CROATIA: Croatian Police Shoot Up Minibus That Refused To Stop, Broke Through Roadblock During The Night, Carrying 29 Refugees. Human Trafficker Fled Into The Forest.

Croatian police injured two children when they shot at a minibus carrying refugees in the town of Srb, near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to Croatian media Thursday.
The minibus apparently had entered Croatia illegally during the night, according to news website index.hr.
Despite several attempts by police to stop the vehicle, the driver carried on. When he broke through a roadblock, police opened fire. The driver stopped the minibus shortly thereafter and fled into a forest.
The police found 29 refugees in the minibus. As a result of shots fired two children had suffered injuries, which were described as not life-threatening.
Other passengers needed treatment due to the cramped conditions in which they had traveled, with the minibus being filled beyond its capacity.
The refugees' country of origin has not yet been confirmed.
Refugees have been seeking alternative ways to reach Europe following the closure two years ago of the so-called Balkan route, which included Greece, Macedonia, Serbia and Hungary.
Many of the new routes go through Bosnia and Croatia. Since the beginning of the year, around 3,500 refugees have made it to Bosnia, with the majority of those carrying on towards central Europe.
Rising numbers of refugees have been reported recently in other countries along the south European route, though the numbers are tiny in comparison to those in 2015 and 2016, when around a million refugees made it to Germany and Austria.
DENMARK: A Majority Of Danish Parliament Passes Ban On Islamic Burqa And Niqab Female Covering Starting August 1st.

A majority in Denmark’s parliament has voted in favour of a ban on certain types of face-covering clothing in public, effectively banning the Islamic burqa and niqab from August 1st.
The Liberal, Conservative and Danish People’s parties all voted in favour of the bill, as did the opposition Social Democrats with the exception of MP Mette Gjerskov, thereby securing the majority.
MPs who are not ministers from Libertarian coalition partner Liberal Alliance voted against it, with the exception of one, Henrik Dahl, who voted in favour.
In total, the bill received 75 votes in favour and 30 votes against. Some MPs were absent from the vote in a so-called ‘clearing agreement’ in which all parties allow members to choose not to participate in a vote.
During the weeks-long parliamentary procedure of the bill, the government removed a provision allowing prison sentences as potential punishment for breaking the new law.
Violations of the anti-veil law will result in a 1,000 kroner (134 euros) fine for the first offence and up to 10,000 kroner for breaking the law for the fourth time or more.
The Danish People’s Party (DF) had earlier this week presented an amendment to the proposal that would have provided for prison sentences.
But with no broader support for the harsher punishment, DF voted in favour of the existing form of the bill.
Justice Minister Søren Pape Poulsen has previously stated that Danish police will not forcibly remove veils from women.
“I do not want police officers pulling items of clothing off people – burqas or otherwise. That is not going to happen,” Poulsen told Politiken last month.
“If they live nearby, they will be asked to go home,” Poulsen said at the time.
A further option would be for women to be accompanied to a police station, where they would be collected by a family member, he added.
France was in 2011 the first European country to ban Islamic veils in public by law. DF first raised the possibility of introducing such a ban in Denmark in 2009.
“Parliament has clearly stated that the burqa and niqab do not belong in Denmark. They are incompatible with Danish culture and the foundations on which Denmark is built,” DF's spokesperson on immigration issues Martin Henriksen said.
Asked whether it is Danish to deny individuals the right to choose what to wear, Henriksen said it was “always Danish to protect Denmark”.
“Of course, we have individual freedoms we must protect. But some people use them to promote an ideology that, if they are successful, will mean many more lose their freedoms,” he said.
The actual number of people who currently wear either the burqa or niqab in Denmark is not known precisely.
The most recent figures come from 2010, when a government report estimated the number to be between 150 and 200 women, with the majority of these wearing the niqab, rather than the burqa.
The niqab is a full veil with a small slit for the eyes, while the burqa is a full veil that covers the head and body with a mesh screen over the eyes.

The Coalition and opposition have rejected calls for a ban on the burka. But some countries have introduced the controversial law, most recently Switzerland, which enforced a ban on the full-face veil in July 2016. It means women wearing a burka (full body covering with mesh over the eyes) or niqab (full body covering with a slit for the eyes) could face fines of almost 10,000 euros.
UKIP has long wanted such a ban in the UK. While, in a speech in December last year, Chancellor Angela Merkel called for one in Germany: ”Show your face. The full covering is not permissible and should be banned."
Here is where Muslim women stand on wearing the veil across the world...
France
France was the first European country to ban the burqa in public. It started in 2004, with a clampdown on students in state-run schools displaying any form of religious symbol. But in April 2011, the government went further by bringing in a total public ban on full-face veils. President Nicolas Sarkozy saying they were “not welcome” in France.
Women can be subjected to 150 euro fines and instructions in citizenship for breaking the ban. Anyone who forces a woman to cover her face risks a 30,000 euro fine.
Belgium
Belgium followed closely in France’s footsteps by introducing its own ban on full-face veils in 2011. It outlaws any clothing that obscures people’s faces in public places.
A woman caught wearing a veil can be jailed for up to seven days or forced to pay a 1378 euro fine. The government passed the law almost unanimously.
The Netherlands
In 2015, the Netherlands approved a partial ban on the full veil, meaning women cannot have their faces covered in schools, hospital and on public transport.
It doesn't completely outlaw the veil in public, but forbids it in "specific situations where it is essential for people to be seen" or for security reasons.
Italy
Italy does not have a national ban on the full-face veil, but in 2010, the town of Novara imposed restrictions – though there is currently no established fines system. In some parts of Italy, local authorities have banned ‘burkinis’ or full Islamic swimming costumes.
Spain
Several parts of Catalonia in Spain have laws against burkas and niqabs. In 2013, Spain’s Supreme Court overturned the ban in some parts, ruling that it “limits religious freedom”. But other areas have carried on - thanks to a 2014 ECHR (European Court of Human Rights) ruling that banning the veil does not breach human rights.
Chad
Women have been banned from wearing a full veil in Chad since two suicide bomb attacks in June 2015. The government banned it two days later. The prime minister Kalzeube Pahimi Deubet called it 'camouflage' and said all burqas seen on sale would be burnt. People could be arrested and sentenced to jail time for wearing them.
Cameroon
Cameroon followed suit a month after Chad by banning burkas following suicide bombings by people wearing veils. The ban is now active in five of the country’s provinces.
Niger
The veil is banned in Diffa, a region that has been hit by Boko Haram, and the president suggested the hijab – or headscarf – could also be banned.
Congo-Brazzaville
The veil has been banned here since 2015 in public places to “prevent any attack of terrorism.”
Turkey
Turkey has a predominantly Muslim population, but until 2013, there were rules banning women from wearing headscarves in the country’s state institutions. Women can now wear the veil everywhere bar in the judiciary, military and police.
Switzerland
The the latest country to pass a ban on the full-face veil, though it only stands in the region of Tessin. The law came into force on July 1, 2016 and anyone caught wearing a veil can be fined up to 9,200 euros.

Hours after Harvey Weinstein’s lawyer said the producer would not testify before a grand jury, the same panel has now indicted the disgraced Oscar winner on two sets of rape charges and a sex crime charge.
“A Grand Jury has voted to indict Harvey Weinstein on charges of Rape in the First and Third Degrees, and Criminal Sexual Act in the First Degree,” Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. said this afternoon. (Read the two-page indictment here, but be warned there are graphic descriptions of sex acts in it.)
If found guilty, the Oscar-winning producer could find himself behind bars for up to 25 years.
On Friday, Weinstein did the perp walk after surrendering himself to the NYPD. He was arrested and charged with two counts of rape (one involving force) as well as a criminal sexual act in the first degree, for alleged assaults against two women that occurred in 2013 and 2004 — the same charges the indictment just slapped down.
While the D.A. has been pecked at for moving too slow on the material the NYPD handed over against the much accused Weinstein, the grand jury has quietly been sitting for several weeks and issuing subpoenas. That process has now been unleashed.
“This indictment brings the defendant another step closer to accountability for the crimes of violence with which he is now charged,” Vance said of the latest legal move against the producer. “Our office will try this case not in the press, but in the courtroom where it belongs. The defendant’s recent assault on the integrity of the survivors and the legal process is predictable. We are confident that when the jury hears the evidence, it will reject these attacks out of hand.”
The remark about not trying the matter in the media is clearly directed at Weinstein lawyer Benjamin Brafman, who has been in front of the press the past few days floating trial balloons so to speak of the producer being denied vital case information and concerns that his client could get a fair trial amid media scrutiny. The New York-based attorney has also taken to trying to undermine the case by stating that one of the women cited in the charges and the ones today was someone Weinstein had a “consensual sexual relationship” with for five years before and several years after the alleged 2013 rape. Add to that, nudges and winks of “unfair political pressure being placed on Cy Vance to secure a conviction of Mr. Weinstein,” and you have a defense strategy in the offering.
“The announcement of Mr. Weinstein’s Indictment, does not come as a surprise,” Brafman said after this afternoon’s announcement. “Indeed, it was predicted by me this morning in an earlier statement we issued,” he also made a point of noting. “We also note of course that the Indictment merely mirrors the same charges in the criminal court Complaint and does not add anything to the case we did not already know. We asked the District Attorney for more time so that Mr Weinstein’s attorneys could gather the material needed to properly prepare him for his grand jury testimony but that request was denied.”
“We remind everyone that an Indictment is merely a formal accusation,” Brafman asserted Wednesday for his client. “Mr Weinstein intends to enter a plea of Not Guilty and vigorously defend against these unsupported allegations that he strongly denies. We will soon formally move to dismiss the indictment and if this case actually proceeds to trial, we expect Mr Weinstein to be acquitted.”
As well as being investigated by federal prosecutors, the Manhattan D.A. and the NYPD, Weinstein is being probed by the LAPD, which sent three cases to the L.A. County D.A. on February 8. As UK police continue their investigation, the Beverly Hills Police passed two cases of sexual assault to Jackie Lacey’s office on January 2.
There are also nearly a dozen lawsuits filed in the courts against Weinstein from some of the 80 women who have gone public with allegations of sexual assault and more by the once powerful producer.
After being booked in a NYPD precinct, Weinstein was arraigned on felony sex crime charges in New York Criminal Court. A judge set a prearranged bail of $1 million, a $10 million bond, took Weinstein’s passport to halt concerns of flight risk, and clamped a monitor on the producer to ensure his movements were restricted to the Empire State and Connecticut.

MAURITANIA: Mandatory Death Penalty For Islamic Blasphemy Law Passed As Country Hosts African Human Rights Body. ANY PERCEIVED OFFENSE Can Get You KILLED There. Conversation, Thought, Creative Arts Instantly Killed.

(Tunis) - Mauritanian authorities should reverse the recent adoption of a law on apostasy related crimes making the death penalty mandatory for “blasphemous speech” and “sacrilegious acts,” 21 national and international nongovernmental organizations said today. The authorities should also end the arbitrary detention and guarantee the safety of a blogger, Mohamed Cheikh Ould Mkhaïtir, whose case appears to be related to the timing of the law. Mkhaïtir was convicted of apostasy and sentenced to death in December 2014 before a court reduced his punishment to two years imprisonment. Although his sentence has expired, the authorities continue to detain him.
The blogger was sentenced to death convicted of 'apostasy' which means he's legally getting murdered by the Islamic government FOR LEAVING ISLAM RELIGION/DEATH CULT. Think for a moment what other religions or cults kill you if you ever decide you want to leave? Think, think, think? Satanism, and other cults. You DON'T get killed if you leave Christianity, or Judaism, or Hinduism, or Buddhism, or Sikhism, or Atheism.
The Islamic blasphemy law means you literally don't know who will be offended by anything you say, write, do, or wear. When I say perceived, people can make shit up if they don't like you and accuse you of blasphemy like Islamist do to Christians in all Islamic nations because they hate non-Muslims. Right now, Asia Bibi, a Christian wife and mother is on death row in Pakistan because a Muslim woman became angry that she was drinking the same water as the Muslims while harvesting berries together (working together in the same field). The evil Muslim woman and other Muslims falsely accused the Christian woman of INSULTING THE DEAD PROPHET MOHAMMED. Non-Muslims are treated as second class citizens where Islam rules the government. This is the religion of peace.
The state of non-Muslim minorities under Islamic rule is called Dhimmitude. CLICK HERE to read up on it. (emphasis mine)
The National Assembly passed a law on April 27, 2018 that replaces article 306 of the Criminal Code and makes death penalty mandatory for anyone convicted of “blasphemous speech” and acts deemed “sacrilegious.” The new law eliminates the possibility under article 306 of substituting prison terms for the death penalty for certain apostasy-related crimes if the offender promptly repents. The law also extends the scope of application of the death penalty to “renegade acts.”
The law also provides for a sentence of up to two years in prison and a fine of up to 600,000 Ouguiyas (approximately EUR 13,804) for “offending public indecency and Islamic values” and for “breaching Allah’s prohibitions” or assisting in their breach.
The National Assembly passed this law as the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) held its 62nd Ordinary Session in Nouakchott, the capital. The ACHPR has repeatedly said that countries should abolish the death penalty or establish a moratorium in line with the continental and global trend. In particular, the ACHPR emphasized: “In those States which have not yet abolished the death penalty it is vital that it is used for only the most serious crimes – understood to be crimes involving intentional killing. (…) Those sentenced to death have the right to seek clemency, pardon or commutation through a transparent process with due process of law.”
In addition, the United Nations has repeatedly stated that the mandatory imposition of the death penalty, even for the most serious crimes, is prohibited under international human rights law.
Mauritania has not carried out any execution since 1987. It has ratified numerous international human rights treaties including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Convention against Torture and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ rights that protect the right to life. The adoption of the law making the death penalty mandatory for certain apostasy related crimes is a huge step backward from the abolition of the death penalty.
The timing of the law appears to be related to the Mkhaïtir case. In 2014, a Nouadhibou court sentenced Mkhaïtir to death for apostasy under article 306 for posting an article online denouncing the use of religion to legitimize discriminatory practices against the blacksmith caste in Mauritania with which he identifies.
However, on November 9, 2017, the Court of Appeals of Nouadhibou commuted Mkhaïtir’s death penalty to a two-year prison term and a fine, after recognizing his repentance. A week later, the Council of Ministers approved the draft law to repeal and replace article 306.
Since Mkhaïtir had already served almost three years in detention by the time that the Court of Appeals reduced his sentence, he should have been released. However, he remains in incommunicado detention. On May 2, 2018 the Mauritanian authorities informed the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) that Mkhaïtir was in “administrative detention for his own safety”.
Throughout the legal proceedings against Mkhaïtir, thousands of protesters took to the streets in several towns, including Nouadhibou and Nouakchott, demanding that Mkhaïtir be sentenced to death and executed. He continued to receive death threats when he was in prison. His relatives, friends and supporters also received death threats.
In addition to Mkhaïtir, other Mauritanians who speak out against slavery and discrimination in Mauritania risk reprisals, including arbitrary arrests, torture and other ill-treatments, bans on their activities or their organizations.
For those of you who don't know, slavery, yes, slavery still exists and is LEGAL IN ISLAM. Anyone who tells you that's not true is truly lying to you.

These images I've chosen are from the movie titled, The Secret of Kells (2009). It's a French-Belgian-Irish animated fantasy film. I was led to these images after I came across the nature images above. The white cat is the link. I created this storyboard for us to convey my message. This is the first time I've heard of this movie. I love the imagery and the story sounds so intriguing. I'm definitely watching tonight. I'll let you know what I think. :)
"In the remote Irish woods, Cellach prepares a fortress for an impending attack by a Viking war party. Unbeknown to Cellach, his young nephew Brendan -- who has no taste for battle -- works secretly as an apprentice in the scriptorium of the local monastery, learning the ancient art of calligraphy. As the Vikings approach, revered illuminator Aidan arrives at the monastery and recruits Brendan to complete a series of dangerous, magical tasks."
UPDATE 5/30/18 at 10:03pm pst: I just finished watching the animated movie, The Secret of Kells (2009). I loved it. ❤ 5 out of 5 stars. A must see.

Dear Friends,
The Full Moon is Tuesday May 29 at 8:19 AM Mountain Daylight Time
It is a good time for reflection, commitment, maturity, honesty and a true honoring of self. Coming on the heels of an introspective, creative and inspired time, this full moon invites us to make a commitment to a new alignment of our values and the intentions that have come out of that alignment. Pace yourself with whatever energy you have and match your enthusiasm with the rhythm of what is showing up in your life. If it is slow and nourishing, then be slow and go with the flow. If it is greatly energized and accelerated, then step up to meet it. Align yourself to what is showing up and think of life as being effortless instead of a struggle.
These times have brought crises, sudden change, tragedy, shock, challenge and many opportunities for doing things differently, some still yet to be revealed. While holding a compassionate container for the difficulties you and others may be going through, it is also important to keep your eye on the bigger picture and to keep the energy moving forward. Whatever you can do to continue clearing the past and realigning the future is most helpful right now. And remember to trust your intuition. It is the best reality check you have.
Blessings,
Lena

Sagittarius Full Moon
Sun in Gemini ~ Moon in Sagittarius 8º
Tuesday, May 29, 8:19 AM Mountain Daylight Time
(Tuesday, May 29, 2:19 PM Greenwich Mean Time)
Let the Sagittarius Full Moon help shift you into a positive frame of mind. We can use a boost after the mid-May New Moon intensity. When the outer, transpersonal planets change signs, we feel it! Thank goodness it doesn’t happen that often as energetically we have to realign to the new frequency of their expression, i.e. Aries to Taurus; fire to earth sign in the case of Uranus’ recent movement.
Gemini-Sagittarius can help us with shifting the circuitry of the mind. Airy Gemini holds the lighter pole of information gathering, networking and moving from place to place. Fiery Sagittarius on the other hand seeks peace of mind by finding meaning, purpose and understanding of life (called ‘higher mind’ in astro speak). When Sagittarius begins the dive into a deeper relationship with Spirit through listening (meditation/prayer) and communicating their TRUTH (beyond the social enthusiasm they are so good at), they find the far horizons and adventure they seek. Here’s where their strong intuition is such an asset, and when they learn to trust it, it frees the overactive mind from creating a bog of anxious worry.
Jupiter is the ruler of Full Moon here and is retrograde in Scorpio pointing us to inner frontiers for the growth and expansion Jupiter facilitates wherever it goes. In Scorpio, we become ever sharper and more aware of our psychological inner workings and hidden power struggles that seem to be rising from the depths like lava from a volcano. Jupiter is our ally in transformation at deep emotional levels now. Your closet of beliefs and ancient fears are in process of clean out. Tune in to and probe deeply the patterns and triggers that surface now with Jupiter at 15º ~ the most powerful degree for a power sign. By November, Jupiter moves on to Sagittarius on its way to meeting Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn in 2020, so now is the perfect time for healing work.
The emotionally focused water signs, Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces are aligning to ease the way and give support for the penetrating emotional work available to us. Venus in Cancer, Neptune in Pisces and chart ruler Jupiter in Scorpio form a Grand Trine, so it’s practically a BOGO situation where our intuition leads us to open the doors to connection with our true essence and to intimacy with the other ~ truly a generous gift from benevolent Jupiter. Our dreams can be activated, tarot cards may invite insights, devotional practices can tune you to the essence of the Trine, also visiting your water places and sending gratitude through the waterways. These actions can help activate the healing properties of the Grand Trine for you.
Not only a Grand Water Trine, but also a Mystic Rectangle is formed by the North/South nodes and the Sun and the Moon all between 7-8º in the masculine air/fire elements. The sacred geometry of the Mystic Rectangle is another benevolent gift. It represents taking your awareness and understanding and making them practical in your life with ‘an incredible capacity for sustained productivity’.
Not to say there aren’t stressful aspects that need finesse and skillful handling, but like many of the recent Moon charts this year, they are almost two-layered with plenty of tension and adjustment, even crisis displayed, but also a layer of ease and helpful support for lifting, embracing and strengthening our evolving consciousness. Which layer are you choosing? The astrological influences are supporting us for the massive growth work that has manifested over the recent decades. We are more powerful and awake than we have ever been.
Saturn. Pluto and Jupiter are retrograde now. Just when we’re getting our legs under our selves and our projects, the inner planes are calling our numbers for new lessons, unravelings, and owning the situations we create for our learning. In June, we can expect two more planets in retrograde, first Neptune then Mars. So allow yourself the luxury of a slower pacing, revisiting decisions and priorities, and watch who and what resurfaces from the past.
Mars entered Aquarius at last new Moon and has an extended journey in that sign. Every two years Mars has a retrograde period and this is the year, so instead of 3 weeks in a sign it will be SIX months. Six months of our actions moving with newfound mental clarity and objectivity, inviting in shift and change, working with the power of the ideal future, experimenting, inventing. So, make some radical plans for the pursuit of your freedom and for the reformation of what restricts you most. Mars will be there awaiting your command and to align masculine thrust on your behalf.
USA: ABC Cancelled 'The Rosanne Show' After Outrage Poured In To Them By The Faux Leftist Who Only Feign Outrage About People They Don't Like And Who Support President Trump.
— Roseanne Barr (@therealroseanne) May 29, 2018I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste.

Stellar ratings and an apology weren't enough to mitigate Roseanne Barr's racist comments, and now ABC is pulling the plug on "Roseanne." ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey confirmed the network has decided to cancel the "Roseanne" reboot following Barr's tweet comparing former Obama White House aide Valerie Jarrett to an ape.
Dungey said in a statement, "Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show." In 2016, Dungey made headlines when she became the first African-American to run the entertainment division of a major broadcast television network.
Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC, shared Dungey's statement on Twitter and added the comment, "There was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing."
From Channing Dungey, President of ABC Entertainment: "Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show."There was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing.
— Robert Iger (@RobertIger) May 29, 2018
Although Barr had earlier tweeted that she was leaving Twitter, she returned Tuesday night. She retweeted some support she had received -- as well wrote she thought Jarrett was "Saudi" -- and then she issued a statement.
@ValerieJarrett I want to apologize to you. I am very sorry to have hurt you. I hope you can accept this sincere apology!— Roseanne Barr (@therealroseanne) May 30, 2018
ICM Partners, the talent agency that represents Barr, also dropped her as a client. The company sent an email to all of its employees saying, "We are all greatly distressed by the disgraceful and unacceptable tweet from Roseanne Barr this morning. What she wrote is antithetical to our core values, both as individuals and as an agency. Consequently, we have notified her that we will not represent her. Reruns of the show also took an immediate hit, with Viacom announcing that it would drop the series from all its channels.

On February 7th, video taken at George Lopez’s stand-up show at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix found its way to TMZ and then all over the internet. In it, the comedian is heard cracking a racially-charged joke about Latino families: “There’s still two rules in the f*cking Latino family,” he says. “Don’t marry somebody black, and don’t park in front of our house.”
When a woman in the audience stood up and gave him the finger, Lopez aggressively berated her for over a minute in an expletive-laden rant. “Sit your f*cking ass down. I’m talking, bitch. Sit your f*cking ass down,” Lopez yelled. “You paid to see a show. Sit your ass down. You can’t take a joke, you’re in the wrong motherf*cking place.”
The incident kicked off a social media scandal. There was the ever-vocal “take a joke!” contingent, that accused those offended of being over-sensitive. There were those urging us to take Lopez’s comment seriously as social critique or to use the opportunity to advance a serious critique. And then there were the many for whom the joke and the ensuing interaction were just plain racist. Headlines critiquing Lopez’s anti-blackness abounded.
Which brings us to the question: What does a racist joke look like in 2017? And when it comes to social satire, where is the line between critiquing racial or ethnic stereotypes and reinforcing them?
Interesting, Wanda Sykes who makes a living insulting anyone and everyone for years, even tells her paying audience off as you can see in this video clip, is highly offended by one tweet about one person that's not even her. (emphasis mine)

When Netflix announced that it would release a TV series based on the 2014 film Dear White People, a lot of white people freaked out, accusing the show and Netflix of being racist. All the freaking out didn’t really affect the popularity of the show, which managed to snag a 100 percent “certified fresh” ranking among critics on popular TV- and film-review site Rotten Tomatoes.
But next to that 100 percent rating is also an audience ranking, of what regular people who watched the series thought, and it’s a middling 57 percent. Now, is a lot of that just a bunch of white tears still crying over a show they think is targeting them? Sure. But—and I’m about to go with an unpopular opinion here—what if Dear White People isn’t the “stay woke” comedy of this era that we’ve all been waiting for? What if Dear White People is actually asleep—as in a dreamy, deep, comalike sleep—as a show for white people disguised as a “faux woke” comedy for black people?
Sure, Dear White People, the Netflix show, is funnier and deeper than the film, and it has some outstanding episodes (especially 4-6), but the faux wokeness is strong.
The 10-episode series has no problem poking fun and satirizing the failings, hypocrisies and conflicts among black activist college students at a PWI, or predominantly white institution, but it is afraid to take that same sledgehammer to “white allies” who are constantly hovering in that space, too. The result is a show that is barely worth an afternoon binge, when it could have been a classic Netflix and chill.
What is “faux woke” comedy? It’s comedy that is steeped in the politics of black life and pain but isn’t really for black people. Faux-woke comedy goes through great pains to use the black experience to appeal to white allies and not offend their sense of important “wokeness.” There’s money in faux wokeness now, so long as you can sell it to white audiences. (Think of the early work of W. Kamau Bell.)
These types serve up “black” consciousness with a creamy foam on top but make sure, if the topics get too thorny (sex, relationships, institutional violence), that they’re there with a hanky for all the allied white tears. By the finale, Dear White People devolves into a hat-tipping, cane-swirling, “Racism, AMIRITE????” instead of giving black viewers (the source of the comedy) real laughter and catharsis.
Any show’s “message” is shown through contrasting character voices; whoever gets the last word is what the show is really trying to say. Aaron McGruder’s critique of commercialized black culture came by way of Huey calling out Grandpa and Riley on their “nigga moments” in The Boondocks. Michaela Coel calls out racial fetishizing on Chewing Gum by contrasting Conner and Tracey with Ash and his bougie-but-assimilated ex-wife in “Replacements” (season 2, episode 2). Even though Earn is the main character in Atlanta, Donald Glover uses Paper Boi’s realness and Van’s work ethic to expose him for the smug, self-righteous underachiever he really is. In Dear White People, white folks almost always get the last word, either from their mouths or from black folks caping for them.
The students at Winchester aren’t just characters; they’re ciphers for certain black ideologies. Reggie is black male militancy, Coco is self-loathing but self-aware assimilation, Troy is respectability politics. The strengths and weaknesses of their beliefs are pointed out throughout the show, but what about Sam and, to an equal extent, Gabe, the key relationship that runs throughout the show?
Unlike Reggie’s, Coco’s or Troy’s behaviors, which are all poked fun at and are contrasted, Sam and Gabe run free, unchecked and unchallenged. Sam’s contention that black activism is burdensome is never challenged by Joelle or Reggie or anybody else on the show. If anything, it’s validated by Gabe constantly reminding her that she can opt out of her blackness by being with him. Gabe is never called out by the main characters for anything he does, no matter how egregious. His feelings are deemed just as important as the actual real-life experiences of black folks on the show. By. Other. Black. People.

This is racism — served with a smile.
“Black-ish,” the hit freshman ABC comedy series that features appealing characters in dumb situations, most of them African-Americans, I believe promotes ugly racial bigotry.
But don’t ask me. Ask Donald Trump.
“How is ABC Television allowed to have a show entitled ‘Black-ish’? ” the real-estate developer and reality-TV babe, a white guy, tweeted in October. “Can you imagine the furor of a show, ‘White-ish’! Racism at highest level?’’
If you won’t listen to Trump, who focused on the show’s jaw-dropping title, then read a petition posted on Change.org urging ABC to cancel “Black-ish.’’
“We find it racist, socially damaging and offensive based on the concept that nonstereotypical black people are less their race than others, that hip hop culture is all blacks are supposed to embrace, and that culture and race are one and the same,’’ the petition reads.
Or, ask my kid.
When she attended a private school in Brooklyn, my daughter’s best friend was a black girl. I don’t think that my child, who is white, even noticed the superficial racial differences between her and her pal. That is, until the day that her fourth-grade teacher, a white man, lectured the inseparable girls, in earshot of their parents, telling them that they must never forget that their skins are of different hues.
How is ABC Television allowed to have a show entitled "Blackish"? Can you imagine the furor of a show, "Whiteish"! Racism at highest level?— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 1, 2014
I think that he meant well. But as I watched, an expression of utter bewilderment overtook my daughter’s face as her innocence was stripped away.
Or, ask a barista.
Many Starbucks drink-slingers last month annoyed the coffee-selling chain’s customers nationwide by writing the words “Race Together’’ on cups, using a condescending, corporate-generated slogan in an effort to spark unnecessary and unhelpful conversations about race relations.
“Black-ish’’ brings about the same kind of racial lunacy, making people of all skin colors appear biased, clueless and, most of all, racist. The show presents tortured portrayals of African-Americans with money, pushing the false notion that affluent blacks become middle-class members of the bourgeoisie — folks derided as “bougie’’ (pronounced bhoo-shee) in the show’s parlance.
In the world of “Black-ish,” well-to-do black people are not black at all. They’re “black-ish.’’ All this is played for yuks.
I believe that the majority of Americans have moved beyond being punch lines in sick ethnic jokes. But I don’t make TV shows.
In “Black-ish,’’ Anthony Anderson, one of the show’s co-executive producers, plays Andre “Dre’’ Johnson Sr., a black version of the white, race-obsessed Archie Bunker character from the 1970s TV sitcom “All in the Family.’’ A successful advertising executive, Dre is married to a doctor, Rainbow, or “Bow’’ (Tracee Ellis Ross), whose mother is black and father white, which Dre apparently sees as a shortcoming. In several cringe-worthy scenes, he rubs his wife’s mixed-race parentage in her face.
Laurence Fishburne, also a show co-executive producer, plays Dre’s curmudgeonly father, Earl “Pops’’ Johnson.
Dre and Bow are raising four kids in a grand house in an upper-middle-class Los Angeles neighborhood dominated by white people. And while Dre, who grew up in more humble surroundings, tries desperately to remind the children of their racial identity, his younger kids either don’t seem to realize, or think it’s no big deal, that Barack Obama is the first biracial president of the United States.
In the first episode, Dre’s 12-year-old son, Andre Jr. (Marcus Scribner), asks his father for a bar mitzvah on his 13th birthday, like those of his rich-kid friends, although he isn’t Jewish. He also wants to be called the less-black-sounding “Andy’’ and, rather than play basketball, he wants to go out for field hockey, which his dad savages as a sport for white girls. In another episode, Dre’s 15-year-old daughter, Zoey (Yara Shahidi), gets dumped by her white, French boyfriend, coincidentally named Andre. But she’s delighted to learn that Andre dumped her not because of racial differences, but because he found her “shallow.’’
Hilarity ensues as Dre, reluctantly, accepts his kids’ choices.
This season, Fox debuted the hit TV drama series “Empire’’ about a clan of African-Americans whose members got rich from the family’s music company. Patriarch Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) is a former drug dealer who worries that his three sons are spoiled rotten. But he’s not plagued by the kind of existential turmoil that grips Dre.
ABC brass have yet to announce if “Black-ish’’ will see a second season. But a TV insider assured me that the show will be back. (“Empire’’ has already been renewed.)
We’re almost certain to see more racist drivel masquerading as social commentary.

The Root’s Monique Judge lent her voice to the chorus of those calling on ABC to cancel “Roseanne” and then applauding the network when they did so. Over the course of several hours today, Judge retweeted these takes on the controversy:

I get that actors need checks. I do. But those interviews were full of uncomfortable people who didn't believe in Roseanne but were trying to act like it was going to be okay.— M’BlockU (@rodimusprime) May 29, 2018

Judge was also among the many who called out “Roseanne” costar Sara Gilbert for her statement on the show’s cancellation:

I'm emphasizing NFL'S right to fire the NFL players who kneel to disrespect, give middle finger, to America (National Anthem) during the game. But since you say it's okay off the field too, sure why not.
Americans (paying customers) were already pissed off and insulted by the NFL players giving them the middle finger before President Trump said anything. That's why he spoke up to make a point, @NFL League biting the hand that feeds them.— Global Awareness 101 (@Mononoke__Hime) May 31, 2018
