show severe damage to structures, including many of the hotels and high-rises in tourist areas, and flooding that inundated city streets. Windows were blown out, roofs ripped off and vehicles crushed.
Auto parts worker Pablo Navarro rode out the storm in a 13th-story hotel room on Acapulco's beachfront.
“I took shelter in the bathroom, and thankfully the door held,” Navarro told The Associated Press. “But there were some rooms where the wind blew out the windows and the doors.”
There were also reports of chaos and looting in the city, and residents desperate for basic supplies.
In more rural areas, mud and debris washed across roads and trapped people in their homes.
More than 34,500 evacuated families were in 631 temporary shelters across affected areas in Mexico, according to a report compiled by the European Commission's Civil Protection And Humanitarian Aid Operations.
Photos posted by Mexico's civil protection agency showed utility workers making repairs but didn't give details on the overall number of outages or how long repairs might take.
There was also no word on when airports might reopen or communications be fully restored.
Some said no warning was provided about the Category 5 storm, and in some hotels, guests were not moved to safer shelter.
"We laid down on the floor, and some between beds," Jakob Sauczuk, who was staying with friends at a beachfront hotel, told the AP. "We prayed a lot."
