Wisconsin police have arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with the killing of Lily Peters, a 10-year-old girl who was found dead blocks from her home. Gruesome details of the child's death also emerged during the court proceeding. Prosecutors described how the young teen allegedly lured Lily, whom he knew, along a wood trail before they say he punched her, beat her with a stick, strangled her and then sexually assaulted her body. A decision has not been made on whether to try him as an adult.
I knew it. 👇 I immediately thought to myself this boy had to have watched his father do this to someone else and copied his father. The boy was copying someone who did the same exact thing to someone else. Investigators need to ask the boy if he watched someone do this and who, what, where it was. (emphasis mine)

The father of the 14-year-old Wisconsin boy accused of murdering 10-year-old Lily Peters is a convicted pedophile, according to a new report.

The murder suspect’s dad had served three years in prison for being in possession of child pornography depicting young girls, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.

In a 2020 letter sent from behind bars to a judge begging him to be allowed to have unsupervised visits with his son, the dad described the future accused killer as “the best of me,” the outlet said, citing court documents.

Prosecutors said in court Wednesday that the man’s son, who has not been named by the authorities despite being charged as an adult, punched Lily Peters in the stomach, strangled her to death, struck her with a stick and then sexually assaulted her.

The teen now faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree sexual assault and first-degree sexual assault of a child.

On Wednesday, a judge set the 14-year-old’s bond at $1 million, after the Chippewa Falls District Attorney’s Office detailed the shocking crime in court.

DA Wade Newell claimed that the teen planned to “rape and kill the victim from the get-go when he left the house with the victim to go down the trail.”

Online court records that were reviewed by The Post Thursday showed that the boy’s 37-year-old father, currently living in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, was convicted in July 2017 of 10 counts of possession of child pornography and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to filings in the case, which were obtained by the Daily Mail, police arrested the man after 10 vile images depicting young girls in compromised positions were discovered on his phone.

The man entered state prison in May 2018 and was released in April of last year to begin his supervised probation.

His lawyers, according to the documents, had opposed having him on probation because he could not have unsupervised visits with him son, whom he described in a letter to a judge as “the best of me.”

The convicted pedophile’s entry on Wisconsin’s sex offender website indicates that his registration ends in April 2039.

Peters — who knew her accused killer — had been in Chippewa Falls visiting her aunt over the weekend when she was reported missing Sunday by her father after she failed to return home.

The following morning, her body was found in a wooded area near a walking trail just blocks from her aunt’s house.

On Tuesday evening, Chippewa Falls Police Chief Matthew Kelm said a juvenile had been arrested in connection with the case but declined to provide further details.

Her remains were taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office in Minnesota, where additional forensic testing was underway.

The boy, identified only by his initials, appeared in adult court in Chippewa County by video from a juvenile detention center Wednesday. Judge Benjamin Lane agreed to DA Newell’s request for $1 million cash bond.

Lane said the high bond was necessary to protect the community given the teen’s “statements regarding his intentions and his statements regarding that when he did get off the trail, he punched the victim in the stomach, knocked her to the ground, essentially strangled her, hit her with a stick, before strangling her to the point of death — before he then sexually assaulted her,” Newell told the judge at the bond hearing.

The defense had asked for $100,000 cash bond, arguing that the boy is a not a flight risk because he is too young to drive.  👈😬 Whaaat the...?! (emphasis mine)

USA: Democrat-Run Milwaukee's City-County Carjacking and Reckless Driving Task Force Issued A 35-page Final Report In June 2020. City Officials And Concerned Citizens Trying To Get Laws Passed.

FOX6 News Milwaukee published April 27, 2022: Milwaukee's City-County Carjacking and Reckless Driving Task Force issued a 35-page final report in June 2020. FOX6 Investigators found a driver whose record of traffic violations is two pages longer.
One highlighted Milwaukee reckless driver has been stopped 35 times in 3 years for driving through red lights, not stopping at designated stop signs, passing intersection, and reckless speeding. Oh and get this, he's driving with NO LICENSE PLATE ON CAR, NO CAR REGISTRATION, NO INSURANCE, AND NO DRIVER'S LICENSE! They even record themselves terrorizing neighborhoods with their cars. This one reckless driver was given 35 citations that he never paid and was allowed to continue driving WITH NO DRIVER'S LICENSE. Like WTH is wrong with Democrats thinking this is okay? This has been allowed to go on for years in Milwaukee. This is what it will be like in Los Angeles with Commie Democrat District Attorney Gascon in charge. Police don't bother arresting criminals because the Commie Democrat District Attorney passed a NO BAIL or ZERO BAIL policy. Criminals get arrested and immediately released to continue terrorizing the community they're in. Now the officials In Milwaukee are whining this has to stop after passing soft on crime laws or laws to favor repeat offenders to appease the likes of Black Lives Matter and other anti-police and anti-prison organizations like them. Seriously, how could they not see this would be the result of NO ARRESTS, NO PUNISHMENTS for out of control delinqents? Watch the video, these officials are shocked. I'm glad they're finally doing something about this matter. But to my fellow Angelenos, this is what's coming if we don't put an end to Gascon as our LA District Attorney and his love for criminals and NO BAIL policies. And by the way, LA Mayoral candidate Rick Caruso co-hosted a fundraiser for the Commie Democrat Gascon who is ONE OF MANY destroying Los Angeles. Caruso claims to support the Gascon recall. However, Caruso helped put Gascon in his LA District Attorney position in the first place. Caruso knew what pro-criminal Commie policies Gascon advocated and who Gascon's Commie heavyweight supporters were. (emphasis mine)

City officials and concerned citizens alike are looking for ways to put the brakes on the “Milwaukee Slide.”

Jordan Morales, a member of a concerned citizens group called the Sherman Park Reckless Driving Commission, is standing on a corner of the intersection of Sherman Boulevard and Burleigh Street, which he says is plagued by dangerous driving. He joined the group, which meets regularly with city and law enforcement officials, after he moved to the neighborhood three years ago and “immediately noticed” the driving problems here.

“Reckless driving is the No. 1 quality of life issue in Milwaukee, easily,” Morales says, especially in Sherman Park. He’s interrupted by a truck that loudly roars through the intersection going at least twice the posted 30 mph speed limit. Other problems Morales notes are people running red lights, and then he points out a car engaging in an obnoxious and dangerous maneuver that’s so common it has its own nickname: the “Milwaukee Slide” It’s when a driver uses the turn, parking or – as in this particular case – a bike lane to zoom ahead and pass traffic on the right.

“It gets on everyone’s nerves because we’re all waiting in line, and then this person thinks the rules of the road don’t apply to them and they can skip everyone,” Morales says. “I’d say it’s just part of the rotten driving culture that we have in the city of Milwaukee, and it’s something that needs to be fixed. We’ve let it go for far too long.”

Someone who agrees with that is Mayor Cavalier Johnson. He’s made addressing driving problems one of the three major points in his thus far brief administration, along with shootings and policing. And it’s an issue he’s very familiar with. As a former alderman representing the North Side’s 2nd District, he had to grapple with some of the streets that see the most reckless driving: 76th, Fond du Lac, Silver Spring, Capitol.

“Capitol Drive is probably the most notorious street in the city for reckless driving,” Johnson says. “I have folks in my district or who live nearby who have told me they’re afraid to cross Capitol Drive to the closest local grocery store in our district because of reckless driving.”

Johnson sees several causes of the problem.

“I was fortunate to have a job so I could afford driver’s ed classes, but not everyone can, and that doesn’t mean they’re not driving,” Johnson says. He also cites the “no-pursuit policy” that was in place with the Milwaukee Police Department until 2017, which prevented police from chasing a suspect unless they knew they had committed a violent felony. That was intended to stop high-speed chases over stolen cars that often ended in fatal crashes, but Johnson says it also fostered a culture of lawlessness on the roads. “I’ve heard police say that people would speed by flipping them off because they knew they wouldn’t be pursued,” Johnson says.

A city-county task force with members from the mayor’s office, police department, municipal court, health department and other agencies studied the issue for a year and a half, issuing its findings in June 2020. The report focuses on three key areas in the fight to curb reckless driving: changing the city’s streetscape, boosting enforcement and accountability, and prevention and education.

Among the board’s many recommendations were public awareness campaigns, wider availability of driver’s ed classes, increased reckless driving penalties, and re-engineered roads to slow traffic.

Ald. Michael Murphy, the task force’s chair, notes that he followed up by adding a budget amendment to “allocate money towards prevention and education, and created a program where we distributed grants to 19 community organizations.”

Johnson says he will pursue more of the committee’s recommendations and adds that his own plan, which he calls S.T.A.N.D. for Safer Streets, already reflects many of them. “An all-hands-on-deck approach to take a stand against reckless driving will be my top priority,” he said at a December press conference unveiling his plan.

On the enforcement front, MPD Chief Jeffrey Norman created a new Traffic Safety Unit in winter of 2021, reallocating 20 officers to focus on reckless driving. A crime analyst assigned to the unit reviews data and citizen complaints to steer its officers to problem areas.

Capt. Jeffrey Sunn, who oversees the unit, says that in their first year the Traffic Safety Unit issued about 21,500 citations. “Over half those were speeding violations,” Sunn says, and another 4,000 or so were licensing issues.

Equally important is the need for safe street design, which involves reworking streets with a “road diet” or slowing traffic by narrowing or reducing lanes, switching car lanes with bike lanes and pedestrian islands, and creating barriers to stop moves like the Milwaukee Slide.

Sunn says such measures have already proven to be effective in some areas. In Riverwest, the Locust Avenue bridge over the Milwaukee River now has bike lanes protected by signs and concrete partitions. In Washington Heights, on North Avenue between 55th and 60th streets, every corner has a semicircle of white and green plastic rods bolted to the road to deter motorists from “sliding” into the bike lanes.

Similar arrangements of sticks and planters are found on 27th Street between Wisconsin and Highland avenues, and on the Hawley Road bridge over the Menomonee Valley. “Since the planters and sticks were placed in that area, taking two travel lanes down to one, we have seen a drastic decrease in accidents along that corridor,” Sunn says. “This is also true along North Avenue and Locust Street.” He adds that although there was a recent fatal accident on Hawley, “overall the numbers from the traffic sticks along that route has helped in the decrease of accidents.”

This success ties into part of Johnson’s plan that he wants to build on – a call for using tax increment revenue to improve streets to increase safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. “There are a number [of projects] that are happening on the South Side, near the stadium business park, Downtown near Cathedral Square Park and on Water Street, and in my own former aldermanic district on Capitol and Fond du Lac,” Johnson says. “The investments we make in infrastructure will prioritize individuals rather than a sole focus on moving vehicles around.”

What? 😑 First of all, the delinquents responsible for reckless driving are not going to school. Second, these reckless drivers don't have a driver's license. That should be a must have to drive period. And in order to obtain a driver's license, the person MUST ATTEND DRIVER'S EDUCATION and pass a driver's written test and pass an actual driving test to be allowed to drive on public roads. The reckless drivers need to have their cars impounded and drivers arrested for not paying any of their citations and other violations. Take away the cars they're driving with no license plate, no insurance, no car registration. I mean, come on what is wrong with Democrats man. This is ridiculous.  (emphasis mine)

Monique Meese is worried about reckless driving in Milwaukee — a deadly threat that Acting Mayor Cavalier Johnson has declared a public health crisis.

Yet she feels hopeful for the next generation of drivers, which includes her 17-year-old daughter, Alannah.

The reason? More young people now have access to affordable driver education through the Milwaukee Recreation Driver Education program.

The City-County Carjacking and Reckless Driving Task Force, which includes government officials and community members, has identified expanding access to driver education as a way to combat reckless driving.

Such efforts are greatly needed because “Milwaukee is on a whole different level and has been getting worse” when it comes to dangerous driving, Meese said.

Her daughter, a Rufus King High School junior, is one of more than 7,600 students to participate in the driver education program since it relaunched in 2016.

Now called MPS Drive, the program had been on a 10-year hiatus at Milwaukee Public Schools because of a lack of funding before advocates pushed to bring it back.

Meese said her daughter began her classes virtually in September and was initially nervous to hit the roads. But when the time came for Alannah to demonstrate her skills in person after she completed the written exam, she was ready.

“My daughter felt confident when going in to take the road test and felt that she would not have passed without taking the lessons,” Meese said.

Alannah is now one of 4,855 to earn their probationary license through the program since 2016, said Jodie Donabar, supervisor of driver education for Milwaukee Recreation, also known as MKE REC.

Teen drivers were involved in 3,278 Milwaukee County crashes resulting in 13 deaths and 1,379 injuries in 2021, according to the most recent Wisconsin Department of Transportation data. Speed was identified as a factor in 551 of those crashes and in 10 deaths. In total, there were 86 road fatalities in Milwaukee County in 2021, with speed being a factor in 36 deaths.

Road deaths surge nationwide

Communities nationwide are seeing higher casualties from speeding and reckless driving — particularly during the pandemic. That includes elsewhere in Wisconsin, where residents are pushing for solutions in cities including Madison and Appleton.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration projects that 31,720 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes from January through September 2021, up 12% from projections a year earlier.

“We have to change a culture that accepts as inevitable the loss of tens of thousands of people in traffic crashes,” Steven Cliff, NHTSA deputy administrator, said in a Feb. 1 statement. “This will require a transformational and collaborative approach to safety on our nation’s roads.”

Wisconsin saw about 601 traffic deaths in 2021, according to preliminary state data — above the 2017-20 average of 578.

With deaths mounting in Milwaukee, Johnson in December declared reckless driving a public health crisis — his first official act as mayor after replacing Tom Barrett, who resigned to become ambassador to Luxembourg. The issue has drawn significant attention in Johnson’s campaign to retain office, with Johnson calling for a boost to driver education, traffic enforcement and community engagement around the issue. He faces former Ald. Bob Donovan, who has said “an atmosphere of lawlessness” around driving has emerged in Milwaukee and that the city needs to grow its police force to keep up.

Impact of COVID

Classes through MKE REC have run at reduced capacity since the pandemic began, first just online and then virtually and in person at 16 public high schools, Donabar said. The program returned to full capacity this month, but due to the increase in COVID-19 cases, all classes have moved online for now. The classes for January and February filled up in four hours, she said, while 800 slots for March and April have also been filled.

“Our goal is to reach as many students as we can to give them the tools to be a safe driver,” she said. “Then they can drive responsibly and on their own.”

Juan Garcia, who’s been driving for two years, earned his license in 2019 after participating in the program while a student at Carmen High School’s Southeast Campus.

He said his instructor taught him important safety lessons such as keeping both hands on the wheel at all times and to always look both ways at four-way stops. He said he’s happy he learned to drive responsibly, something he wishes he saw more of in the city.

“There’s a lot of people who really have a heart and like to keep safe, while others want to rush all the time,” he said.

The classes for Milwaukee Public Schools students cost $35, which covers the cost of the permit itself while classroom lessons and behind-the-wheel instruction are free. Non-MPS students can also take classes through Milwaukee Recreation for $150. Driver education courses offered at private businesses can cost upward of $300.

Classes praised

Municipal Court Judge Derek Mosley, a member of the City-County Carjacking and Reckless Driving Task Force, said the classes are essential.

“The major reason why it’s so key to reducing reckless driving is because at least people are getting a basic education and understanding of the rules of the road when they obtain their permit and receive their driver’s licenses,” Mosley said. “That wasn’t happening before driver’s ed.”

He said the gap in driver education has affected two generations — those who didn’t have access to classes and those who are learning from the examples of those drivers.

Mosley said the young people who come into his courtroom for driving infractions know when they’re speeding. But he said they are unaware that other common reckless driving practices, such as baselining, which is driving in the parking, bike or turn lane, are illegal.

“Some people don’t even know what yellow lights mean or how to drive on roundabouts,” said Mosley, adding that he’d like to see options such as attending traffic safety school for those who come into his courtroom.

He also wants novice drivers to be aware that if they receive a ticket for a failure to yield, they must complete a state-required course — in addition to any other penalties — or risk having their driving privileges suspended.

People should also be warned that if they are caught driving while smoking marijuana, they will be charged with driving under the influence, and there is no reduced penalty for minors.

“It affects your driver’s license, you have to complete an AODA (alcohol and other drug abuse) course, and it affects the insurance you have to get,” Mosley said. “With the fine, which is almost $1,000, the insurance and other legal fees and repercussions, it’s all very costly.”

Donabar said the driver education program benefits students— and their families.

“As their student goes through the program, the families are going to start learning some of it and take it to heart, too,” she said. “They can serve as an example of how to be a safe driver.”

USA: Reckless Driver Speeding Over 100 mph Crashes Straight Into Side Center Of Albuquerque School Bus With Students Inside And Causing It To Flip. Suspect Gets NO JAIL Waiting For Trial.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New video released by the Albuquerque Police Department shows the chaotic and terrifying moments when a car crashed into a school bus, causing it to roll over onto its side in February. One second, kids are talking and laughing; the next, they are trying to figure out what happened. The video shows the middle schoolers piled on top of each other, unable to get up after the car hits the bus.

The impact was so great that kids were thrown from one side of the bus to the other. In slow motion, the video shows the moment the car hit the center of the bus. The bus driver only had a split second to react.

It then shows the bus driver and kids on board trying to get free, but they are rattled and confused. In the back of the bus is where it was a much more serious situation.

The video shows kids trying to help their friends get free. One girl had a broken pelvis. Another boy, who seconds earlier was walking down the aisle, was thrown so hard he was unable to get up.

The bus driver then crawls over the seats to help the kids who are trying desperately to get out. Some of the kids were already on the phone with their parents while others crawled out of the window. The rest crawled out of the emergency door.

It isn’t long before bystanders arrive to help. Slowly, everyone makes their way off the bus with help from people who saw the crash. However, one boy remains stuck. People come to his aid and got him out.

The students were from George I. Sanchez Community Collaborative School. According to a spokesperson for Albuquerque Public Schools, there were 23 students on board at the time of the crash. Seven students on board and the bus driver were sent to the hospital for injuries. According to the criminal complaint, a 14-year-old suffered a pelvic fracture and a 13-year-old suffered a femur fracture – both injuries requiring surgery.

The driver of the car that hit the bus was Mario Perez. He is facing two counts of great bodily harm by vehicle. The District Attorney’s Office says those charges were filed by the officer. More charges related to the other kids could be added once it makes its way through their office to District Court.

A new video released by the Albuquerque Police Department sheds light on the frightening moments when a car crashed into a school bus in New Mexico in February.

The driver of the Ford Mustang that crashed into the bus was allegedly racing another Ford Mustang, according to police. One witness estimated that the cars hit speeds of 110 miles per hour; the posted speed limit for the area of the crash is 40 miles per hour.

The recently-released video analyzed by NPR shows the terrifying impact of the Feb. 23 crash from inside the school bus. About 23 children were riding the bus at the time of the incident.

The video shows that, at one moment, the young children were talking and laughing. Then a child lets out a scream and the bus pitches to one side, throwing the kids across the bus and on top of one another.

Seven children were transported to area hospitals following the crash, the police said.

The driver that crashed into the bus, Mario Perez, was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital for a broken femur, according to police.

Perez spent time in the hospital, was arrested upon his release, and was charged with great bodily harm by vehicle, according to the Albuquerque Police Department. He was released from jail pending trial.

The driver of the other Ford Mustang allegedly took off following the crash. The investigation is still ongoing.

According to the National Safety Council, riding in a school bus is safer than walking or riding in a car.

In 2020, about 4,800 people were injured in school bus-related crashes nationwide, according to the group.

Three reputed gang bosses suspected of running the Mexican Mafia’s criminal operations in Orange County were charged along with 28 others in a sprawling racketeering case that included two murders and six attempted murders, federal authorities said Wednesday.

A 33-count indictment described a tightly organized structure of Orange County street and jail gangs that reported to bosses who collected “taxes” on drug deals and used violence to enforce discipline in the rackets they were accused of running.

“All drug dealers who operated in an area controlled by the OC Mexican Mafia were required to pay a percentage of their profits from the sale of drugs to the enterprise,” the indictment said. “If the drug dealer did not pay, he would not be allowed to sell drugs in that area, under threat of assault and even death.”

Failure to make monthly payments to the Mexican Mafia, known as La Eme, could get an entire gang “greenlighted,” meaning members would be severely assaulted, according to the indictment.

Since 2016, the “brothers” in charge of the Mexican Mafia’s Orange County criminal activities were Johnny Martinez, 46, Robert Aguirre, 49, and Dennis Ortiz, 59, prosecutors said. They were each charged with racketeering conspiracy and other crimes. They oversaw a network of gangs that thrived on murder, extortion, robbery and drug trafficking, the indictment said.

Among the crimes alleged as part of the conspiracy were the fatal shootings in 2017 of two people identified only by their initials, R.R. and R.V. Prosecutors gave no details about how R.R. died, but said R.V. was lured into a vehicle, shot seven times in the back of the head and body and left dead on a street in the city of Orange.

One of the alleged attempted murders was a reputed gang member whose throat was slit while he was detained at the maximum-security Theo Lacy jail in Orange, authorities said, because he’d threatened to talk to law enforcement about the Mexican Mafia.

One of the defendants, Michael Cooper, 44, was stabbed in the head and back in January 2018, then cut in the throat and face in December 2019 after falling out of favor with Martinez and Aguirre, according to the indictment.

“The subjects of this investigation engaged in some of the most horrific acts imaginable,” said Ryan L. Korner, the special agent in charge of IRS Criminal Investigation in Los Angeles.

Tracy Wilkison, the U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, announced the indictment outside an FBI office in Orange with officials from the FBI, IRS, Drug Enforcement Administration and local law enforcement agencies.

The suspects were indicted by a federal grand jury on April 20. Twenty-one of the suspects were already in custody, nine were arrested Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, and one, Mark Cooper, 32, is a fugitive who has lived in Fountain Valley, Calif., and Tualatin, Ore., according to the U.S. attorney’s office. Mark and Michael Cooper are not related.

The indictment was unsealed Wednesday.

Lawyers for most of the suspects could not be reached.

Meghan Blanco, an attorney for defendant Brenda Vanessa Campos Martinez of Tustin, said federal authorities seemed to be wasting resources prosecuting defendants already serving long state prison sentences for other crimes.

“Most of these people were in local custody already facing life,” she said. “I don’t understand what the government was doing.”

Blanco said she was not yet familiar enough with the case to comment on the specific extortion and drug trafficking allegations against Campos Martinez, 35, who was arrested Wednesday morning. Blanco was expecting her to be released later on bail.

The main racketeering conspiracy charge was filed against Johnny Martinez, Aguirre, Ortiz and eight others. It accused them of using murder, kidnapping, robbery and assault against rival gangs, witnesses to the group’s misconduct and fellow Mexican Mafia figures who showed disrespect to the crime syndicate.

In one of the attempted murders, a victim identified as F.B. was attacked “for threatening to discuss the Mexican Mafia with law enforcement,” the indictment said. “F.B.'s throat was slit and he was repeatedly kicked and stomped, causing serious bodily injuries to his face, head, throat, and body.”

Other charges in the indictment include violent crimes in aid of racketeering activity and conspiracy to distribute heroin and methamphetamine.

The investigation included multiple undercover buys of heroin and meth from dealers selling drugs on behalf of Martinez, according to federal authorities.

BILOXI, Miss. — The possible suspect in the fatal shooting of the owner and two employees of a Mississippi Gulf Coast motel and subsequent death of a person shot during a carjacking was found dead after a standoff with police Wednesday, authorities said.

Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer identified the possible suspect as 32-year-old Jeremy Alesunder Reynolds.

Gulfport Police Department’s incoming chief, Adam Cooper, said Reynolds holed up at a Gulfport convenience store after fleeing from a stolen vehicle. Gulfport is just west of Biloxi, where the shootings took place at the Broadway Inn Express motel.

Switzer told news outlets that motel owner Mohammad Moeini, 51; Laura Lehman, 61; and Chad Green, 55, were killed at the motel. Lehman and Green both lived and worked at the motel.

WLOX-TV reported that one witness described a chaotic scene at the motel, with people fleeing.

Police said that after the motel shootings, another man was shot during a carjacking in Gulfport, and he later died in surgery. Switzer identified him as William Waltman, 52.

Cooper said police fired teargas into the store where Reynolds was holed up. After trying to negotiate with him and getting no response, police went into the store and found him dead, Cooper said. An autopsy will be performed to determine how he died.

The family of a woman killed in a West Los Angeles crash involving a speeding Lamborghini last year will receive at least $18.85 million after a wrongful death settlement was reached with the then 17-year-old driver, the family’s attorney announced Wednesday.

The law firm representing the family called the agreement one of the largest settlements in California history for a single plaintiff in a wrongful death case.

Monique Muñoz, 32, was killed on Feb. 17, 2021, when she was heading home from her job at UCLA Health.

She was heading west on Olympic Boulevard and was waiting to turn left on Overland Avenue when the driver of a Lamborghini SUV ran a red light and crashed into her vehicle going more than 100 mph.

The impact caused Muñoz’s car to nearly split in half and she died at the scene.

The driver, Brendan Khuri, suffered moderate injuries and was hospitalized. He was arrested nearly a week after the deadly crash and eventually admitted to a gross vehicular manslaughter charge. Last October, he was sentenced to seven to nine months in a juvenile camp.

The defendant’s name was previously withheld because he was underage at the time of the crash. He is the son of James Khuri, a local wealthy entrepreneur.

Before the crash, Khuri and his father posted on social media engaging in “illegal speed exhibitions,” on L.A. surface streets, the family attorney, Daniel Ghyczy, said.

“Although Brendan Khuri had only received his license a few months prior to this tragedy, he had already had several run-ins with law enforcement, one of which resulted in his Lamborghini SUV being impounded by the Beverly Hills Police Department,” Ghyczy said in a news release.

Citing tow records, Ghyczy said the SUV was returned to the defendant by his father less than 48 hours after it was impounded, and three months before the fatal crash.

Khuri was charged with a misdemeanor for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

During a restitution hearing on the settlement Wednesday, a judge decided to continue the hearing to a later date, and the family’s total monetary recovery could exceed $25 million.

“Today is a significant milestone because the Muñoz family can finally get some closure for this horrific tragedy,” Ghyczy said. “It was never about money for the Munoz family, it was about acknowledgement of Brendan Khuri’s misconduct that resulted in the death of their only daughter and to ensure that he was held accountable. Today’s settlement is a testament to their efforts and is a step closer to justice.”

An $18.8 million-settlement has been reached between the family of a woman killed in a crash with a red light-running Lamborghini SUV and the family of the 17-year-old who was behind the wheel.

The settlement was reached on behalf of the family of 32-year-old Monique Munoz, who was killed on Feb. 17, 2021, when a Lamborghini ran a red light at the intersection of Olympic Boulevard and Overland Avenue and slammed into her vehicle at over 100 miles per hour as she tried to turn left during rush hour traffic. She had been on her way home from her job at UCLA Health in Los Angeles.

Brendan Khuri, the 17-year-old son of millionaire businessman James Khuri, was sentenced to 9 months in a juvenile camp after admitting to his part in the crash.

Daniel Ghyczy, one of the attorneys representing the Munoz family, said the case against the Khuri family was never about money.

"The family faced numerous hurdles from both private insurance companies and the LA District Attorney's office, and experienced the harsh realities of racism and bias against those from underserved communities," Ghyczy said in a statement. "The family pleaded for the District Attorney to investigate this case and met with the office dozens of times to advocate for their family."

According to the attorneys, Brendan Khuri and his father often posted video of themselves on social media racing across Los Angeles' busy surface streets, sometimes against each other. Brendan Khuri had only received his license a few months before the fatal crash, and had already had several run-ins with law enforcement, including one that ended up with his Lamborghini SUV being impounded by the Beverly Hills Police Department, the attorneys said. The SUV was returned to Brendan by his father less than two days later, according to tow records.

A restitution hearing on Wednesday was postponed to a later date, when the the Khuri's total monetary recovery will be determined and could exceed $25 million, according to the Munoz family's attorneys.

But for the Munoz family, it was never about the money, but about making sure the driver was held accountable for his actions.

They rallied and protested in the months following the fatal crash, all the while fighting for "Justice for Monique."

CBS reporters spoke with Munoz's mother in late 2021, when Khuri appeared for one of his scheduled court appearances.

"I didn't want to see him. I didn't want to see his family," she said. "At the end of the day, he was the last person to see my daughter alive."

Residents in the West Los Angeles neighborhood, where they remember Munoz on a daily basis with their permanent memorial called "Monique's Tree," rejoiced after hearing the settlement, hoping that her family can finally get the closure they've been searching for.

"All of us on this street, when we heard it, ran out," said Nancy Chang, who detailed the heartbreaking event. "It was heart-wrenching witnessing. ... We were with her throughout, because her family, I don't think they were informed until later that night."

The tree in the neighborhood features a stenciled picture of Munoz's face and a plaque bearing her name. The curb in front of the tree also reads "RIP Monique" in pink letters.

"Losing a loved one is not easy. I'm just praying that they'll find peace," Chang concluded.

James Khuri posted a statement on the settlement on his personal Instagram account, which read:
"As a parent, we hope for the best for our children and words cannot describe how we feel when horrible things happen to our kids. It saddens me that nothing can bring back Ms. Monique Munoz from the car accident between her and my son, and I hope that the $18.85 million insurance settlement will build a new beginning that will honor her spirit. My deepest condolences to those who knew her and miss her."
He has been charged with a misdemeanor for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and is scheduled to make his next court appearance on June 8.

USA: Witnesses Testify DUI Rebecca Grossman Was Driving 81 mph Before Fatally Hitting Two Young Brothers With SUV, Didn’t Stop. She Co-founded The Grossman Burn Center With Her Husband.

They said she was arrested a quarter of a mile away from the scene. For those of you who don't know, DUI is an acronym for "Driving Under the Influence" of alcohol. (emphasis mine)
NBCLA published October 2, 2020: Driver Faces Charges in Killing of Two Children in Westlake Village. There are new details on the crash that killed two brothers in Westlake Village. The woman behind the wheel, according to the police, is the wife of a world-renown plastic surgeon. Gordon Tokumatsu reports for NBC4 News on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020.

Rebecca Grossman was tailing a friend’s SUV and driving as fast as 81 mph on a Westlake Village road before she fatally hit two young brothers in a crosswalk, witnesses testified Tuesday.

After striking the boys, sending one child flying into the air, she braked for only a second but did not stop, according to the testimony.

On the second day of a hearing to determine whether Grossman, 58, should stand trial in the deaths of Jacob and Mark Iskander, ages 8 and 11, on Sept. 29, 2020, two eyewitnesses described how her SUV plowed through the crosswalk on Triunfo Canyon Road. The boys were walking with their family at about 7:10 p.m. and crossing a three-way intersection with a marked crosswalk but no stoplight.

A crash expert also testified that had Grossman slowed from 73 mph — her speed about 550 feet from the crosswalk — to the posted limit of 45 mph, she would not have hit the children because they would have already been at the curb.

“If the car had been going the speed limit for five seconds, there would be no collision,” testified Michael Hale, a veteran collision investigator with the Orange County district attorney’s office.

He testified that data extracted from Grossman’s Mercedes-Benz showed that she was flooring the gas pedal and reached 81 mph about 1.5 seconds before the crash. He said the data showed she then lightly tapped on the brakes for a second, reducing her speed to 73 mph, and took her foot off the gas before she hit the boys.

Yasamin Eftekhari described seeing the two SUVs in her car’s side mirror, passing at high speed and then tapping on their brakes immediately before the crosswalk. Grossman’s white Mercedes was unable to avoid the boys.

“There was a family walking in the road. The white car struck the two kids in the road,” Eftekhari said. She said the vehicle hit its brakes right before hitting the boys and then again after the impact.

“The first child to get hit, he was up against the side [of the road]. I didn’t see the second child get hit,” Eftekhari testified. She said she stopped her car and dashed toward the surviving 5-year-old boy near the curb with his mother, who grabbed him and dived out of the way. “I went and picked him up,” she said, wiping tears from her face.

She said she tried to distract the boy, Zachary, from the scene. His mother, Nancy Iskander, “was crying and screaming,” Eftekhari testified.

Grossman, the 58-year-old co-founder of the Grossman Burn Center with her husband, Dr. Peter Grossman, is charged with two counts of murder, two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, and one count of hit-and-run driving resulting in death in connection with the crash. Grossman faces 34 years to life in prison if convicted. She has pleaded not guilty and is out on $2-million bail.

To get a second-degree murder conviction, prosecutors must prove Grossman acted with implied malice and knew the act of driving at a speed of more than 70 mph in a residential area was dangerous to human life. Prosecutors said Grossman’s history of speeding and warnings she received were a form of notice; she has two prior speeding tickets on a nearby freeway a decade ago and that same year on Kanan Road in Malibu.

Emotions again ran high on the second day of the preliminary hearing, with several breaks as tears flowed with Eftekhari on the witness stand. “This is one of the most difficult cases I have been involved in,” Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Shellie Samuels said.

Jake Sands, who was in Eftekhari’s front passenger seat, said Grossman’s Mercedes and a black SUV driven by former Dodger Scott Erickson came up behind them “going fast, above the speed limit, freeway speed or maybe faster.”

He said Erickson’s SUV passed them first, switching to the left lane, followed by Grossman’s white SUV. Sands said they were about three feet apart.

As the SUVs passed, Sands said he saw the three boys and their mother in the crosswalk ahead, crossing toward the lake. They were on roller blades, a skateboard and a scooter.

He said as the black SUV approached the family first, the driver tapped his brakes. “It swerved and avoided the family right before,” he testified.

Grossman’s Mercedes 430 GLE was just behind, and the driver “tapped on their brakes” and then drove through the crosswalk, Sands testified.

“I saw one of the boys go to the right,” he said.

Sands said he heard the sound of a crash and saw the boy who had been thrown into the air, Jacob, fall to the ground in the bicycle lane near the right curb.

Sands said he saw the other boy, Mark, farther down the road near the median. After impact, he testified, the white Mercedes’ brake lights went on again, but it did not stop.

During cross-examination, lawyers for Grossman repeatedly attempted to portray Erickson’s car as blocking Grossman’s view of the family in the crosswalk ahead.

Grossman’s lawyers have argued she never left the scene and stopped farther down the road, but Deputy Dist. Atty Ryan Gould repeatedly got the two eyewitnesses to say she did not stop near the scene.

Eftekhari said that after the boys were hit, Grossman’s SUV braked “for a split-second” but continued to drive down the street.

Hale, the crash expert, said Grossman’s Mercedes cuts off the fuel to the engine after a crash, which would eventually force the driver to stop. Such a fuel cut-off prevents fire and still allows braking.

During the first day of testimony, Nancy Iskander testified that neither Grossman nor Erickson stopped. “They didn’t stop before the intersection. They didn’t stop at the intersection. They didn’t stop when an 11-year-old was on the hood of the car. ... Nobody stopped,” Iskander said.

USA: Texas Republican Governor Abbott Invites Elon Musk To Bring Twitter To Texas Alongside Tesla, SpaceX. Texas Man Offers Elon Musk 100 Acres Of Free Land To Move Twitter's Headquarters. 😍

Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott invited Elon Musk to move Twitter from California to the Lone Star State after the billionaire’s purchase of the social media platform on Monday.

Abbott shared the invitation on Monday evening after the announcement of Musk’s offer to purchase Twitter had been approved.

“@elonmusk. Bring Twitter to Texas to join Tesla, SpaceX & the Boring company,” Abbott wrote.

Abbott has been a strong advocate for both free speech and for businesses moving to Texas.

The governor also highlighted on Sunday that his state has the lowest business operating costs in America.

Abbott commented on his state’s job growth last week as well, noting in another Twitter post that Texas has added more than 30,100 jobs in March and 152,200 jobs in 2022.
Abbott may have some competition if Musk decides to move the Twitter headquarters. South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem was also quick to extend an invitation to Musk.
Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis was also among conservative governors to applaud Musk’s purchase of Twitter.

“@elonmusk’s offer to buy Twitter is a good deal for shareholders and raises the prospect that the platform will be a place where free speech can thrive, not a tool for narrative enforcement,” he wrote.
The Daily Wire previously reported that Twitter announced late on Monday that it has entered a definitive agreement to be acquired by Elon Musk for $54.20 per share in a deal valued at $44 billion.

The transaction was unanimously approved by Twitter’s board and is expected to close this year subject to the approval of Twitter’s shareholders and other regulatory approvals.

“Under the terms of the agreement, Twitter stockholders will receive $54.20 in cash for each share of Twitter common stock that they own upon closing of the proposed transaction,” Twitter said in a statement. “The purchase price represents a 38% premium to Twitter’s closing stock price on April 1, 2022, which was the last trading day before Mr. Musk disclosed his approximately 9% stake in Twitter.”

Twitter headquarters is currently located in California. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has yet to personally comment on the announcement of Musk’s purchase of Twitter.

Erin Mellon, a spokesperson for Newsom, told Cal Matters: “Even after Elon Musk announced Tesla’s move to Texas, they expanded in California. And Elon has started all of his businesses in California, presumably because he knows this is where innovation and talent lives. … Governor Abbott should focus on the people and business whose employees feel threatened, attacked and intimidated by his misogynistic and anti-LGBTQ agenda.”

On April 9, Musk posted a now-deleted tweet that asked if Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters should be turned into a “homeless shelter since no one shows up anyway” due to the company’s work-from-home policy.

With more than 1.5 million votes cast, more than 91% of respondents responded yes to Musk’s Twitter poll.
Musk later wrote about the idea, “I’m serious about this one btw.”

The offer follows Gov. Greg Abbott inviting Musk to move Twitter's offices to the Lone Star State.

An Austin-area man is offering Elon Musk free land to use for Twitter's headquarters should the billionaire choose to relocate his newly purchased company from San Francisco to Texas. Twitter accepted Musk's deal to buy the social media platform for $44 billion on Monday, which prompted Gov. Greg Abbott to invite the richest man in the world to move its headquarters to the Lone Star State and join three of Musk's other companies.

Now Jim Schwertner, president and CEO of Schwertner Farms, is making his own offer to Musk. "Elon Musk, Move Twitter to Schwertner, TX. 38 Miles North of Austin in Williamson County, and we will give you 100 Acres for FREE," Schwertner wrote on Twitter Tuesday.
"We think it’s a good idea, especially when you’ve got Samsung coming to Taylor," Schwertner told Austonia. "I mean, this area is exploding and we want to be part of this explosive growth."

Other social media giants with headquarters in Central Texas include Meta and TikTok. Musk's companies Tesla, SpaceX and the Boring Company are also headquartered in the Lone Star State.

"I just think with all the stuff he's done, he evidently likes Texas, right or he wouldn’t have moved from California," Schwertner said about Musk. "And I want to be part of his plan if he'll come visit with us."

Schwertner reiterated his offer on Twitter Wednesday in an effort to gain Musk's attention. He told Austonia his offer is a "serious gesture to help the citizens around Williamson County."

Musk has yet to respond to or publicly acknowledge Schwertner's offers, only posting on Twitter Wednesday about free speech on the platform and SpaceX activities.

It was probably Yuval Noah Harari who reported me to blogger since he believes he is god of this world. What I take issue with is NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO VISIT MY GlobalAwareness101 website. You don't have to read what I share. The fact that a person is going out of their way to report my messages as offensive is obscene and Google Blogger is accepting the censorship. This is the second time an evil person reported a post to Google Blogger and they unpublished it. This is wild. (emphasis mine)

We see the extent of his authorized rule in His sovereignty over Satan and demons. Mark 1:27 He (Jesus Christ) commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him. Yes they do. They did then, they do now. Satan cannot touch the children of God without permission 1 John 5:18.
The Sovereignty of Jesus and His Unstoppable Mission
written by John Piper
[source: DesiringGod.org]

My aim in this message is, first, that you would be filled with a well-grounded amazement at the absolute authority and sovereignty of Jesus Christ over this world and over his unstoppable mission to gather his sheep from all the unreached peoples of the world, and, second, that many of you would hear the voice of God calling you irresistibly to leave your home and go to a place of greater need for the everlasting good of lost people and for the fame of Jesus Christ.

And I do mean you. You in your 20s finishing college or beginning your career — married or single. You in your 30s and 40s approaching the apex of your strength and your achievements. You in your 50s and 60s who feel so entrenched and yet are restless and sensing that there must be something more for the next 25 years. And yes, you in your 70s and 80s who have been lied to all your life by the American establishment about what the final chapter of your life is for. I have been sent by God from Minneapolis to Greenville, South Carolina, so that some of you — some of the least expected of you — will hear the voice of God calling you to leave your homes and go to place a greater need for the everlasting good of lost people and for the fame of Jesus Christ.

And please, don't say to me in your mind right now, “Don’t you know that America is going to hell in a hand-basket? Don’t you know that people are lost and broken and needy right here in my neighborhood?” The answer is, “Yes, I do know that. And if you are called by God to bring an everlasting blessing to the people of your neighborhood, or your city, for the fame of Jesus Christ, nobody will be happier about that than I am.” Let's be done with that dichotomy! Okay? God delights in those who pour themselves out for the sake of his name anywhere! Anywhere!

So, I will say it again — in the hope that all the lovers of Jesus here might rejoice, staying or going — my aim is that you would be filled with a well-grounded amazement at the absolute authority and sovereignty of Jesus Christ over this world and over his unstoppable mission to gather his sheep from all the unreached peoples of the world, and that many of you would hear the voice of God calling you irresistibly, joyfully, to leave your home and go to a place of greater need for the everlasting good of lost people and for the fame of Jesus Christ. For there are places — and peoples — of greater need, by almost every measure.

And all of this under the banner of, “Thank you, Jesus, for my father, Bill Piper, who kept his hand on the plow of Bible-saturated evangelism for over 65 years, and who founded this remarkable ministry, Christian Discipleship International, that we are celebrating tonight, and who sowed the seeds of love for God, and love for the Bible, and love for world missions in the sinful heart of his son, John Piper.”

So let’s begin with a massive statement from Jesus about his sovereign rule over this world and over his mission in Matthew 28:18–20.
Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
The courage to go, the audacity to make disciples for Jesus from followers of other lords and other religions, the authority to baptize in the name of the Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, are all based on the rock solid foundation of the words — and the reality — “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

I have three questions to pose about this foundation: 1) Who gave Jesus this authority which he has today, and did he not always have this authority even in eternity past? 2) How much authority is included in “all authority in heaven and earth”? 3) What does this confidence in Christ’s total authority unleash in the lives those who really believe this?

1. Who gave Jesus this authority which he has today, and did he not always have this authority even in eternity past?

In Matthew 28:18, Jesus said, “All authority has been given to me.” By whom? The answer is: God the Father gave it to him.
Matthew 11:27. All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

John 3:35. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.

John 13:3. Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God . . . knelt down and washed the apostles’ feet.

Ephesians 1:20–21. God raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.

John 17:2. Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.
That’s the closest parallel to Matthew 28:18 — “. . . authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.” What a picture of absolute authority in the great enterprise of world evangelization! The Father knows his sheep and they are his. He gives them to the Son. He gives life-giving authority to the Son. And the Son gives life to all that the Father has given him!

So when Jesus says, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me,” he means “has been given to me by my Father.”
To which we then ask, “Did he not always have this authority even in eternity past?”
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. (John 1:1–4)
Jesus was — always has been, always will be — God! He is with his Father the creator of the universe. He did not become authoritative at his incarnation or his exaltation. But here’s the distinction. Before the incarnation, God the Son existed, but Jesus the God-man did not yet exist. Before the incarnation God the Son existed with all authority. But the God-man, Jesus Christ, had not yet died for sinners, and the sentence of condemnation hanging over his people had not yet been stripped from Satan’s hand by the shedding of his Jesus’s blood. But it is precisely the God-man, Jesus Christ, and the crucified and risen Savior, triumphant over sin and Satan, and exalted to the right hand of God and installed as the Lord of the universe.

So, yes, the Son of God always had total authority in heaven and on earth. But when he had done the great work of redemption once for all, God exalted him as the God-man, the Redeemer, the Risen One to his right hand and now, as never before, put the rule of the universe, and the mission of the church, into the hands of a man, Jesus of Nazareth, son of Mary, Son of God.

2) So we ask now, secondly, How much authority is included in “all authority in heaven and earth”?
The first thing to say is that this authority is not the authorization of Jesus to potentially rule, but the authorization of Jesus to actually rule. Remember John 17:2, “You have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.” He is authorized to act, not simply to enjoy the right to act. The authority of Jesus in heaven and earth is his authorized rule in heaven and on earth.

And the second thing to say is that what the Father has the authority to do, Jesus has the authority to do, because Jesus said in John 3:35, “The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.” So where we have statements in the Bible that God has the right to do something, we know Jesus has the right to do it.

So how extensive is that authority and that rule — “All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me”? Here are ten biblical sightings of that authority.
1) We see the extent of the authorized rule of the Son of God, first, in his act as the creator of all things. “All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:3). Jesus Christ is the Person who made the heaven and earth, and everything in them.
2) We see the extent of his authorized rule, secondly, in his sustaining the world — holding it in being by the word of his power. “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power” (Hebrews 1:3). “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17). All the electrons, everywhere in the universe, maintain their path and their speed by the will of Jesus Christ. All the motions of the immaterial souls of men and angels are held in being by Christ., Without his willing, all the material world and all the spiritual world would cease to be.

3) We see the extent of his authorized rule not only in sustaining the natural world, but governing all of nature. “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father” (Matthew 10:29). From the smallest bird, falling randomly from the branch in the jungles of the Amazon, to the most massive Tsunami, Christ rules. “Who then is this [the apostles cried], that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?” (Luke 8:25). The wind and the waves did not get a mind of their own in the 21st century. They still obey him. As does all of nature.
There’s not a plant or flower below,
But makes Thy glories known;
And clouds arise, and tempests blow
By order from Thy throne.
(Isaac Watts: “I Sing the Mighty Power of God”)
4) We see the extent of his authorized rule in his sovereignty over Satan and all his demons. Mark 1:27: “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” Yes they do. They did then, and they do now. And Satan cannot touch the children of God without permission (1 John 5:18).

Everything Satan did to Job he did by permission from God. And that permission so embodied the design of God himself that the inspired writer at the end of the book wrote Job 42:11, “They comforted him for all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him.” Not even Satan in all his ugly designs fails to perform God’s holy purposes.

5) We see the extent of Jesus’s authorized rule in the oversight and governance of all the affairs of history. This is why John calls him King over all kings. “They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful” (Revelation 17:14).

And what this means practically is that no king, no president, no chief, no sheik, no premier, no prime minister, no governor, no mayor, no congressman takes office except that God through Jesus puts him there. Daniel 2 and 4: “He removes kings and sets up kings; . . . The Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will. . . . He does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, ‘What have you done?’” (Daniel 2:21; 4:17, 35). And when the rulers are in place God governs what they do: “The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; he turns it wherever he will” (Proverbs 21:1).

Every decision made by every ruler against the church and mission of Christ will, in time, backfire.

6) We see the extent of his authorized rule in his authority over all disease. When Moses objected that he was slow of speech and tongue, God said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?” (Exodus 4:11). And Jesus has lost none of his power to heal between this day and the first century when “He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him” (Acts 10:38). God can lift any disease he please at any time he please. Therefore, diseases are present or not by his decree, even if Satan is the immediate cause, as he was in the case of Job:
Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. . . . Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die!” But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips. (Job 2:7–10)
Neither Satan, nor viruses, nor bacteria, nor broken chromosomes are sovereign in this world. Jesus is. No disease will stop his mission.

7) We see the extent of Jesus’s authorized rule in God’s sovereignty over the sinful acts of men. Human beings cannot escape the sovereign sway of God by darting down the alley of sin. Oh how crucial this is for world missions. Right at the center of the Christian gospel — the message Jesus commands us to take to all the peoples of the world — is the sovereignty of God over sin — the God-ordained, God-planned, God-governed murder of the Son of God. Acts 4:27–28 are two of the most important verses in the Bible to encourage missionaries that when the worst evil is thrown against the people of God, God means for it to serve his saving plan.
Truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. (Acts 4:27–28)
Herod’s mockery, Pilate’s expediency, the Jewish cry to crucify him, the Gentile soldiers’ bloody crown of thorns and lash — all of it the plan of God: “. . . to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.” And all of it, sin.

Do you have a category in your mind and heart for this biblical truth: God can will that sin come to pass without himself sinning. If you don’t, then what becomes of the gospel? The gospel, Paul says, is this: “Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3). And all the sinful details are spelled out there: Judas’s betrayal, disciples deserting, soldiers gambling. All the ugliness of it was planned. Scripted. And Isaiah cries in chapter 53, “It was the will of the LORD to crush him; he has put him to grief” (Isaiah 53:10) — at the hand of Herod, Pilate, the Jewish leaders, and the Gentiles. God saw to it that we would be saved — by the murder of his Son. And Jesus himself in that very hour was totally in charge: “No one takes my life from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again” (John 10:18).

There never has been, or ever will be, a greater sin than the murder of the Son of God. And if God could govern this sin without being a sinner, he can govern all. God is never intimidated by the sins of men. You don’t need to be intimidated either.

8) The extent of the Jesus’s authority is seen in his sovereignty over conversion. When the rich young ruler turned away from Jesus because he loved his money more, Jesus said, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” And they were astonished, it says, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” And Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God” (Mark 10:23–27).

With man it is impossible to stop loving the world and start loving Jesus. Nobody causes himself to be born again. Nobody raises himself from the dead. But what is impossible with man, is possible for God: “For all things are possible with God” — even the conversion of a million Muslims. I hope you believe this.

9) The extent of Jesus’s authority is seen in his triumph over death — your death.
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (Romans 8:35–37)

“Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:54–58)
Don’t be afraid of death. Don’t fear those who kill the body and can do no more!

10) And therefore, when all is said and done, Jesus has absolute authority and power over the mission of the church, and it cannot fail. “This gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14). “I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18). “I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd” (John 10:16). This mission will not fail!

So my answer to our second question (How much authority is included in “all authority in heaven and earth”?) is: The risen, reigning, King of kings and Lord of lords reigns over this world and over his mission with absolute sovereignty. Nothing is outside his sovereign will. If he meets with resistance, he either allows it for his purposes, or he overcomes it for his purposes. His sovereign purposes are never thwarted.
I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like me,
declaring the end from the beginning
and from ancient times things not yet done,
saying, “My counsel shall stand,
and I will accomplish all my purpose. (Isaiah 46:9–10)
O that we might stand amazed and full of faith and unshakeable boldness at the authority of Jesus Christ over the world, and at his unstoppable mission of God.

Which leads to one last question.

3. What does this confidence unleash in the lives those who really believe this?

1) It unleashes a torrent of hope-filled prayer for God in Christ to do what only he can do: send workers and save sinners. As Paul says in Romans 10:1, “It is my heart’s desire and prayer to God that they may be saved.” Sometimes people say, “Why pray if Christ is sovereign?” To which I answer: “Why pray if he is not sovereign?” When I pray for the people I love most who are lost, or when I pray for the nations of the world, or for the Jewish people, I don’t ask God to make ineffectual suggestions to them. Do you?

No. We say, O God, save them. Take out the heart of stone, and put in a heart of flesh. Cause them to be born again. Raise them from spiritual death. Incline their heart to Jesus. Open their blind eyes. Take away the veil. Give them faith. Overcome all resistance, and make them your own.

That’s the way we pray, because Jesus is sovereign and has the right to do just that. O may God unleash in your heart and family and church a great spirit of bold and confident prayer to the all-sovereign Christ for the people of the world.

2) It unleashes hope-filled, bold and joyful evangelism, even among the hardest peoples of the world. Because nothing is too hard for God. No human heart is beyond the power of God to break. We are called to join God in doing what only God can do.
I am sending you to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me. (Acts 26:17–18)
God sends us to do what only he can do — give spiritual sight to the blind. Don’t spurn this. This is a glorious calling, Christian. Go! Open your mouth. I, Jesus says, do — in my name, and by my power — what only I can do. “We are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal—his omnipotent, life-giving appeal — through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” (2 Corinthians 5:20)

This mission cannot fail. Why would you hold back instead of joining the cause that cannot fail?

3) Finally, the absoluteness of the words, “all authority in heaven and earth has been given to me,” is designed by God in this message to unleash many of you to leave your home and go to a place of greater need for the everlasting good of lost people and for the fame of Jesus Christ. God is doing this. I will pray for you. Please pray for me. Our ministry is not done until we breathe our last.

Amen.
